I really enjoyed this. I liked the setting (England and France) and the magical quality of the story. I liked the old character, Joe and in my mind saw one of our library patrons playing his part. It made me want to read more of Harris's books. I like the way she conveys that there is more going on in our lives than meets the eye.

Although I have had the majority of Joanne Harris's previous novels on my bookshelves for a number of years, so far I have only read Chocolat, Coastliners and Gentleman and Players. Now having just finished Blackberry Wine I intend to rectify this and catch up by reading the rest as soon as possible. So far she has proved to be for me a riveting storyteller, somehow making the locations and characters leap from the page. Her descriptions of food and wine so good that you feel you can smell and t...more

I think I would have liked this book much better if I had sat down to read it all in one sitting, rather than a chapter here, a chapter there, before finally settling down and reading it in large chunks. Unfortunately, that was not possible with life right now. That being said, I still loved the book. I fell in love with Harris's depiction of Joe and his down-to-earth whimsy. Her writing is enchanting and sucks you in, making you not want to leave the world she's creating and its characters. I l...more

Joanne Harris is my sister's favorite author, so before I gave her this book on her b-day I decided to read it. Heard allot about Harris and I watched the movie "Chocolate". First thing that I noticed when I started reading this book is the language used by author and how it made everything real: food, "ghost", wine, French food - that was great. The story was confusing at the beginning, mostly because there was mystery planted through out the story. As the book got furthe...more

The inspiration of this tale is Joe who Jay remembers in flashback with the book jumping from the Seventies to the Nineties. Joe is a "cunning man" who completely enchants Jay but as Jay grows up he becomes sceptical and disillusioned with the old man. Jay has a bit of a mid-life crisis and flees to France and gradually realises Joe's power wasn't what he knew about magic, but how he looked at life.

I nearly didn't finish this book either. The main character wasn't very appealing to me but his gardener friend was interesting so I continued to find out more about him. The setting in Lansquenet sur Tannes, the same small town from Harris' "Chocolat", seemed superfluous as Harris had fully developed an alternate setting in England for the beginning of this novel. Once the action moved to France it became more complicated and lost its vibrancy. I may not continue with the next Har...more

This was a totally unexpected tale, as a person who reads Joanne Harris novels regularly. For a start it was about a male and I was unsure just exactly how magical this would turn out to be. It's a haunting, strange tale about the relationship between an old man and a young boy, in the rather unusual setting of a small Northern town in England. A relationship that continues beyond death. It was enchanting, sad and yet again another masterpiece by Harris.

Easy reading, predictable but sweetly satisfying ending, a 'feel-good' novel that's a completely undemanding read. I've passed it on to my mother as she is going to absolutely love it. Don't read it if you're looking for something meaty and challenging, but do pick it up if you just want some fairly mindless light relief.

After enjoying Chocolat so much, I couldn't wait to read another book by this author, but I remember being very disappointed in this book. Not quite in the same league as Chocolat or even Five Quarters of an Orange.

A fun, quick read, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had a trip to Europe or wine country to look forward to. I did enjoy reading about a struggling author...but I wish the present story had unfolded a little faster & the characters/storylines developed a little more. I'd give it a C.

The beginning is interesting from a literary point of view, but impossible to sustain throughout the whole book and the devise is dropped. The rest of the story is excellent.
She uses the themes of returning, memory, heritage, connection to place, imperfection, etc. brilliantly.

Really beautiful and different, very reflective type of book with lots of flashbacks to childhood which are bittersweet, ending with a romance very cleverly written and put together. Has a real magical kind of quality to it :-) read it a few times and could read it again...

Joanne Harris keeps you guessing about what is going on here until quite near to the end of the story and as usual, there's always a twist. I like the way that France always figures highly in her stories, even though this one starts out in industrial Yorkshire.

Blackberry Wine is my favorite of all Joanne Harris's books. You literally feel like you are in a small town in France and can smell the wine and taste the food. She is a beautiful writer. I think I've read this book about 10 times over.

this book made me crave wine, especially dark reds with earthy flavors. I liked how she went back and forth between the past and the present, and I enjoyed both stories. joe was a well-developed character that I found very believable.

This book is a very close second favorite of mine from this author. The story is full of imagery and, like all of her stories, set in the beautiful french country-side. If wine could talk, it would have the voice of Joanne Harris!

I loved this book. Joanne Harris has become one of my favorite fiction authors. My main love of this book is that it talks about seed saving. I also liked the perspective of the one telling the story -- a bottle of wine!

Liked this one, but didn't love it. Took a long time to get into it and it didn't pack the emotional punch of some of her other novels. It actually reminded me very much of Chocolat, but not nearly as likeable.

I was skeptical but it turned out pretty good. Starts slow and ends slightly predictably, but it has a really wonderful middle. If you liked her novel Chocolat, you'll like this one.

Could not get into it. After 100 pages I gave it up. Usually I can tell if a book is good if I give it 50 pages. Given that I liked Chocolat, this was a real disappointment.
