A především - dětem ani puberťákům do ruky rozhodně nepatří!

Do NOT read it... EVER... Only if you want to be perform the suicide by getting bored to death. I don't even know how I've managed to read through it. Oh I do now. I read it for 5 minutes, then almost fall asleep, hence went to do something less boring (like staring at the wall) for about an hour. I repeated this cycle for many times and that's how I read through it.

It's just a collection of extremely boring and extremely Jesus-friendly stories about how it is awesome to live at the countryside

I've always wanted to find this in English, but always found only one copy at a time, usually for about $300. In a 'duh' moment, I checked my local library--ta da! One copy, on its way to me...

Sounds as if it's to Czechs what 'Little Women' is to Americans...

This is a delightful book by a late 19th century Bohemian (Czech) writer who focused on the "lower" classes in her country. Grandmother leaves her beloved village to live with her daughter and her children because their father works for the Princess and spends half the year in Vienna. Grandmother is one of those delightful characters in this type of fiction who knows everything and can always be counted on to keep a secret and give good advice. She also models how religious many of the peasants ...more

I see why this utopian novel is the founding piece of Czech literary nationalism. Set in north-eastern Bohemia in the early 19th century, it tells a story of an almost idealised hamlet through an idealised, purified elderly woman (this is the utopian part) who is wise, traditional, of the soil (even though she moved there to be with her daughter), and is universally loved. The novel creates, in the context of Bohemia's place in the Austrian (later Austro-Hungarian) Empire, a sense of love for ...more

The Grandmother (Babicka) - Bozena Nemcova When I was young, my favorite book was Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Alcott's tale about Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy went a long way toward forming my ideas about fairness, kindness, and how to get along in life. The Grandmother serves the same purpose in the Czech Republic. Published originally in 1853 -- 15 years before Little Women -- The Grandmother tells the story of an elderly country woman in northeast Bohemia who comes to live with her daughter ...more

My Czech friend gave this book to me and told me it was a classic in Czech literature. Nemcova wrote this book in 1855. It was inspired by her own childhood in a small Bohemian town where she lived with her parents, siblings, and maternal grandmother.

All the events and characters in this book revolved around the central character of Grandmother. It gave a real sense of time and place in what is now the Czech Republic. Grandmother was highly revered by her grandchildren and neighbors. She follow

Kā gan es varētu Dieva Tā Kunga priekšā par to atbildēt? Nē, nē kam dzīslās rit čehu asinis, tam jāpaliek pie čehu valodas."

This book was recommended by a Czech friend as "the most famous book of the Czech Republic." I enjoyed it immensely. It's slow moving and took me a very long time to read but I really loved immersing myself in the world and writing. Much of it read like a folktale (particularly the parts about Viktorka), which is one of my favorite things. The writing itself was simply beautiful and I found a lot of wisdom in its pages. This is a book that I am already planning to read again.

Even though my mom's simultaneous translation from Czech while she was reading this book to me ages ago was much better than the poor translation I read now, I guess I was too young then to comprehend the essence of the story. Reading it now on my own gave me a deeper understanding of its value which lead me to treasure it to a much greater extent than I've expected. There is a lack of dynamics but on the other hand the writing style is very easy, clear and picturesque. Even though due to my ...more

...more

At 200 pages, it drags. Not a good sign. However, I can see why it's a Czech classic. I've seen a few reviews saying that it's overly sentimental and idealized but I don't really agree... Vitorka's story etc would be enough to refute that. It's major problem for me was that it's quite directionless. It is worth reading however because a) early Czech classic - its integration of folktales, rituals etc gives you a great sense of the time/place/people, b) hey, a female author in the 1800s! c) ...more

Heard about Božena Němcová during our recent trip to Prague. Our guide, while touring the 'Municipal House', mentioned that she was one of the few women who had a statue (bust) in the opera house. She is a popular literary figure in the nationalist Czech history. 'The Grandmother' is one of her more popular stories.
It is a nice peek into Bohemian life in the late 1800s. It brought back fond memories of my grandmother and her quiet wisdom. Quick and easy read.

Very interesting book, probably not for too often re-reading but glad I did it this time. sometimes had struggle with archaic words but guessing times changed a bit from the moment book was written so it's only natural that language is evolving.
Overall very nice description how the life in past was and what people were doing on daily basis.

I read it in original Czech language and it is one of the must to read books in Czech literature. It shows the irreplaceable role of the grandmother and for those who coudn't enjoy the care of mother it is an example of the "angel gardian" who is there instead and ready for grandchildren to give all the love, care and support what they need.

If you want to learn anything about Czech history and mentality, read this book which Czechs keep as national treasure. It's the touching story about a Czech woman (grandmother), her family, their live and traditions in the part of Europe which is nowadays Czech Republic during the early 19th century.
