Kästner’s cycle of poems Die 13 Monate (The 13 Months) should be read in one sitting, or, as I did, with a recording of actor Heinz Rühmann reading the poems. Kästner wrote a poem for every month plus a 13th that embraces parts of each. The beauty of the language plus Rühmann’s aged, welcoming voice—he was in his late 80s when he made these recordings—would surprise anyone who thinks of German as a guttural, staccato language with strange sounds.

Melancholie und Freude sind wohl Schwestern.

Erich Kästner (1899 – 1974) was a German author, poet, screenwriter and satirist, known for his humorous, socially astute poetry and children's literature.

A stout pacifist and democrat, he was expelled from the national writers' guild during the Nazi era, with many of his books being burned in public. Today, he is widely regarded as one of Germany's most prolific and beloved children's book author
