I re-read this book just yesterday (in Feb 2008). I wanted to be sure my low 3-star rating was accurate, and besides I remembered it being a somewhat fun book to read.
It really would be interesting to see this as a play, as it has an element of surprise and suspense. This time around I enjoyed the economic play of it as Bjorn is in financial ruin, but has a way of playing the world economics for the game that they are. I did this play in high school then directed it in college. It as the benefit of having a large cast for a drama. The story is quirky. The staging unique (it's a courtroom drama where 13 people from the audience are chosen to be the jury and make the decision about the defendant's innocence or guilt at the end. - 2 different endings are written into the script).
Our advisor complained that it falls short as a courtroom drama because it didn't prove "beyond a reasonable doubt", but h...more

Ayn Rand was just crazy about getting raped. Serious. She loved it so much I'm surprised she didn't marry it.
Oh yeah, this is her play with two seperate endings based on whether or not a jury made up of audience members found the actor guilty not of rape, (cause that's okay in her book) but of murder. Ooooh!

At the time I read it I absolutely loved it, but I was a bit more of a Rand fan at the time. With a little perspective, I think maybe it was just suspenseful. Overall, I'd say it's entertaining if you can handle the lecture-ish undertones.

This would actually be a really fun play to attend. It's worth a read. It's not very long, and on a given day, I could go either way on the verdict, although having read plenty of Rand I realize what an indictment on my character that is.

This was the senior play the year I was a senior in high school. I played the judge in this play! And, to add a touch of realism to the story, we arranged to perform the play in an actual courtroom in the county courthouse!

We did this play when I was in high school - I played the part of the defense attorney. It was fun to do because the jury was made up of audience members and we had to do whichever ending their verdict called for.

Takes place entirely in a court room and is centered on a murder trial &deals with issues of man's ability to regard oneself as important and exist in a society where moral decay is ever prevalent.

Love it! While I've not had the opportunity to see the play as of yet, I have greatly enjoyed reading the story and wondering how the trial would turn out during a show.

The approach was novel with the audience as the jury, but I find Ayn Rand as difficult to read. Her main focus is on morality not character, which lessens my interest.

This is a well-told story, but I really like Rand's writing.

Ayn Rand's only play; played the judge in CAST's production (that opened new theatre).
