Talk about your guilty pleasures, or would guilty hilarity be more accurate? I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard at a book! I thought I was going to pee my pants when Granny shot that chicken. And I think people in Trenton, NJ and people in DeRidder, LA must have something in common.
On a less flattering note, I didn't like all the swearing, but after a while my mind didn't read them, almost like my eyes were editing, and I could skip right over without registering t...more

This was my introduction to Janet Evanovich. As it turns out, the character of Stephanie Plum was very engaging. The mystery itself didn't really interest me very much, since I spent the whole book wondering why she was investigating the murder at all...it being outside the scope of her job description, and all. When you're weaned on Agatha Christie's Poirot mysteries, most other mysteries will seem lame and poorly thought out in comparison. However, this was still a very entertaining listen...more
I've seen JE everywhere, but it wasn't until I mentioned it on an Amazon forum, that I got serious about reading the Stephanie Plum series. I bought a used book #1, then found the Three Plums in One at the library. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to cut back on the language, a couple of notches, but I LOVE the books!
Stephanie has lost her job, in book 1, so goes to work for her Cousin Vinnie, as a bounty hunter. She's totally inept, and gets into more trouble than anyone I've ever seen...more

Ok, I'm about halfway through the first book. I *should* go back to my other books, but I can't renew it, so that's my excuse to keep reading.
Otherwise, these would be going straight into my stash of "books to read when I need a pick-me-up" along with Terry Pratchett's Night Watch (Discworld) books. I hoard them like a magpie hogging shiny things, and look at them with anticipation of a day when I just need a mental break and something to enjoy. The writing style is flip...more

I had never heard of Janet Evanovich before this. I just ran to the bookstore and grabbed this audio book in a hurry. What a hoot! Very well narrated and even my husband loved them. We laughed all the way on the unplanned road trip.
Evanovich does a hilarious job of blending Stephanie Plum’s character as a ‘balls of brass’ woman with a cute, ditzy amateur who is desperate enough for money to try her hand at bounty hunting…tracking down the man who ‘stole’ her virginity. It is amazin...more

First off, I love Lori Petty's narration and I'm sad that she didn't do any more beyond the first 3 books. I really enjoyed these audiobooks, and if you like Janet Evanovich's books, I think you'll love the audiobooks.
One For the Money - Stephanie is laid-off and looking for a way to make money quick because her car's just been repossessed and she has no food in the fridge. She becomes a bail-bondsman for a cousin and her first job is an old boyfriend who was her first. This boo...more

I selected this for a book club intro package, knowing nothing whatsoever about Evanovich or Plum.
What a delightful, refreshing surprise! I long ago tired of both the earnest, hard-working, well-meaning, clean-living devoted wife & mom (Faye Kellerman) and the confused, vulnerable, dysfunctional yet persistent damsel just waiting for the sexy antihero to complete her (Tami Hoag).
No, Stephanie Plum is something else entirely, and I love her. She's a Jersey Girl (which i...more

What can I say that I'm sure other readers haven't already said. I loved these first three books by Janet Evanovich. Stephanie is wacky, funny and vulnerable most the time and her luck is terrible. She can't keep a car running except the evil Buick she is doomed to and Grandma Mazur is a hoot. Reminds me of Sophia from Golden Girls on TV. The other characters are great and give a sense of family, a disturbed family but hilarious. I plan on reading every book in this series, as soon as I get my h...more
Recommendation from a high school friend (Ms Nase) when I was complaining that I didn't know what I was going to do once Sue Grafton reached Z is for Z-word. I'm amused by these three - they're much lighter in tone that Grafton has been recently, but still has plenty of odd people, weird happenings, and a sense of mystery. I like the series enough that I'll keep following it. As she's up to 15 (I think) now, it ought to be a while before I get caught up - especially, if I keep rationing the myst...more
I've actually finished the next two books after these three so I'm a little fuzzy on when I finished this one, not to mention, all five books are kind of blended together.
Several bits of information gets repeated in the first several books, but I suppose if someone didn't start at the beginning for some reason, or didn't, like I did, read them all in rush they probably wouldn't have noticed it, while I found it kind of annoying.

I read the first book... & read 1/2 of the second book... & then realized that I was completely dragggggiinngg myself through it... I had NO excitement to "find out what happeneds next" etc..
YEA, I laughed a couple times... *yawn*, but really I could see myself setting in for a LONNNNGGGGG series of DUMB "who done it & why" crap... with a few laughes thrown in... that I wasn't willing to read.
ANYWHO's.... enjoy if you want... not my cup of tea!

These books are the best. I read seven of them so far. Especially growing up in New York and New Jersey, it brings back all those memories, the accents, the food, the family who are always in your business. Kind of reminded me of the show the Nanny. so funny and well written. The mystery always kept me going. The characters were all funny and so memorable! I could hear their voices in my head while reading it. A great summer fun read.
Lori Petty is reading these and I love Lori Petty.
I only listened to One for the Money on this set. Sadly, it is too abridged for me. When I went from disc 2 to disc 3, I felt like I had missed a whole disc and didn't understand how we got from there to here in the story. I'm big frownie facing this because I don't think Lori Petty reads the unabridged versions. That makes me sad because she did an awesome job.

Rather than rating each book in her series - I will try to find the ones that are bound together to make it easy. The Stephanie Plum books are just funny, light reading with some murder mystery thrown in. My kids know when I am reading one of her books because i actually laugh out loud at the characters because Janet Evanovich makes you seem like you are right in the middle of it.
I love Stephanie Plum, the main character of Evonovich's books. Stephanie is a misfit bounty hunter who always gets her "man" in the end, but suffers through many haphazzard and whacky events along the way. It's a battle of good vs. evil with a hilarious twist. I've read the first 15 (they all have a number in the titles - the first being One for the Money). Quick and funny reads.
These books are very funny, slap-stick comedy. They will make you laugh out loud! They are good to take in the car when driving and waiting for kids. Not much thought involved, but VERY funny. Good for a laugh. Well written and entertaining. I always sugggest these to friends who haven't read in a while to get them back into reading.
I have actually read all the books in the numbered series. They are my go to sick day books or plane ride read. It isn't that they are wonderful, they sort of all blend together after a while. Reading them is the same as watching a favorite sitcom, you like the characters and it entertains you, but it isn't mind boggling.
Ok, so now I'm starting to get the attraction to Evanovich - this was much better than 'Full Blast'. I'll definitely try more in the Stephanie Plum series. They are not deep thriller mysteries, but quick reads with enough to keep you interested. More because of the characters than because of the plot.
Fun, light comedy. Stephanie Plum is one walking accidental mishap after another. Her spandex-loving friend, Lula, and her gun-toting grandmother
are hysterically funny sidekicks. When I want to laugh, not think too hard, and unstress - these books are perfect!

1/7/08: I finished the first book and all I have to say is I am totally hooked. I loved the characters and the storyline. I kept my interest the whole time. If I hadn't needed to do other things, I could have read the whole story in one sitting.
1/15/08: I finished Two for The Dough today. I truly enjoyed this book. A great storyline, excellent pace, everything a chick-lit/mystery should be. It took me 8 dkays to read because I was a Maid of Honor and had an eye issue. Otherwis...more

These were very easy reads and there are now 5000 of them it seems like. If you are looking for a read during a road trip or something easy, I suggest it. Stephanie Plum is a very interesting character and fumbles upon some interesting/capturing stories.
This book includes the first three novels in the Stephanie Plum mystery series. Stephanie who is out of work and desperately in need of money decides to try her hand at being a bounty hunter. Being a little bit on the scatterbrained side, she gets herself into all sorts of interesting situations. The novels are humorous and make for light, enjoyable reading.
I always skipped over these books at Barnes & Noble due mainly to their covers; but don't let that stop you. These books are fun, hilarious, and still a mystery. Yeah, some things maybe obvious, but there will be just as much, if not more, that you won't see. Take the time and try these books. If you don't like the first one, than you haven't missed anything, but the series continues to get better with each book. Like I said, I wasn't crazy about the books initially, but when my cousin recommend...more
Stephanie Plum is like Kinsey Millhone's well-intentioned but hapless younger sister. Her family is hilarious, her bounty-hunting skills are questionable at best, yet somehow Stephanie always gets it right. These are really great books, really funny with just the right amount of grit & scare. Plus, they take place in New Jersey, someplace I've actually been--total bonus. If you don't love Grandma Mazur, something's wrong with you!
I didn't actually read all three at once. Not too shabby, and on the heals of Domino Harvey, I really got into the books! Unfortunately, they didn't keep my attention enough to read all 13 of them....
I didn't really like this book but I did find myself caring for the characters so I kept reading. I wasn't really satisfied with it so I decided to skip the rest of the series. It gets a 2 out of 5
Loved them and honestly thought I'd read them and then something else in between the next three but I just couldn't. I started reading the next three right away!
The humor in these is a little over the top at times, but still - if you like a fun mystery, Stephanie Plum is the way to go. Especially her fashion sense.
Stephanie is a hoot! I found myself reading parts of the books out loud to my husband because he wanted to know why I was laughing so hard. My daughter and daughter-in-law love them too!
I have not enjoyed reading a book so much. These stories will not only keep you guessing but also make you laugh out loud. My family just shakes their head at me when I pick up one of Janet Evanovich's books. They know that I will not put it down until I am finished.
