Kudos to the author, who is evidently a serious musician, for choosing good music for his characters to play and for describing it accurately. (That's one of my litmus tests for historical novels!)

Maybe I was reading too quickly, but I have to confess that the mystery itself didn't really engage me. It seemed like a waste of time to stir up all the mystery around a "supernatural" crime and an Egyptian god (obviously ridiculous). I didn't believe that anyone apart from the credulous...more

Yup!!

I enjoyed this detective novel set in Freud's Vienna. Main characters are Detective Rheinhardt and psychologist Dr. Max Liebermann, both on the forward edge of innovations in their fields. The psychologist applies "talk therapy," hypnotism and dream analysis to unravel clues, working with the detective and his sidekick. Freud has a cameo and is presented with respectful humor. Most interesting is the setting of the book in turn-of-the-19th-century Vienna, including its growing anti-Sem...more

Not to be confused with A Death in Vienna by Dan Silva, which I have also read, and probably enjoyed to the same amount.

There were great things about this book. One, I could almost taste the coffee and Viennese pastries while the characters were hanging about in coffee shops. Made me absolutely long for a trip to Vienna in any time period. Unfortunately, that's where the greatness stopped and the mediocrity set in. The "detective" is a psychologist and an early devotee o...more

I really enjoyed this author's first book in a new mystery series. It is an intelligent romp, albeit slightly contrived, but fun. The detailed narrative, set in Vienna, cleverly pulls together events, celebrities including Freud (psychoanalysis) and Landsteiner (Nobel prize winner for work on blood typing), as well as the spiritualism and feminist movements of early 20th century, and particulars of the Hapsburg Empire. I found it to be a really lovely period piece contrasted with a murder mys...more

A Woman is murdered in the early 20th century of Vienna. There is no bullet found and the door of the room where the murder takes place is locked from the inside. Dr. Lieberman is called by his detective friend to help solve the case. I thought the setting was interesting. I liked the references to Sigmund Freud. The mystery did not grab my attention, however. I thought there were too many mini-plots that were really not pertinent to the story. I wondered if they were intentional to make...more

This is a very well done historical mystery set in 1902 Vienna with a really creative use of the classic "locked room" murder plot. The characters are well drawn and the author does an excellent job of keeping them true to the era without lapsing into caricature. Liebermann, for example is a psychologist who believes in Freud's "talking method" but who is hesitant to follow him completely due to some of Freud's ookier ideas.

There's also some nice political tidbits (ma...more

The way Frank Tallis combines the cultural history of Vienna and the details about early psychoanalysis makes for very interesting reading. I found this information more interesting than the mystery/plot of the book. The historical details inspired me to go in search of more information regarding early psychoanalysis and Dr. Sigmund Freud.

It took me longer than usual to read this book though. There are loads of characters to keep track of, almost to many.

Two mysteries! How my review got totally deleted and the only site I find to post my review is for an Indonesian edition!

I found the mystery OK. The author has obviously gone out of his way to learn and include every bit of minutia concerning Vienna of 100 years ago, but I do wish there had been a glossary to explain all the pastries and varieties of coffee!

The denouement at the famous Ferris Wheel is a nice tipe o' the hat to The Third Man.

A who-done-it where I had almost no desire to discover the 'who.' I loved the Austria-specific references although I found some of them lacking in depth. For instance, using the Reisenrad as the final climax scene seems a little forced. The author (a pscychologist himself) seemed to use as 'proof' outmoded Freudian techniques and analysis, interesting ideas but definitely not compelling.

My favorite of the two Frank tallis books I've read. Sets a completely believable scene in victorian Vienna. The Lieberman in question is a young psychology student with a penchant for music; crime is investigated within an alluring musical setting. If you like language, you will love this book- very european with lots of colorful literary descriptions.

Ternyata 'Liebermann Papers' ini serial toh? :P
Rada bingung settingnya.
Awalnya kirain masa kini, ternyata bukan.
Masih pakai kereta kuda, trem, dan Dr Freud masih hidup ^^!
Penggambaran kota Vienna/Wina sebagai kota seni & musik bagus.

Overall, pemecahan kasusnya sederhana aja.
Yang menarik buat gw, analisa2 berdasar ilmu psikologinya aja.

It is mentioned on the back cover that this book is about "Sherlock Holmes meeting Freud." At first I was afraid that it would be exaggerating but then when I read the book, I am glad that truly it is similar within the condition if Sherlock Holmes indeed has met Freud. I love how the story goes, all the puzzles and riddles. Nicely written :)

Nice new mystery series--police detective and psychologist friend/helper in turn of the century Vienna. Tallis occasionally spends too much time getting *all* the (many) characters into the round, but the Vienna setting (Freud, Klimt, growing anti-semitism) is great, and his pacing just right. Best new mystery I've read in a long time.

A murder in a locked room, with a seemingly invisible bullet. The police detective asks a psychoanalyst for help in the investigation. Unfortunately, there is too much focus on the psychoanalyst's efforts in interviewing witnesses (and declaring them innocent or guilty), than the actual investigation or evidence itself.

This who-dun-it takes place at the turn of the 20th century in Freud's Vienna. Max Liebermann, a Jewish psychoanalyst, is the protagonist. I found the description of Viennese life and mores interesting, particularly the wonderful food. I look forward to the next installment of Max and his friends.
