Essentially 6 sermons looking at Jesus through the lenses of 6 different Biblical books, followed by 6 short chapters looking at 6 Biblical doctrines in the light of this. The first six sermons are not however the usual fare delivered from a pulpit of a Sunday... the exegetical understanding and hermeneutical application is of the high standard that anyone reading Tom Wright's other books should expect, indeed there are many themes emerging here that he develops in later books, so in many ways i...more
The first half of the book Wright breaks down 6 different books of the New Testament (Hebrews, Colossians, Matthew, John, Mark, Revelation) explaining specifcally how that book portrays Jesus. The second half of the book he takes six key New Testament themes (Resurrection, rebirth, temptation, hell, heaven and new life) and reflects on these topics in relation to Christians/Christianity.

Though I think N.T. Wright offers great ideas and intelligence, this book wasn’t the typical Christian read for me. I found it to be a bit “scholarly” for lack of a better word. It definitely wasn’t a book I couldn’t put down as I found I had to motivate myself to pick it back up. There have been Christian authors that I’ve struggled to read before, and its not to say I ‘struggled’ with this book. But I did find myself reading the words without hearing them. In one ear out the other.

The first several chapters of these books are more like sermons- enough to read a chapter (or two) before bed- not too heavy, but more than enough to give you fresh insight into certain books of the Bible (Hebrews, Mark, Matthew, John, Revelation...), not only how they were written and were meant to be understood, but also their application to life today. Those chapters in themselves are worth the price of the book.
Great book on discipleship and it's obstacles. Every chapter is very readable with great insights into a topic that usually only gets explored on the surface. Well worth reading.
My only problem with the book is the chapter on hell. I like what he says about the idea of judgement, but I disagree that hell is only an idea and not a "place". I guess if I was an Anglican I'd be a lot more sympathetic, but I ain't.

N.T. Wright is a wonderful writer. He is an Anglican theologian and an expert on 1st century Palestine. This book is a collection of 12 sermons that he put into writing. He takes several books in the New Testament one by one and looks at the over all theme of each book and discusses what it tells us about being better disciples of Jesus. This is a book I plan on reading again and again.

It's difficult to go wrong with NT Wright. This is a very accessible book and an excellent introduction to a number of strands of his unique contribution to theology. Particularly interesting (to me, at least) were his chapters on Revelation, John, Colossians, and the topical chapters on Temptation, Hell and New Life-New World.
Another excellent book by N.T. Wright. While this one was not mind-blowing, it was consistently good which is better than many books on discipleship. As other's have noted, it's broken out between chapters on different books on the Bible and then some more general questions on what following God implies.

An unexpected gem! I stumbled across this by chance, and quickly have grown to love is. Following Jesus gives the best introduction to Tom Wright's works of anything I've read. He lays out some of his major teaching themes here, in a way that challenged me, encouraged me, and opened my eyes more to the power of Jesus in our world and my daily life. In the first 6 chapters he gives masterful overviews of 6 books--Hebrews, Colossians, Matthew, John, Mark, and Revelation--each chock full of choice ...more
Short book of sermons. A true academic - Wright's sermons aren't radically different from his other writing.
Not the most memorable sermons but very accessible thinking from a master theologian.

My wife and I read through this one as an evening devotional. Lot of good things said here....some not so good.

I'm impressed with N.T. Wright. This book is a collection of his sermons focused on Christian discipleship. For an Anglican bishop, his writing is very pleasantly accessible to modern Americans. His talks on for the Veritas seminars have been very good, as well. These sermons present an interesting mix of orthodox theology with an appreciation for postmodernism and social activism.

N.T. Wright is one of the scholars Elder Holland quotes. I don't know why it took me so long to read it. It is a wonderful book, but it takes time to think about and can't be plowed through like a novel. It explained many beliefs that I share, but explained them in different ways than is common in my church. I found it helpful to see a few things in a new light that added to my faith.
Series of 12 sermons by NTWright-the first 6 on 6 books of the Bible were excellent overviews of each book and helped me understand where the author was coming from and why his audience needed to hear it. I'm reading this in a group study and the others' input is very beneficial to sifting through the info in the book. jp
A pretty good book divided in two sections; the first looking at six books of the Bible and how they portray Jesus, the second part deals with six primary themes from the new testament as they relate to Christ, which I especially liked. A refreshing look at difficult topics like temptation, heaven and hell.
In this book, N.T. (Tom) Wright provides us with a devotional, yet Biblically substantial book that just about any layperson would appreciate . . . and grow in one's understanding of what it means to follow Jesus in today's world.
Wright brings up some awesome thoughts! He seems to be very aware of the connection between the scriptures and social justice, something I like. You can hear his words and thoughts flowing from Rob Bell, if you like him.

A great book from Tom Wright, based on sermons he'd given. Encouraged me to look at Jesus in new ways - and even made me like the book of Hebrews a bit more!
This is a book I take to read about once a year. I find it helps me to focus and I really enjoy the insights he gives to scripture you have read many times.
Quick, easy, and a wonderful description of the Kingdom, and on hell.
Wright is right!
