To summarize this novel, a great white shark descends upon Amity Island, forcing Chief Brody to close all the beaches. [Kidding] The protagonist is hunting a great fish and there are sharks in this story, but that is where the similarities between “Jaws” and Hemingway’s Pulitzer-prizing winning novel end. The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an old fisherman, Santiago, who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. Santiago’s erstwhile apprentice, a young boy named Malino, remains his ...more

I really loved this book. I always knew that Ernest Hemmingway was a very famous author, but I always expected his books to be dense, boring and complicated. I was wrong, this book was about an old man who was having a very bad fishing season. It has been months since he had caught a fish. This was until one day when he caught this gigantic swordfish. It took him half way out into the middle of the ocean. He never let that fish go, not even when his hands were cut and his back hurt. The ...more

Read it in high school (1994)...hated it.
Read/taught it first year I taught (2003)...hated it and so did they.
Read it in UNH grad class on Novella (2007)...hated it but was intrigued by our three-hour discussion and follow-up emails...
so I read/taught it at end of first semester in conjunction with "The Old Man Who Read Love Stories" and...they hated it and so did I.

Maybe I should trust my instincts more? The only other Hemingway I've read is "The Short Happy Life of Francis...more

I usually enjoy short and sweet stories in around the 150 page mark, but this one? Hemmingway disappointed me before with For Whom the Bell Tolls... basically the problem was too much description (and BAD description of that)and too little plot in comparison. In this story, an old man goes out to catch a fish... does the fish stand for anything other than food ?... No! do we get any insight as to why the boy really cares about him ?... No! did Hemingway decide to delve into the old man's dramati...more

The world was hard to step into, at first...Because it's been a long time since I spent sensual time with nature, or went fishing...& the way that the old man & the boy spoke was so straightforward, it really did feel rigid & overtly dramatic...But boy did I get into it.

The richness of Hemmingway's imagery...Could sew up holes in my jeans with its precision.

I finished this book on the one-year anniversary of my grandfather's death...& later found out that it was his all-time...more

The Old Man in the Sea was Hemingways most popular work and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Why? I'm not really sure. On the jacket it reads- it has the simplicity of a fable. The significance of a parable, and the drama of an epic. This is one movie I would not want to see, wait maybe I did see it, I think it was called "Cast Away".
If this book was written today would it win the Pulitzer Prize? I don't think so. This book was really painful to read. Take it with yo...more

Not my favorite Hemingway, but it's beautifully written and there are many symbols worthy of thought and discussion. Plus, it's very short. If you like Hemingway, read it. If you don't, or haven't ever read him, start with something else, like "The Sun Also Rises."

Addendum: After reading a passage one more time, I've decided this is actually more valuable than I previously thought. It's great for teaching about epic and heroism, but is BORING for young readers. That's all. I LOVE H...more

I first read this title in freshman year of high school and remembered not being completely impressed by Hemingway. Fast forward several years later and I love it. The story is so simple and sad, it is hard not too. Hemingway was brillant and it makes all the sense in the world that we worship his style and books.

If you, like me, remember this book as being a drag, I suggest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises as a portal to the wonderful literary genius that is Hemingway.

I believe this book was very interesting, and also thought it could of been better. I felt really bad for the old man because all the sharks ate his fish that he worked extremely hard for. I also felt bad for him because he didn’t catch a lot of big fish and when he came in he had nothing to eat. I thought this book was a adventures book and thought it was short and easy. I definitely recommend this book just because it was fun but sad.

I was at penn station in new jersey, about to bus back hom to corpus christi, tx. I can tell you that the bus ride from newark, nj, to corpus christi, tx, is not a fucking short one. So I was looking around a high price train station book store, and for some reason this little book popped out to me. I finished it half way home, and read it once more, not out of boredom, because I had 3 other books, but because I liked it. Good Job Ernest.

This is my first time with one of Hemingway's novels and it was rather enjoyable. There was tons of Jesus imagery and several instances of parallels being drawn between the marlin and men. The old man often refers to the marlin as his brother which creates an interesting bond between the two. This was a really fantastic book with tons of underlying images and themes. Read this, its great.

The first time I tried to read this book must have been somewhere between third and fifth grade. Needless to say, I didn't get it, and it was almost ruined for me until another go during high school.

It's a beautifully written book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not sure I agree with all the things my English teacher said it signified, but it left room in my mind for much contemplation.

The book was good. It was short -- how much can be written about the perils of an old man fishing. Then again, isn't there a reality show or something on crabbing? They seem to have it easy compared to this poor guy.

Okay, not exactly the best critical thinking I've done. give me a break, I called in sick to work and have been reading and watching movies all day.

Once again, forced to read in high school and could not believe how long Hemingway went on about this old man being out in the sea. Really descriptive and lengthy and I was so disappointed to make myself sit through it all and end up with such a depressing ending. I should maybe give it another try now-not being forced to read I think makes a lot of difference!

I was disappointed with the book that earned Ernest Hemingway a Nobel Prize. I probably just didn't understand all of the symbolism. I kept searching for it, suposedly it had symbolism of Christ. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if I had read about the symbolism beforehand and could think about that while I was reading.

This is a beautiful and simple story about an old man facing challenges and overcoming them. I love the easiness of the language and the flow of the story. His positive self talk is also something I learned from. Even if you're fighting off sharks and other predators, you can still overcome in the end.

Truly inspirational. I read it in one sitting, I couldn't tear myself away. It is rendered in a way that makes the story seem as epic as the arc of an entire life, even though the story follows a simple fisherman on a single trip out to sea.

This had to be one of the most boring books I've ever read. I mean, seriously, the guy just talks to his hand for freakin' forever. And then all of that pain and turmoil, and he doesn't even have the marlin at the end of the book? Come on!
