Living in Rudow and commuting to work through Gropiusstadt, it struck me that I should know the memoir that the neighbourhoods are famous for.
The book, put together from interviews with Christiane F., a teenaged heroin addict, her mother, and authorities working to fight drug use in West Berlin in the 1970s, follows Christiane from her early childhood, when she was abused by her father, who was an alcoholic, to her teenage years, when, desperately hoping for acceptance and love, sh...more

This is one of the books of the 20th century for me. I think it is available in English too so read it! Especially if you are a parent of young teens.
Every city has its seedy side and West Berlin more than most - it was always a little weird because of its odd isolated status as a kind of democratic & capitalist advertisement so close to its Communist neighbour. There had also been a long tradition of experimentation and excess in the city even before the war that was accentuated by ...more

This is a horror story- not in the cinimatic slasher/monster sense, but in the sense that it is jarring to think that these things REALLY happened to a REAL person. It is a slow-motion documentary of one girl's transformation from a bright and promising child to the walking cadavar of a heroin addict. No anti-drug message in any commercial, movie, or book has ever come close to affecting me to the extent that this novel has. German is my second language, and my vocabulary is rusty, but don't be ...more

I was deeply impressed with this book when I read it as a teenager. Made me think a lot about drug use and their dangers. It was much more effective than any speech I had in high school about drugs. It's not a romantic view of that kind of life like we can see in other books/movies.
Every teenager should read it.

14 year old prostitute hooked on heroin. Another one of those educational books recommended by my mother early on. Once again, I will never forget it. Scary, real, gruesome imagery. Based on a true story.

Well... "Don't do drugs" is pretty obvious. And besides from that there's definetly a LOT more to learn from this book.
All i can say is; read it and learn about the life you closed your eyes not to see.

This book gave me nightmares when I read it. It came out when I was studying in Germany, so I brought it home to keep up the language. It's a gruesome story of a 14 year old heroin addict.

Story of a girl, who was a drug addict and a prostitute. This book is compliation of interviews with Christine F. done by journalists of German newspaper Stern. The action is set years 1975-77. The train station Zoo was a place of meeting of teenage drug addicts and where they were catching clients - prostitution was a source of money for a drug dose. The book also contains relations of Christine's mother and an owner of youth club Haus der Mitte. Christine's relation also shows what a person ps...more

One of the best books I ever read about addiction.
This book and the movie that was made out of it where absolutely shocking and unforgettable!
I read it when I was a teenager ,living during the 80's in a Europe which was getting more and more pulled down into the black spiral of "killer heroin".
I'd love to read it again:I wonder if I would feel the same or if I'd find it a bit sureficial, like it often happens when you read a book or watch a movie that were special when you were young.

There was a movie made from her story and now she's a big fish in a small pond type of celebrity with a disco song (it's a bit long but pretty good). This book wasn't all bad (I loved hearing about berlin's completely unhospitable subsidized housing). could have been great if christiane herself had an ounce of depth. There's got to be a more interesting posterchild for Berlin's heroin addicts.
the movie is totally passable.

Super-fast read. (For the record, I read the English version, which isn't in the database here...) Very absorbing story, made even more so by the fact that Christiane F. is still alive and well. Haven't yet seen the movie, but I hear it's a pretty faithful facsimile.

The first time I read it, I only managed to get halfway through. I just so hated the snotty style of writing in which the heroine told her story.
I've decided to give it another try, though, so that's why it is still on my to read shelf.

This book is an amazing look at heroine addiction. Set in 1970s Berlin, it is a difficult read in terms of subject matter and graphics, but a definite must. Read it!

When I read it at age 16, it made me want to become a heroin addicted child prostitute, but looking back it probably kept me from ever getting into drugs - of any kind.

This is a very stark portrait/story of a young girl who becomes a drug addict and prostitute in Berlin
