This delightful and insightful historic fiction tells of thirteen year old Anna Green and the trials she and her family faced during the Civil War when Vicksburg was under siege. The book is written from Anna’s viewpoint and gives insight into how a young girl might have perceived what was happening during this time of conflict.

Anna and her mother, brother and young sister are trying to survive during the war in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Her older brother and father are off fighting, and rumor has it that they may be very close to home. Things have been so bad for so long that the family has had their slave dig into the hill by their home and construct a shelter, to which they flee when the fighting gets bad. When Anna's mother is killed, things become even more dire for the children. At first, they stay with their pasto...more
What a great introduction for middle grade readers to Civil War history--this fast-moving story brings it to life! One quickly forgets whether the book's characters are from the north or south and identifies with Anna and her family. Wise beyond her years, Anna matures quickly and guides her siblings surely around oppressive caretakers, tricksters and thieves, returning as quickly as possible to her home and a normal existence for her family, under one of the most trying sieges of the war. There’s plenty for everyone to like in Margo L. Dill’s FINDING MY PLACE, with her authentic and plucky thirteen-year-old protagonist, Anna Green, and her riveting story about the 1863 Siege of Vicksburg. In Anna’s Civil War tale, we’re grabbed from the first page and taken on a journey beyond the battlefields where Rebels and Blue Bellies fight. Anna brings readers to the emotional heart of life during the War Between the States.

Finding My Place, One Girl’s Strength at Vicksburg, by Margo L. Dill, is a tough book. Not because it’s not well-written or is hard to read. It’s tough because it’s a realistic story about a very difficult time in our nation’s history. This is a fictionalized story about General Grant’s six week siege of Vicksburg, as seen through the eyes of thirteen year old, Anna Green. It’s a down-to-earth Civil War story made compelling and personal by the main character.

Wonderfully written story by Margo Dill about the trials and tribulations through the eyes of a 13 yr. old girl during the Civil War. The heroine, Anna Green, jumps out of the pages as a role model for young girls displaying passion, courage and her determination to keep her family together during very difficult times.

Throught the eyes of thirteen-year-old Anna Green, we are shown an inside picture of life during the war on Vicksburg in the summer of 1863. It's a story of strength, courage and determination as Anna struggles to hold her remaining family and pieces of their lives together. The story made me feel as if I was there with Anna at that time.
Although this is for middle school readers, I found myself waiting to learn how Anna's story turned out. This spunky girl girl faces the Civil War in Vicksburg with pluck despite hardships. Dill provides the story with realistic details that inform the reader along with writing an entertaining story. A great book for any reader!
The author creates a vivid depiction of life in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I really enjoyed the historical details and felt inspired to read more Civil War fiction. While it has been many years for me, I imagine middle grade students will relate to 13-year-old Anna and be intrigued by the difficult circumstances of her life. I think this book is a great tool for sparking discussions with students about war, sacrifice, and values-based decision making. Looking forward to sharing Finding My Place wit...more
