The Belgian author Caroline Lamarche has written beautiful portraits of several people, catalyzed by a dog that runs along the highway after probably having been deserted. This book won several prizes and I believe should be far better known than it is. The idea and how it is worked out is fresh and very much in line with the nostalgia and disconnectedness we collectively feel as a society, and how Lamarche paints some of the most memorable characters is touching and beautiful. Of the 6 people who saw the dog, I would say 2 are written in a slightly cliched way, but the writing itself and the other 4 more than make up for it.
