An engaging and fast-paced debut, with a memorable and realistic protagonist. I was quickly sucked into the story and felt a real connection with the main character, Paige. Her dad is dead, her mom is never around, and she keeps getting cryptic messages from beyond. Things get more complicated (and much steamier) when she meets Nathan, mysterious, mature, and undeniably hot.

This book was okay. I didn't hate it, but didn't really like it that much either.

The paranormal world that Rebekkah investigates here is intriguing, but I just couldn't get past the fact that Paige was extremely naive, cried all the time, got herself into REALLY stupid situations, and just whined and complained about everything. Beyond the Eyes was a surprise! It's not exactly what I usually read but I was pleased at how good it was. It started out with a bang the first page really pulls you in. The author does a wonderful job of making sure you understand everything, the back story for the characters was a little complicated for me but I ended up catching on quickly.

I loved this 24 chapter book. It had everything: drama, action, mystery, romance, and suspense. The story was told through Paige’s first person point-of-view. I appreciated that Rebekkah Ford made an effort to get readers caring about all the characters.

She had an amazing talent with characterization and plot. All the people in the story–heroes, villains, main, supporting–were three-dimensional. She had an amazing talent with characterization and plot. All the people in the story–heroes, villains, main, supporting–were three-dimensional. Even though Paige was the main one, it didn’t feel like just her story. Everyone got a chance to show their personalities–like an ensemble cast. Jack (a.k.a. Tree) was my favorite. The entire novel was interesting–no boring parts at all. The action flowed well, and the mystery, suspense had me sitting on the edge of my seat. It kept me motivated to continue reading to the end.

The author was also brilliant with the emotional aspect of the story. I fell in love with all the drama. In fact, towards the ending, every time Paige’s mother was mentioned, I shed a tear. This story really tugged at my heartstrings. I thought it was cute how Carrie had a crush on Matt, then just like that, I felt bad for Tree because he had feelings for her. It broke my heart that Paige’s mother avoided her company (said it hurt too much). The way Rebekkah Ford described things had me lost in the story. I felt what they felt. I understood their struggles, heartache, butterflies of falling in love, and living life the best they could.

The characters were definitely relatable, and that’s why it was easy for me to root for them to have a happy ending.

I can’t discuss Beyond the Eyes without talking about the sweet romance. I loved the beautiful imagery. If you’re a hopeless romantic, then you’ll fall in love with most of the scenes in the book. There was a love triangle between Carrie, Tree, and Matt (all best friends with Paige). Nathan and Paige fell in love at first sight. So cute! Then later, Brayden (love the name) came in the picture to form another love triangle. Nathan and Brayden were both intense with their feelings for Paige, so you can imagine all the conflict and tension involved. The saddest of all, Paige’s parents love for one another. Her mom had been heartbroken since her dad passed away.

I also enjoyed the friendship relationships. Even though they were only teens, they had been through so much pain that they bonded as a family. I respected their group and appreciated how they had each other’s back no matter what. Being a loner, I don’t know what that feels like, so it felt good to get a glimpse of it.

My favorite scenes were: the funeral/wake scene, Nathan and Paige’s first date, when Paige plays Celtic music for her mom and Nathan, and the classroom scene where her teacher finally shows a softer side.

The story was great with providing subtle clues about something that just wasn’t ordinary. For example, I knew right away that something was up with Mr. Kitty. If Paige’s ears rang, watch out! The cliffhanger ended perfectly, and I can’t wait to read the next set of books. Paige summed it up perfectly: “Bring it on!”

I just wanted to add that the author’s family grew up believing in the supernatural world, which I think is awesome. That’s a cool thing to find inspiration from.

I love that her story is unique. The paranormal world that she created is a first, for me at least. I love that it isn't vampires and werewolves. It's different and hasn't been repeated over and over again.

Paige is a 17 year old girl who has cryptic premonitions that he is having a hard time understanding. She lost her father at the young age of four. Her mother is a traveling nurse, and isn't around much. She keeps herself busy with school and hanging out with her friends: Carrie, Tree, and Matt. She meets swoon-worthy Nathan very early in the book, and I find him very interesting and I ached to get to know him better ;-)

Thankfully, we get to know him quite well! One of the highlights of this YA Paranormal Romance is the romantic relationship with Paige and Nathan. They do progress at a bit of a faster rate than in other novels, but I don't feel that it was too fast. He is old and knows what he wants (I'm not going to say how old because I'm not into spoilers - just know that he's old enough!), and she had to grow up at a young age due to her mom's job keeping her away from home; she also has been in a serious relationship in the past that lasted a few years. Paige knows how a relationship works and I would even venture to say that she was able to make an educated decision in regards to Nathan.

While I missed the butterflies of experiencing the growth of their relationship, it didn't take anything away from the story for me at all. With that in mind, I love that she wrote their relationship in a realistic way - and I got plenty of warm fuzzies from that! I'm so sick of YA novels pretending that these couples aren't having some kind of romantic "shenanigans!" Things are different now than they were when even I was a teenager. And it isn't written in a way that it is inappropriate for even a 14 or 15 year old to read - don't worry moms! They've seen worse on MTV than they'll read in this book. It was actually refreshing. If you want something to compare the "Hotness Factor," I would say it is more hot than Breaking Dawn, and much colder than Fifty Shades of Grey (like an ice cube compared to that series)...

Here is what confuses me about other reviews I have read about this book:

One reviewer said that she felt the main character, Paige, was too whiny and cried a lot. There were a few times that she did cry; we, as adults, have to remember that she is a hormonal 17 year old, who suffers a great loss (fair warning - you'll need a bit of tissue)! Her mother is very flighty. She is a travelling nurse who is never around (which we find out later is because it hurts her to be around her daughter because she reminds her too much of her dead husband - and she tells Paige this!), so Paige has been, basically, raising herself. And the last, most common issue among reviewers who rated less than 4 - Paige is selfish. Again, Paige is 17 years old. If she was selfless and wasn't hormonal, I would be giving the book a much lower rating - because it wouldn't be believable. Considering the circumstances surrounding Paige's life, I find nothing odd about her personality. I agree that she is all of these things, and even some more that I could add to the list, but I see nothing out of the ordinary with her behavior in comparison to any other teenage girl her age.

I, for one, am very excited to continue on Paige's journey. I can't wait to read the second book, Dark Spirits, to see her growth. Also, for those Grammar Nazi's: there were a few mistakes, but none that just screamed at you; more than mass market books, but much less than most self published books I've read (and there have been a lot).(less)

If that first sentence didn’t hook you in, I don’t know what would. Rebekkah’s first lines of the main character dying at the age of seventeen, yet she is still narrating the story is quite intriguing in itself. I really enjoyed this book and I absolutely need to read the second one that just came out this past week or two. Rebekkah’s writing is wonderful. I didn’t see many typos and if I had, I didn’t notice them because I was so engulfed with the story.

Paige Reed is a wonderful main character. There were times were I just wanted to smack her but then I thought about how I was at the age of seventeen and then I refrained from those thoughts, because I was the same way; in fact I think most of us were. Paige has had a crap-load of heartache and hardships within her short life. I related with her on many aspects. Then enters Nathan Caswell (what a kick ass name, right?) He is hot, sexy, older, drives a truck, protective, gentlemanly, caring, sweet, and so many other things. They fall in love at first sight. Which is cute but not that realistic, but the reader can get over that. At the beginning it was a little weird between them how it started so fast and they fall so fast, but I got over that.

From the beginning to about 40% into the book, I kept trying to figure out what the paranormal/supernatural beings were. At first I thought vampires, but then I thought werewolves. And then after that, I just couldn’t figure out what it was. Paige has premonitions and her ears ring and she didn’t know why until Nathan explained everything to her because the same thing happens to him, minus the premonitions, of course.

I loved all the characters and I think that’s how Rebekkah wanted it to be. Tree and Carrie are awesome. I even liked Matt a bit, but something just irritated me about him. But Rebekkah writes her characters so that her readers care about them, and I really like that. And we really see Paige grow emotionally, which I really liked. I hope to see her continue her growth.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed this book and I will be reading the second book as soon as I possibly can, so that I can continue on with this amazing story! You should all at least give it a chance if you like paranormal stories with a romantic twist and a few love triangles. :]

Anyways, for purposes of writing a fair and honest review, I do need to mention that I have a bias towards the book, since I did the cover art. Also, I don't normally read paranormal romance (I tend to lean towards the dystopian, sci-fi/fantasy books).

My favorite thing about this book was that it kept me wanting to read more. Even though I wasn't always a fan of the romance (did seem like the main romance got a bit lovey too fast), there were other times were the romance moments made me smile. I enjoyed the interactions between Paige and her friends best, and Tree was probably my favorite character (just because he seems to be an all-around protective nice guy). The story had the occasional moment that actually made me laugh out loud, in a good way (typically between Carrie and Paige or just in the odd thought that Paige had).

I also thoroughly enjoyed the characters of the bad guys, including the Old One when he has his confrontation with Paige in history class, as well as that of the more arrogant dark spirit (the one who meets Paige in the restroom at the Lions Den). They just had that awesome "evil" feel to them, and it worked well at the climax of the story when they attack Paige, and I was wondering who was going to end up doing the specific task (not saying for spoiler points), and what would happen if the bad guys got there first.

I did notice a few small grammer/punctuation typos, but nothing major and at times I felt like there could be more showing rather than telling us how Paige felt. At the same time, I came to enjoy the narrative voice and how it had a story-telling aspect.

A few other reviewers have pointed out that Paige seems to be upset/cry a lot, and in the beginning of the book, this does seem to be the case. It got better towards the end, though, and I overlooked it largely because I kept wanting to know, "What happens next?"

I'll admit, I did get a bit teary eyed when one of the characters dies in the later part of the book. Did seem a bit sudden, but the whole scene had a really surreal element to it that I think worked well.

It felt like an upper YA book, as it did have cursing and a few sexual elements, but it seemed to work well in context of the story
I read the book during breaks at work, and each time looked forward to continuing, and would spend some time afterwards wondering what was likely to happen next.

So, though "Beyond the Eyes" did have its ups and downs, I really enjoyed the book, and would recommend it to anyone who's looking for a romance (I did like the main love interest, so that's a plus), as well as enjoys a story that fleshes out a neat "magic" system (which was the other thing that pulled me through it-- wondering about how the dark spirits worked). Meanwhile, I look forward to reading the next book in the series.(less)

She happily continues to live her mundane and lonely life when Nathan unexpectedly enters...everything she knew changed as he shows her that the world is not as it seems. Firstly, there's immortality and secondly, there are evil spirits that take host bodies. Paige is thrust into the throng of the evilness around her when an old spirit residing in one of her friends bodies sets his sights on her. The "old one" seems to think that Paige is special and the key to finding King Solomon's ring, a ring that allows the holder to control all evil spirits.

Beyond the Eyes by Rebekkah Ford is an engrossing read with original content and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I'm going to first mention my two personal gripes against this book. Firstly I felt that the story was paced too slowly, I felt that the mystery and all the paranormal aspect wasn't being divulged fast enough. Too much of the chapters were dedicated to mundane and irrelevant aspects, however, being the first book in the series, maybe Ford had done this on purpose to really get the readers to get to know the characters.

My second point...we have another instant love in the YA genre! I don't quite understand why as Ford had substantial amount of chapters dedicated to Paige and Nathan getting to know each other so I don't understand why she did not pace their love story a bit better, but alas, those are my thoughts. Their love was so intense so quickly that I failed to understand the love between them. I was being "told" about their relationship but I wasn't "feeling" it.

However, despite those two gripes I had with the book I loved the story. It's originality and all it's contents were fantastic. I liked how the book was multi-dimensional, whilst it did revolve around Paige, there was Paige and Nathan's love story, then there was the mystery behind Paige's Father and also the mystery behind the evil spirits and their fascination towards Paige...so there was quite a few things going on in the book, it just never got boring. However, I picked this book up to read a paranormal story and that's why I felt that there was far too much chapters devoted to Paige and Nathan's love story. I must mention also that I would probably rate this as a New Adult genre more so than a YA as there is sexual content and connotation which may not be inappropriate for those under the age of 16, but that's my personal opinion.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and strangely enough I loved the secondary characters MORE than the main characters. I really enjoyed Tree and Carrie's character. Both these characters had such great personalities that they really translated through the pages. You can fully envision what type of people they were and you easily get immersed into their life and become vested in their story.

Despite my personal gripes with Beyond the Eyes I still highly recommend it, as the characters, plot, mystery and originality more than makes up for those indiscretions. I really enjoyed the story, the mystery was not easily solved and it was a fascinating and original read.(less)

I'm a big fan of the paranormal and YA books. The cover art of Beyond the Eyes caught my attention, and after I read the description, I just had to buy it.

I thought the character of Paige Reed was very refreshing. I like characters who experience growth. At the start of the book this character is a very vulnerable 17 year-old who really has no family in her life. She relies upon friends to fill this void, and I absolutely love that. At the start of the book this character is a very vulnerable 17 year-old who really has no family in her life. She relies upon friends to fill this void, and I absolutely love that. The friends were different and quirky, but also very supportive - which is a good combination to have.

Rebekkah Ford does a wonderful job of conveying daily life of teenagers. We follow Paige through a school day, on a date, chatting with friends, etc. It has been a long time since I’ve been in high school, but I felt like the naivety and purity of the young teenage experience is captured in such a beautiful way in this book, that it felt like I was in high school again (in a good way).

Without giving any spoilers away, the story follows a young girl during a huge loss in her life. It is at a time where an underlying truth is told to her and she has a huge decision to make. Throw on a first love, a love triangle, an enchanted object, premonitions, and attempts on her life, and you have one fabulous story that just begs for a part 2 and (hopefully) a part 3.

I was really excited about the love triangle aspect and I am hoping to see more of Brayden in the next book. I think Rebekkah Ford has really set up the sequel nicely for this character. The love interest, Nathan, is portrayed as the sweet, ever-caring, gorgeous boyfriend (and heck, who wouldn't fall instantly in love with him?) and I think Nathan and Brayden play well off of each other. I'm hoping the next book really expands upon the conflict of these three characters. Sorry, I can't share more due to spoilers.

Given how much turmoil is in her life, and at such a young age that Paige is experiencing it, I think the character was quite strong. She would tell herself not to cry during stressful times, but then would cry and fall apart (like any teenage girl with no family support) would afterwards. I found her weaknesses to be believable, and I loved the growth she had throughout the story. The Paige at the start of the book is not the same young woman we find at the end. My hope is that she continues to grow in the following books since I do plan on buying them.(less)

Shelves: ya-paranormal

Having once been a teenage girl myself, I found myself relating with Paige, the main character of this really interesting story. Not that I ever had premonitions or was hunted by dark spirits, mind you, but if I were, I think I would feel just like Paige did. Being a teenager is never easy, but being a teenager whose father died when she was very young and whose mother is seldom around (not to mention the mysterious and troubling premonitions) would take its toll on any teenager. Shelves: fantasy

The story itself had a great deal of potential. It has all of the right elements of action and adventure coupled with drama and suspense. The focus of the paranormal world is executed well and the descriptions were not overbearing.

Beyond the Eyes is a unique read. Rebekkah Ford seems to have combined a bunch of ideas and experiment with how they would all play out together. It caused really nice tension to build for the story and kept my interested. I also really liked the pace that the book took. It could have easily went faster, ending up with a very confusing and muddled up story that people would have to re-read in order to understand all that was happening, but Rebekkah kept it slow and clear. I really liked this book. It had so much romance, drama, action, ect..... It had a really good ending too. I didn't ever loose intrest in it and I can't wait until the next book comes out!

This book is absolutely thrilling,and beautifully written. I believe that it's Fords first, and what a debut. I'll be keeping an eye on this lady's writing career, and reading everything she writes in the future.
