retard ranch!!

this is the best romance novel i have ever read. which really only means it is better than this.(now that i have learned how to do that, i am going to link to every part of the internet, given time...) and sarah palin will probably hate this review. but the fact of the matter is, i love the word "retard". i think it is a funny-sounding word, along with "renal", "swizzle" and "filbert". but i don't want any angry facebook letters (because i am not even on facebook, so it will do you

A magia do Amor!

3.5 or possibly 4 happy stars for this heartwarming and sometimes amusing romance. I chuckled several times. Smith also wrote A Place to Call Home, which has been compared to The Sweet Gum Tree. I liked that book, too.

This story is set in North-Central Florida, at Ben Thocco's ranch. The setting is contemporary, with references to Al Gore, Sarah Palin, etc.

Themes: Adoption. Trust. Animals. Environment. Appreciation for the heart and soul of the cognitively challenged, along with issues of ineq

Beautiful and very well written! You can feel the characters and the story is beautiful :)

After the death of her parents, Kara Whittenbrook was shocked to discover that she and been adopted. This information in hand, she started out to Florida because she had to know more about them, even though she had been told they were mentally handicapped, and she needed to know why she had been given up for adoption. The Thocco Ranch was home to several ranch hands with mental handicaps such as Down Syndrome or Autism, but somehow Ben Thocco saw that each of his employees has their own special ...more

Well, if there isn't a Thocco ranch in Florida, there ought to be. A Gentle Rain captured me immediately from Kara's birth to her discovery that her birth parents were not your average mother and father. When Ben Thocco looks down and sees his baby brother for the first time and forms a protective bond, I defy anyone with a heart to set this book down. Written with charm and wit and just darn good storytelling, Ms. Smith had me choked up one minute and laughing the next. From Kara's ability to s ...more

Started last afternoon and couldn't stop till get to the end.
Really fantastic book.
So gentle, so sweet.

There are words that has left me with blurry eyes, a warm heart and a grin on my face all at once.

Loved it! The characters stayed with me even after I finished the book. It was one of those books that I just couldn't put down.

Another contemporary which is usually out of my comfort but this was worth it. Such a moving and sweet read. The characters are very flushed out and you feel like you know them. Being original from Florida, I feel like she was describing people and places I've known or been to. I picked up the book and couldn't put it down. I had to see how they were going to get to the end though most of the ends were obvious.

So I would have given this a 5 star but thinking on it, it was just a little too predi

I found this book through a very dubious connection, I needed a book with "G" for the title in a challenge and "G" was proving to be a very hard letter to find, so I randomly started to type words that began with "G" that would fit and found this book. Then when I started to read this book I didn't expect to really like it, just plow through it to reach my goal, so imagine my surprise when 50 pages in I really liked it and it just got better and better as the book went.

I had to read this book for my readers’ advisory class and I must say I enjoyed it a lot more than I initially thought I would. I think I was biased off the bat into liking Kara when I read she had a master’s in library science and world cultures (since I’m an Anthropology major and am getting a degree in library science). Be that as it may, I did like Kara’s selflessness and passion to protect those she loved. In terms of the writing, I really liked Smith’s use of language and imagery in the wa ...more

Nicely written. Very romantic; very predictable.
Depicts a part of Florida rarely heard of.

Speaking of Deborah Smith... After I read When Venus Fell again I decided to check out what's new with Smith. This is one I haven't read that looked interesting to me. In the introduction she talks about how much she loved Cross Creek as a child and adores Florida. I am completely in love with the movie starring Mary Steenburgen. However, the main character is Cross Creek itself. So, here I go on another Deborah Smith adventure.

I abandoned this one. Blech. Sorry, Deborah. The more I rea

I skimmed the last quarter, hoping it might get better. It didn't. The heroine is annoying, and the big conflict (that the hero might not be able to accept a woman with money) was completely out of the blue. The book was insulting to adoptive families, patronizing to mentally challenged people, and, worst of all, boring. I liked the first few chapters, but after that, it just kept getting worse and worse.

Oh well. Back to the Romance-hunting drawing board.

Unlike what happened with the last book I read by the author, A Gentle Rain didn’t engage me right from the start, which left me discouraged. I don’t know if I liked the story, I think I liked more the idea of the story, and not the way it was built. I expected so much more, considering all this range of fantastic and captivating characters, combined with beautiful scenery, this story could have been what The Crossroads Cafe was for me, an inspiration. Unfortunately, I didn’t like this one as mu ...more

Deborah Smith is one of my favorite authors of all time!
Kara is an heiress who finds out she is adopted and ends up tracking down her parents at a Florida "cracker horse" ranch.
The story was a little stretchy, but I totally love Deborah Smith and would jump off a bridge if she told me too.

This is an incredibly well written and heartfelt novel. I am sad to finish its pages, but I am appeased by the knowledge it is here for me to read, time and time again. It is safe to say that this book will forever be on my list of Favorites, very near the top.

4.5 stars. Although a bit unbelievable at times, this was a truly beautiful love story. Not just a love story of a man and a woman, but of family and friends. You can't help but cheer for all of the characters, even the animals! Highly recommend!

This is first book by Deborah Smith I have read. A Gentle Rain is a great read about discovering one's self, facing fears and finding strength deep down and surrendering to love. I laughed, sometimes deep belly laughs picturing the moment I was reading, sometimes tears. Another thing I enjoyed about this book it did not use offensive language. The romantic scenes she let you use your imagination, how refreshing. The characters living at

Wonderful characters, vivid scenes, and a good story. I would have given it 5 stars, but I felt the special needs folks in the story were a little too ideally portrayed.

Adorei a escrita e a história!
