Mother of Pearl: Luminous Lessons and Iridescent Faith
Like oysters, women often encounter unexpected grit during their everyday lives. In response, God's love and grace covers this grit and transforms the pain into a precious pearl that leaves a layered, luminous lining within a shell: Mother of Pearl. This brilliant luster is strong, lasting, and purposeful--just like the love, lessons, and legacies left by the special women...more

I have been a fan of The Pearl Girls for several years and was very excited to read these stories from some of my favorite authors including Tricia Goyer, and Robin Jones Gunn. I also met some authors that I was not familiar with, but have enjoyed their heartwarming stories about motherhood. Many of these stories pulled on my heartstrings and I was able to relate to them as a mom. But even if you are not a mother, you may relate to these stories about family relationships and mother figures.

Mothers come in many different shapes and forms, but they touch almost all of our lives in one way or another. This book is a tribute to mothers of every kind. In a series of short essays, a number of different authors share a short story of love and inspiration about an important woman from their life. From birth to death, motherhood to grandmotherhood, all aspects of life are covered by the various stories. Some stories are funny, and some are touching. They all share a common thread of remind...more
This book – wow, what can I say about it. It was absolutely fabulously written and put together. The stories ranged across the gamut and they both made me smile and brought tears to my eyes. Some of the short pieces were more story-telling style while others were more factual but they were all inspiring and some were even challenging. Not in a challenging hard kind of a way, but in a way where they challenged you to take a specific action. It made me long to be a mom like these mothers and to mi...more
Mother of Pearl is a book for women, written by a group of ladies from various backgrounds and experiences. It is a compilation of short essays about some of the authors’ most personal experiences as women. Some of my favorite authors like Lis Wiehl, Robin Jones Gunn, Tricia Goyer and Suzanne Woods Fisher have made very touching contributions.

Mother of Pearl is a collection of essays written by some of today's best-known (and some relatively unknown) Christian women writers. With "luminous lessons and iridescent faith" this book is for all women, young and old. The stories in this collection are as varied as life itself. And like the miracle of a pearl in an oyster, the women in this anthology persevere through their struggles in amazing and beautiful ways.

The little pearl oyster receiving accidentally into its shell a rough fragment of rock or sand tries in vain to expel the intruding and irritant substance and only suffers in the struggle until rasped and bleeding it gives up in agony and helplessness.
Then a new force comes into play. From its peculiar physiological system the little mollusk sends forth a crystal fluid which covers and coats the rough piece of rock with a soft crystalline cushion and as this grows and hardens it becomes a beauti...more

This book is amazing – I never thought I’d be a mom but the day that my first daughter was placed in my arms, it was just – WOW! I didn’t become a mom that day though, I became a mom the moment in January 2001 and then grieved my lost child in February 2001 – my arms never felt so empty as they did at that moment. There are so many emotions as a mom, at times it’s exhausting and those that aren’t moms simply can’t understand the gamut of emotions that go low and go high – as if you’re on a rolle...more
Most of the stories are about mothers and daughters, or grandmothers and granddaughters, or mother-figures in the lives of women. The deep connection that grows between women can be full of value, it can be a pearl of great price.
One of the tender articles that really touched me was one written very honestly about her relationship with her mother that had never been what she’d hoped. (I won’t give the good stuff away!!) What I loved about that particular piece was how it moved my heart to be tha...more

Mother of Pearl is a wonderfully moving compilation of essays by women who write from and of the heart. Each story was written to be savored like a glass of fine wine. As you read the heart-felt stories of these women, who are themselves, mothers, grandmothers, and daughters, they will fill your heart to overflowing. Each story reflects the personality of its author giving the book a wonderful flavor as though the production of the book was a walk through God’s orchid and the stories plucked fr...more
A pearl is formed when an irritant is caught inside the oysters shell, and in order to protect itself, the oyster makes a pearl sac. We also can have irritants in our lives, but if we let Him, God can create a “pearl” in us. Mother of Pearl, compiled by Margaret McSweeney, is a collection of essays written on the topic of motherhood.
