If you’ve never described an obituary as a “real page turner,” you must read this collection which tracks some of the year’s best obits from the New York Times. There are stories of the famous (like Steve Jobs) and the obscure (like the impoverished New Zealander who grew up to become a high-society hostess and heroine of the French Resistance—the socialite who did, indeed, kill a Nazi with her bare hands).

A book of obituaries? It may sound macabre, but "The Socialite Who Killed a Nazi..." is anything but. In fact, it is a celebration of lives well lived (and some not-so-well-lived). With subjects ranging from Nora Ephron to Muammar Ghaddafi, from Whitney Houston to Steve Jobs, economists, athletes, and art collectors, the resultant kaleidoscope of life stories makes for some of the best reading I've done in a long time. Excellent, fun.... Would love to read every yearly edition. This not only dealt with famous people, but with ordinary people who did extraordinary things.

This book included the big names; Adam Yauch, Steve Jobs, Whitney Houston, etc. And some you should have noticed; Ray Bradbury, Joe Frazier, Lou Goldstein, etc. And some you may not have known as well. Its interesting to read about what ...more

I bought this in the Denver airport, and read it on the way back to Virginia. It is a delight: a walk through 20th century history, with a learning experience on every page. I give it an 8 out of 10.

I would STILL be reading this book, they are all truly fascinating, if it didn't have the teeny-tiniest print of any book I've ever read. That's the only thing that makes it putdownable.

Excellent book for 'spot reading.' Sad that I don't find out about some of the people until they are dead!
