No one knows what Arthur’s funny-looking costume represents, but even his school principal calls it a winner! ‘Arthur’s frustrations and hassles ring true, and kids will enjoy the constantly changing costumes. Hoban’s expressive chimp faces catch the nuances of feeling, and the soft colors catch the action wonderfully well.’ —SLJ.

Some kids might like Arthur, but my son just couldn't get into him. I admit, I didn't even like this one. Perhaps a younger, more innocent child, maybe a girl really, would like Arthur more. We never made it past the first chapter. I would recommend this for the average first grader. Perhaps a read-to for the Pre-K and K crowd, but I can't see how it would hold anyone's attention really.

I have very fond memories of reading this book when I was a little girl so I was excited to find it at the library for my own daughter. She was a little confused at the name since Arthur is also the name of a character that Marc Brown writes about.

Arthur wanted to be a ghost but he spilled ketchup on his costume so Violet said to Arthurt you could be a vampire. He turned out to be a scary and cutoff a head of a doll.

Wilma's sister points out that Arthur's costume represents the spirit of Halloween. The costume merits the "most original" designation.
