Pio is an Ahachmai Indian. Many members of his tribe live at the San Juan Capistrano Mission. When they hear that sea pirates are coming to raid the mission, the padres and Indians hide the valuables and pack food. They escape into the hills. Pio stays behind so that he can warn his people by ringing the big bell called San Vicente. This book is a good adventure novel that teaches young children about California history.
