We're working away through the "1,001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up" list - at least, all of the ones available at our library, which is only about 50% so far. This is a simple story about a girl who spends summer vacation with her grandfather collecting little odds and ends and watching a storm. It's not a particularly poetic telling, and there isn't much of a plot, but my daughter liked it and asked me to read it twice. It's quiet, gentle - a reassuring read.

Stina goes to stay with her grandfather who lives near the ocean. Stina beachcombs and finds many small treasures. Then, one day, a big storm arrives. Stina’s grandfather cannot find Stina. He finally locates her out on the beach, hoping to experience the storm. She is not happy about it until her grandfather helps her dress more appropriately for the weather.
Lena Anderson is awesome, this is such a sweet book. A curious youngster spends the summer with her grandfather at his house by the sea, goes exploring, finds all kinds of interesting things, learns about facing a fear at the end. Does a great job illustrating a child's captivation with newness and the natural world. Fantastic pictures.
My kids liked this little picture book about Stina, who stays with her grandfather in his beach house one summer. She collects little treasures that wash up along the shore and one evening, without asking her grandfather, ventures outside during a storm. Just enough suspense for my 6-year-old. Sweet story.

The little illustrative details in the text add so much delight to the story. The illustrations take you straight to a summer delighting in the treasures of the seashore!
I just liked this one. It reminds me a little bit of all the collecting stuff outside that I did growing up. :)
I liked the Grandpa. I liked the illustrations and it was a neat storyline.
