For readers aged 9-11, this is a touching, fictionalized account of famed trumpeter Louis Armstrong’s quest to earn enough money for his first trumpet. This beautifully illustrated book is a great read-aloud for primary students. We learn details about Armstrong’s family and childhood, including the New Orleans of his youth. For young musicians, there are many jazz references that could lead to further exploration.
