This Mercer Mayer book is a story from “There’s Something There” collection of bedtime classics. This story is about a young girl who hears a “nightmare” in her attic. Like usual, her parents don’t believe her so she goes up with a lasso to capture it. She finds a giant monster holding her teddy bear. As planned, she lassos the monster and brings him downstairs to show her parents. When her parents finally wake up, the monster is gone. This is an example of the invisible monsters that only kids...more

This book could be used across all elementary grade levels. This is a good book to have a read-aloud experience about how to overcome fears or nightmares. It could be used to help children stretch their imaginations to write their own short stories. The book can also be used to introduce the concept of overcoming their own fears and abstract-thinking.

THis is one of my favorites. I love the suspense and the story line. I like the fact that the "monster" is carrying her teddy bear and seems to be harmless. She trys to convince her parents that this "monster" is real, but he gets away at the last second and hides back in the attic. I hope she eventually gets her teddy bear back!
What a great book for students are experiencing nightmares!
Great book to teach the feeling of fear and teach the students how to have courage. Wonderful book for young students experiencing this feeling. Also- makes the students learn that "nightmares" can be nice and they just want to snuggle with your bear :)

This is a great book to read to children because they can connect to it. Some of them may have nightmares and not sleep well at night because they are scared something might get them. This book reassures children that everything is ok when you are asleep at night and that nightmares can be forgotten.
This book is great! The pictures are so in depth and the little girl is so cute. She believes there is a monster in her attic. She calls it a nightmare. This nightmare happens to be real and steals her teddy bear. This is a nice story.

I love the strong female character who isn't afraid to go after a monster. With her lasso, she sets out to catch him. This story is great to talk about confidence, character traits, illustrations, and bravery.
A cute story about a little girl who is tired of her toys disappearing, so she faces her fears in order to get them back from the monster in the attic. This is a good book to read for fun.

This was a good book. I didn't care a ton for the illustrations but they were good. I did however really like the monster. The story was cute and fun for my daughter so that is always a plus.
Convinced there is something making noise in the attic at night, a brave little girl sneaks up the stairs, lasso in hand, to capture whatever it is.
Similar to the alligator and nightmare books, the child has a fear and they (in this case) she does something about it. The illustrations of the girl were slightly different from other Meyer drawings, but the monster in the attic was classic Meyer. And her stealing toys? I found that rather funny. But I think the best part was the girl's cowgirl skills.
While I think this would work in storytime, I decided to do the alligator book for my "Feelings" theme.

When a little girl can't sleep at night due to something she hears in the attic, she decides to do a little exploring. This little girl isn't afraid of anything. She comes face to face with her nightmare, and realizes that this monster has gotten away with her new teddy bear. I absolutely love the illustrations in this book!
My kids love Mercer Mayer's "nightmare" books. I think I like this one the best. Maybe because it has a girl instead of a boy?

I began illustrating books in 1966. Since that time I have published over 300 books. Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid. Now I'm a big kid and I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always remind me of what it was like.
