Quis, quid, ubi, quibus auxiliis, cur, comodo, quando?

Well, it turns out that the second Asterix book is actually really good and entertaining. It is a little difficult to compare them to Tintin though, especially since the first Tintin books appeared in the 1930s while it was not until the 1960s that the Asterix books began to appear. However, while it took a few albums for Herge to begin to set Tintin on the path that he was going to go, it appears that Asterix reached that position pretty quickly. However, and I will have to revisit this statem...more

A fun read, loved my introduction to Asterix, Obelix, Getafix, Cacofonix, Dogmatix "the only known canine ecologist", and Vitalstatistix. Also enjoyed learning new words like menhir - a giant boulder (Obelix is a menhir delivery man) and amphora, which is a great word for a bottle, and everything one might say about a bottle... i.e. Asterix: "What a lot of traffic!" Obelix: "There must often be amphora-necks on fine days!"

This is the second Asterix book after Asterix The Gaul. Getafix the druid breaks his golden sickle so Asterix and Obelix need to travel to get it from the only sickle maker Getafix considers worthy. That means a trip to faraway Lutetia. Trouble is that when they arrive the sickle maker can't be found and the only golden sickles they can buy are on the black market at over-inflated and unaffordable prices. This is all bad news because Getafix needs it urgently for the imminent annual druid confer...more

I've finished reading the second book in the series. Definitely it kept its promise. Moreover, along with the fantasy mystery crept in. Obelix shared the centre stage with Asterix. A few things that I didn't like include Obelix's attitude toward animals. Obelix had a voracious appetite, I agree, but he himself commented like a “beastly animal.” By the way, I am not an animal right activist or something...

Second comic book in the series so, I'm going in a wrong order.

Interesting facts that I found:

Cacofonix is the teacher of the village. Cacofonix hasn't given his usual tree spot - he is tied in a moonlit room during the feast which is visible through its doorway.

Even in ancient times Paris is overcrowded with traffic.

Metallurgix, the sickle-maker cousin to Obelix, is facially identical to Obelix.

Asterix & Obelix keep getting arrested by the same patrol.

The tour-guide recommends a night in...more

Dit kl...more

As the second comic in the Asterix series, it is a definite improvement from the original.

The plot overview, as given by Wikipedia:

"Disaster strikes in the Gaulish village when Getafix the druid breaks his golden sickle. Without one he cannot attend the annual conference of druids, or cut mistletoe for the magic potion which keeps the Roman armies at bay. Asterix and his friend Obelix set out for Lutetia (present-day Paris) to buy a new one from Obelix's cousin, the sicklesmith Metallurgix.

Asterix the Golden Sickle – A&O go to Lutetia (Paris) to buy Druid Getafix a new sickle (takes on protection rackets)

long trip to Lutetia actually i felt so bored on the way and they went their and found out one weird thin _____________________ not spoiling it the most thing that was funny that i didn't expect Obelix's cousin to be that short and thin

Only with a golden sickle can the Gaulish druid concoct the magic potion that keeps the might of Rome at bay... so when he needs a new one only Asterix and Obelix will do for the job. Fun, as always.

Reread (after 30y) in French, and still excellent, although I am sure I miss lots of the jokes in that language.

Some of the gags also work better for me now I know Paris a little. When our heroes get to Lutetia (Paris) for the first time, they marvel at its size: "it's so big!"

They're looking in wonder at l'Ile de la Cité. There's a little village on this island in the Seine - that's all there is to Goscinny's Paris of 55AD. Lovely.

Witty comic book full of anachronisms and hilarious caricatures. For my high intermediate French class.

I loved these books as kid and they are still just as great as I remember them.

No Idéfix! Asterix and the Golden Sickle is not as good as the other ones.
Jacques le fataliste et son maître
Storia “gialla” molto semplice. Dimostra tutti i suoi anni.

Adventurous, funny and enjoyable. And good illustrations!
