Are you looking for a book that is easy to read and quite predictable? Add a little romance and a tribute to the military and small towns, and I think you've got the major ideas of the book encapsulated. For the most part, this was a delightful book in spite of the sappy romance and the fact that the ending is fairly standard. It was well-written and quite readable.

When someone asks me who I respect, I always answer, "Military spouses." There are some things in this world that I know I cannot do, and saying goodbye to my husband as he heads off to war is one of them. I just can't. And Michelle Garren Flye's Where the Heart Lies only cements that sentiment.

And Michelle Garren Flye's Where the Heart Lies only cements that sentiment.

Alicia Galloway promised her Marine husband Troy that they could move back to his North Carolina hometown. It isn't a burden, really, because her parents are dead, and the couple have a daughter about to start kindergarten. Being near Troy's parents will help, especially considering Alicia is expecting their second child.

But Troy doesn't come home from Afghanistan, and with his death, Alicia first must deliver their son, Jason, by herself, and then keeps her promise to her husband.

Before Alicia has a chance to get settled, she meets Penny, a neighbor who briefly dated Troy in high school and has an eighteen-year-old daughter of her own. The second person Alicia meets is Liam, Troy's best friend from high school, who shows up with a bag of groceries and says that he's keeping his own promise to Troy; he will watch over Alicia and the kids.

Alicia is impressed, not to mention immediately attracted to him. But wait. Her husband just died. Why does she have the steamin' undies for another man? Penny tries to warn her, as do various townspeople. Liam is trouble, they say. He will break your heart. But Liam is interested in her, and she him.

Uh oh.

Alicia knows exactly what she wants, but she is paralyzed with fear when it comes to going after it. What will people say? What will her in-laws say? Can she and Liam even have a relationship? Can this work out? Whether it does or not really is due to no help from Alicia herself, because she causes more problems for her own darn self than any other character. Some family secrets emerge, some of which we see coming pages before Flye confirms our suspicions.

As for rocking the headboard, while it happens, it is not terribly detailed. For the most part, we get kissing and caressing, which is written well enough that we feel the attraction between Liam and Alicia.

The problem with this book is that there is no mystery here. We know how it will end, and, like I said, the big shocking bombshell is so obvious that you keep wondering why no one else seems to know about it. Alicia is sweet, and we want her to be happy. Liam seems fantastic, so all of the whisperings and warnings about how awful he is and how he will break her heart don't make a lot of sense.

This is one of those books that won't make a huge impression on you, but is pleasant to read. If nothing else, you'll want to follow Alicia to make sure she doesn't screw up anything beyond repair.

While I have no problem with romances involving widows, for me this entire book happened too soon after the loss of Alicia's husband Ty. As a character I enjoyed Alicia however I didn't want to be with her on her journey through her grief.

On the other hand I loved the hero Liam. He was fantastic, patient, supportive, understanding and caring. In fact he was the only character I really had any sympathy for. I rooted for his HEA and I'm glad he got it but sadly it wasn't enough to get me through...more

I’ve been reading a lot of stories about widows falling for their husband’s best friends, especially widows whose husbands were soldiers. I think it’s a new trend in Contemporary Romance. This one in particular looked like a sweet story and that’s why I read it.

Alicia’s husband, Ty, died in the war. Since his dream was to move back to his hometown and take care of his father’s bookstore, Alicia decided to do just that. So now she and her kids are in a new town, trying to settle down and adapt to life alone.

Liam was Ty’s childhood friend but they didn’t stay friends after he joined the military because on a faithful night there was an accident that thwarted the husband’s career in sports and forced him to join the military. An accident everyone in town still blames Liam for, even though it’s been years and Liam was a troubled teen that needed more help than scorn. Now Liam is a college professor and has a PhD, and still everyone hates him. I guess he feels the need to atone for his sins because he still lives there. It makes no sense.

Everyone in town is nice and cute (except when it comes to Liam) especially a woman named Penny who used to know Ty and basically forces Alicia to become best friends. Long story short, Alicia and Liam fall in love, everyone butts in and demand they quit it because Liam is evil, a huge secret is revealed and they lived happily ever after.

This book didn’t work for me at all. Liam was the story’s only redeeming quality and yet he made no sense. He was a bit of a nerd, so I appreciate the unconventional hero -- physicists aren’t common in romance unless they also happen to be super heroes or something like that. I liked the tortured, former bad-boy trying to redeem himself and I loved how he use science to make magic tricks. But no amount of self-hatred justifies staying in a town that hates you, especially after having turned your life around. But other than that, I thought he was adorable.

The rest of the characters were either flat, annoying or both. The heroine was uninteresting. I couldn’t connect with her and it was hard for me to care about her happiness when I wasn’t emotionally invested in her journey. The best friend, who plays a secondary role throughout the book and is in charge of delivering the final blow and big reveal, was so annoying that I wanted to skip her parts. She was pushy and judgmental.

I can’t resist a Contemporary Romance that hints at angst and emotional drama. But this one didn’t deliver and left me feeling disappointed and completely unsatisfied.

When I first read a review of this book on a blog it intrigued me. I'm glad I got to read this story with such flawed and believable characters. Alicia dealt with some really tragic stuff from the beginning of this book and somehow kept rising to the occasion. I guess the name of her bookstore, The Phoenix, was appropriately named. This was a really sweet, sad story with a great ending.

Alicia is a recently widowed woman who has moved her kids and self to her husband's hometown to run the bookstore his parents own. She is trying to hang on to her memories of him and do right by them. There is a bit of sorrow to her that seems to lighten up when Liam is around.

How are the sex scenes?

Emotional. There is very little sex and the descriptions are brief and tame.
(i.e., an orgasm is explained as "she gasped" and "he tensed").

How are the story lines?

Realistic and confusing (at the beginning). The book's description says "no one wants the...widow and the...bad boy together", but we do not find out why until the end.

This was just an ok read for me. I enjoyed it, but not as much as I thought I would. It is a good story and deals with some really serious issues. I really felt for Alicia and the difficulties she faced moving on with her life without her husband Ty with her. It made me think about all of the real people out there who have lost someone important to them because of the war. It really was heartbreaking. I had some really high hopes and expectations for this book, and while there were some parts I definitely enjoyed, I hate to say that overall, this one really didn’t work that well for me.

Alicia’s husband wanted to move their family back to his hometown and take over his father’s bookstore. When he was killed in action, Alicia honors his wishes and moves herself and two small children back to his childhood home. Only life isn’t what Alicia expected. She finds herself attracted to Liam, the childhood best friend of her late husband, and an entire town who doesn’t want to see the two of them together.

Despite the town’s constant butting into her life, Alicia and Liam develop a close friendship that over time blossoms into more. As scared as Alicia is to love again, the pull between her and Liam is one that she has the hardest time overcoming, and with Liam out to prove what a wonderful man he’s become, Alicia might be willing to give love a second chance.

The biggest thing that annoyed me about this book was Alicia’s supposed best friend Penny. Although they had only met once or twice before Alicia’s move, Penny swooped in and demanded the two become besties. That didn’t bother me, but it was the incessant nagging and badgering and putting down that Penny did to Alicia for her relationship with Liam. It was almost as if Penny was jealous of their friendship and developing relationship, so she constantly told Alicia she shouldn’t hang out with Liam, shouldn’t give him a chance, and many time insinuated that Alicia was somehow betraying her husband’s memory. The woman was rude and insensitive and she drove me up the wall from the moment she first stepped onto the page. Even after learning her true reasons behind it, I felt as if it didn’t justify her crappy behavior towards her supposed best friend.

I’m a big fan of romances that develop a friendship and slowly progress to love – when they are done right. While I liked the time Alicia and Liam took to become friends and then more, I also felt as if they danced around each other a lot. They had chapters of push and pull, angst and indecision that started to feel less like the slow-burn and more like wishy-washy character flaws. I wanted to believe in their romance, but it never really seemed to click for me.

Now, I’m going to reveal a huge spoiler, which is something I don’t normally do, but it was also one of the bigger plot points that made me scratch my head and wonder WHY exactly it needed to be a part of the story.
**SPOILER: We find out toward the end of the book that Penny’s high school aged daughter is actually the child of Alicia’s late husband. For me, it really ruined the image of Alicia’s husband, and felt like it was a way to justify Alicia’s moving on. I didn’t think it added anything good to the story, and instead left me feeling just plain bad for everyone involved. I thought the book would have been just as strong without it, and was hugely disappointed with this information.**

All in all I was disappointed that this book didn’t live up to the potential that I initially saw in it. With a lackluster romance, and secondary characters who drove me bonkers, there wasn’t much to pull me in and keep me happy.

**secrets between friends. There were a trio of friends who grew up in this small town...Ty, Liam, and Penny. Now Alicia is good friends with both Liam and Penny, but she doesn't know all their secrets...whoa, the twists in this story line were fantastic!! I really loved this aspect of the story!

**bookstore. Alicia is a bibliophile and has come home to take over her father in law's bookstore since he's had a stroke and can't run it anymore. She collects rare editions and the parts of the story that revolved around her love of books was FABULOUS!!

**University professor. Liam is a physics prof at UNC. He's constantly doing little physics tricks. It made me want to start doing science experiments. Just a fun little detail to the story.

**Ty was a war hero who died in Afghanistan. It's no secret that I love military guys, but as a spouse, it's so hard to be the one at home handling everything when they're gone. The author showed this in a beautiful way with Alicia while still showing a great respect for Ty's sacrifice too. Military families have it really hard and this book showed that beautifully.

I really adored both Liam and Alicia. They're in a difficult position with the rumor mill in this small town and their undeniable chemistry. Not only are things tough in a small town, but with their individual ties to Ty, it makes their relationship virtually impossible. I liked the way that the author wrote the intricacies of their relationship and how she worked it all out. Really a brilliant stroke of amazing and entertaining story telling. This book is definitely going into my reread pile! It was fabulous!

Alicia, the widow, was all over the place, for one thing. She kept falling into insta-relationships, but then wobbled between feeling extremely close to her new besties and not being sure she could trust them. She was referring to Penny as her best friend very quickly, after only having met her once before--she'd been a close friend of her husband Ty's--but in practically the same thought bubble she'd wonder about Penny's motivations in giving advice. Not that I blame her, because Penny's "advice" seemed to consist mainly of slamming Liam, and insisting that he was bad for Alicia and she should stay far away from him.

Alicia's relationship with Liam, her husband's best friend from high school, was similar. At one point VERY early in their relationship, Alicia thought to her herself that it was so nice that Liam LOVED her children. My mental brakes went on right there--he'd spent a little time with Gemma, her daughter, but not nearly enough to label it with the L word yet. And I'm not even sure he'd been in the same room with the baby at that point--at least not while Jason was conscious and not having dinner.

Alicia and Liam's constant "we're drawn to each other" juxtaposed with "but we cannot be together; it's wrong" drove me absolutely crazy. It went on way too long to be healthy for them or interesting to the reader. I get the grief and guilt factors, but there needs to come a time where you're either ready, so you move on, or you aren't, so you stop leading a person on and let them go. This all felt very forced, as if the author were trying to create conflict where there wasn't any, or at least make that conflict go on longer than it should have.

Speaking of conflict, the entire town drove me crazy. As far as I could tell, the townspeople had very few redeeming qualities. Everyone either told Alicia what a saint and hero her husband had been--nice, in a way, but also painful to a recent widow, especially one who is trying to move on--or what an evil bad boy Liam still was. There was no in between, and their constant need to put their two cents in at all times was annoying.

As for the "big secrets" in Ty, Liam, and Penny's past, I found it fairly easy to figure them out early on so the big reveal was pretty darn anticlimactic. Plus, Penny's role in the deception made it even harder for her to have any moral high ground on which to continue her Liam-bashing. In all, it was a frustrating book--doubly so because I really did want to enjoy it.

Where The Heart Lies by Michelle Garren Flye is a lovely story about guilt, redemption, and the power of love. This easy read has a likeable hero and heroine and some interesting plot twists.

This was one of those sad yet sweet stores that was chuck full of drama. I absolutely LOVED Alicia's strength, she is the type of character that makes you want to become a stronger person. She has a big beautiful heart that is so willing to give love and eventually forgiveness where most people probably wouldn't. y the title of this book I truly expected to find characters lying to one another over and over again, but instead I found some great characters and relationships. Story of finding your life again after the loss of your spouse, trying to live the dreams you had as a couple as a single parent. Set in small town NC, complete with small town gossip and secrets. Good romance, that struggles due to their decision that it is "forbidden" love. Lots of bookshop references.
