Is there anything to be learned about a history of philosophy by looking at its external dimensions? Let’s compare the relative quantity of space dedicated to several major portions of the history of philosophy as found in three different works :: Hegel’s, Russell’s, and Copleston’s. We’ll move from Thales to German Idealism.

Hegel’s three volume Lectures on the History of Philosophy is 1494 pages long (excluding the index). The introduction is 150 pages long ; then he begins in Greece.
