The best book I ever read: both content and form are brilliant. A long story (800 pages) is told by a man who "needed" to destroy his lifetime project: a historical museum. It all started in idyllic (?) Masuren (Masovia) prior to World War I and went over the Nazi time, the escape full of losses during winter 1944/45 and the new start in Western Germany. It is pessimistic in its view that ideologies may never change - but also optimistic in the sense that a new generation may overcome old ...more

Erinnerungen an das ostpreußische Lucknow - wohl nicht allzu weit von der Biographie des Autors entfernt. Dann die Vertreibung und das Ankommen im Westen. Und der Erzähler schleppt auf dem Weg zumindest einen Teil des Heimatmuseums mit, das sein Onkel aufgebaut hat. Und sowohl vor/während des Krieges wie auch danach im Westen muss er die Ausstellung gegen Ideologisierung verteidigen - und tut das schließlich, indem er das neu errichtete Heimatmuseum West lieber abfackelt.
