The Auspicious Troubles of Chance (The Auspicious Troubles of Love #1)
by
Charlie Cochet (Goodreads Author)
Chance Irving is a young man with a gift for getting into trouble-not surprising, as trouble is all he's ever known. After losing everything he held dear one fateful night, he decides to leave New York and his past behind, and joins the French Foreign Legion. But even in Algiers, Chance can't seem to shake his old ways, and he ends up being transferred to a unit made up of...more

If you are thinking this will be a fully fledged war story don't worry its not, so you can relax and enjoy the complicated, fascinating and vibrant life of Chance. I couldn't help but laugh at his intro and the amusing recollections of his escapades what a wonderful and sad journey he had. A non-conformist he pushes the envelope, in every which way he can even if it's to his own detriment. Once he meets Jacky, who soon works him out and knows exactly how to handle Chance which he does beautifull...more
I was initially drawn to this because of the title. It has to rank in at least my top 5 favorite titles of all time.
I love that the book itself lived up to the title! This story is the most comforting of comfort reads. Much of it is set in the desert (Chance joins the French Foreign Legion in the 1920's) and the setting there is fantastically well described. Chance complains of getting too much sun, but the heat never felt oppressive, just warm and bright and open and sunny.

This book was an unexpected pleasure. I didn't pay the blurb much attention, I just thought the title was cute and so I read with little idea of what I was getting into. It's a period piece, set in the 1920s and it's also written in the first person; these two things combine to make the writing a bit clunky at first, but once you get into it, all is forgiven and some of it is actually quite funny. The beginning was a bit rushed (as was the ending - so minus a star for that), but the middle bit w...more
Charlie Cochet has become one of my favorite authors. She cannot write fast enough for me. When I'm reading her stories, I feel like I'm watching a movie. I can totally see everything playing out in my head as I'm reading. This is especially true of Chance's story. The characters are very well written and you will fall in love with them all. Jacky is just what Chance needs, whether he knows it or not. And I loved Johnnie, Alexander and Bobby. I'm so glad there are at least 2 more stories in this...more

To talk about this book, I have to divide it into three parts. Beginning, middle, and end.
Beginning: (5 hearts)
It came as a shock, at first, to be spoken to directly from the narrator. It took a little adjusting, but Chance’s wit carried me through the slight awkwardness, and soon I fell in love with the style. Chance’s voice is funny, rude, blunt and sobering. The way he thought and narrated just made his character all the more endearing.

The Auspicious Troubles of Chance by Charlie Cochet is a great heartwarming love story! This is the second book I have read by Ms. Cochet, and to be honest, this author can’t write fast enough for me! She is able to combine wit, charm and sexy males in the first part of the Twentieth Century like no other author I’ve read.

I'm speechless! How is it that this is the first time that I read one of Charlie's book!
The first lines sucked me right in and before I knew it, I was already at the last ones of the book! I truly enjoyed reading it and will definitely hunt for more...
I love it when characters are flawed like the rest of us and that it was not just a book filled with smut like so many out there. The romance was just as good as the sex scenes!

Upon seeing that The Auspicious Troubles of Chance, by Charlie Cochet [Dreamspinner Press, 2012] was a story involving the French Foreign Legion—that romanticized bastion of rugged masculinity set in the middle of a desert—it peaked my curiosity. Although it is the type of setting just begging to be used in an M/M story, it has somehow been overlooked. Equally puzzling is that it didn’t figure into the front cover design. “If you don't create change, change will create you.” – Unknown
Even when Chauncey Irving isn’t looking for trouble, trouble seems determined to find Chauncey Irving, and there was indeed a time when the man went purposefully looking for it with a certain sense of obsessive need. Until, that is, a very wise boy taught Chauncey a little lesson about what it means to live and think and behave outside the confines of his own existence and to start considering the one who considers him above...more

This was my first Charlie Cochet's book and, after reading The Auspicious Troubles of Chance, I'm planning to quickly change that fact.
When Chauncey Irving – Chance – was seven years old, his parents left him at the orphanage. The boy soon escaped and started living on the streets of New York. The fortune smiled at him when Marie, a young actress in the Cleopatra theater, found him and took him with her. Among the chorus girls and stagehands, Chance found both home and family. He learned how to...more

This book begins with a very engaging narrative voice in the character of Chauncey Irving. After a brief and nebulous taste of the present day, the story immediately dives into a flashback that sets up Chauncey's character and all the events to follow, and comprises almost all of the remaining story. It took a little while for me to find the meat of the story under the charm, but once I did, this turned out to be an amusing, entertaining and occasionally poignant story. Chauncey loses his first...more
I really enjoyed this story and the way it was written, it was definitely character driven. Characters who are flawed always call to me and leave more of an impression. Chance is definitely one of those. You spend a good deal of time in his head but it was never boring or dull and reading about the way he saw things was sweet, heartbreaking at times and really made me laugh. You know he wants to be happy, even if he doesn't say it or does everything possible to get further from it. I loved the i...more
The book starts a bit slowly for me -- I think the narration / writing in the beginning contributes to that. In the beginning, Chance seems to "talk" to us readers in journal-writing style, which makes it more about "telling" than "doing". So I struggle a bit -- at least until the point where Chance joins the French Foreign Legion, meets Jacky and the brats (Alexander, Bobby, Johnnie).
When Chance gets to meet them, I finally feel involved with his story. It has more interaction, and I enjoy the...more

This is the first book I have read by this author but I will definitely be actively seeking out anything else she writes. The first part of the story deals with the events in Chance's life that lead up to his joining the French Foreign Legion and meeting Jacky. Although this is Chance's story, I totally fell for Jacky. He is strong, patient and infinitely caring. This is clear in the relationships he has built with Bobby, Alexander and Johnnie and the new relationship he slowly begins with Chanc...more
Lovely and heartbreaking, but mostly hopeful and joyous. Love Chance and Jacky, and even the supporting characters are well-fleshed. Dare i hope that somewhere, sometime, there will be short little scenes somewhere showing the rest of the little "family" finding their happy endings? I like that there's no magic cure for Jacky's injuries; he's using a cane even, what, roughly a decade after his injuries. But he has a glass-half-full mentality that's very appealing, and that mostly seems to rub of...more

This book has mostly great reviews, so I picked it up. WAS THAT EVER A MISTAKE!!!
This book has to be one of the stupidest books I've read in a very long time. From the very first paragraph to the very last. This is just horrible! I'm sorry, guys. ANYONE who rates this book as 4-5 stars needs to go back to kindergarten and start over.
The plot, what little there is, is totally dumb. The characters are dumb, and the dialog is like something out of a VERY VERY BAD "B" gangster movie. If this is goin...more

Okay, so this book starts out a little rough and very slow. I'm not very fond of flashbacks which is why the beginning was rough for me. With this story, the beginning/prologue is in the present, the ending/last chapter is in the present but the rest of the story is in the past. It's interesting the way it's handled but throughout the whole story, I just wanted it back in the present!

Different Historical that takes place in Africa during the WW. This is drama about the characters more so than a plot driven book, so I don't know how absolutely realistic it was. But it was a very fine story. I like strong Character stories. So, this was a delight and I thoroghly enjoyed it.
It is a High quality story, with a unique voice. I highly recommend it for something different to read. =D

I really enjoyed the characters in this book, even the secondary ones. The tale is told well, with a little angst and a lot of humor. Possibly my favorite thing about it was the setting, which was unique. The author did a great job of using the language of the time and letting the reader feel the locations. An really enjoyable read.
I know this is getting lots of great reviews, but it just wasn't my thing at all. I found it by turns cheesy, sappy, insipid, and irritating, with huge helpings of "let's all stand around and talk about our feelings". There's very little actual action or plot, and lots of spelling out each and every feeling word by word. And then when we get to some plot, it's just as artificial and unbelievable as the rest of the book.
The tone reminds me of the cheesy 20's style of exposition, especially those...more

Loved this story. It was so much fun and so moving at the same time, I couldn't put it down. Charlie has quickly become one of my "must-buy" authors.
The beginning was rough. Then it got a little more interesting. Then it ended. And I liked the ending. I would read a sequel.
I was really not sure what to expect from this book. Maybe that's why I had put off reading it for a while. But what a surprising little gem this is! I'm not a great lover of historical fiction, but this was a great read and I truly enjoyed it.
I loved seeing the growth of Chance as a character; both his growing up and the growth of his relationship with Jacky. I would love to read more about some of the additional characters that were introduced to us in this book (hint, hint lol) as they seemed...more

m/m Romance author by day, artist by night, Charlie Cochet is quick to succumb to the whispers of her wayward muse. From Historical to Fantasy, Contemporary to Science Fiction, no star is out of reach when following her passion. From hardboiled detectives and society gentleman, to angels and elves, there’s bound to be plenty of mischief for her heroes to find themselves in, and plenty of romance,...more

“I'll let you in on a secret. I don't drink coffee."
I genuinely gasped in horror. "The devil you say. Java is the nectar of the gods. I don't know if I can be with a man who doesn't drink coffee." I knew there was something sinister about him. I had no idea it would be that bad.”
