I usually like historical fiction, but this particular example has been so mitigated by the poorly-hidden didactic tautology of its too-many-cooks legion of anonymous authors and editors that it was rather difficult to enjoy. It also fell into a similar trap to the somewhat similar 'Da Vinci Code', in that it utilized a lot of poorly-researched materials and claimed them as fact.

A lot of the data matched up poorly with other historical accounts, especially when it came to numerical data. It...more

The Holy, Inspired and inerrant word of God! I can say no more than READ IT!

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all worlds; God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God; begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who, for us men for our salvation, came down fro...more

The bible is my only favorite book. It has more stores than any other chapter book I know. Now I know you may have read or heard of the Old Testament (Genesis through Malachi) and basically what God is trying to pass on through his kingdom, is that there will be a prophet sent by him to Earth, in man form to declare deliverance, forgiveness, savior, and eternal life to all who believe in him. Then there is the New Testament which speaks of the prophet name Jesus who is our Jehovah Jeri, our king...more

So it looks like the public has once again put a piece of crap atop the best seller list. Wow! No plausible or comprehensible story line, with hardly a semblance of order to the "book" if you can even call it that. Then there's the extremely vague and undefined characters, one of which disappears for 30 years with absolutely no explanation. It seems that the author suffers from a complete amnesia concerning the concept of a run on sentence(I went pages without seeing a period just an en...more

OK, I'm reading this in my Church class, so we're not that far into it yet. From what we read though, it's turning out to be real good. The story itself is great, but, it's just the way it's written. i guess I just don't like the author's writing style. i know it's the Bible I'm talking about, so, go easy when you start flaming me...
Here's how the review is going to work, everytime we finsish a book in it, I'll post a review on it. This is going to take a while:

Apparently my last review of the bible was erased... so in this review I will not say my thoughts... I will say however what Artemis the Squirrel told me... that:

"it is nice to live in a world of Free Market... but not free thinking... Viva fascism and censorship!!! You have freedom so long as you choose the market...you have freedom to buy what you can afford... you have freedom of religion so long as you chose the Christian faith (or any of the other major Market subordinate religi...more

I have a real feeling this read will take flight. It is the kind of book that has mass appeal and will most likely engage a large following.

The stories are interesting and the characters could be developed a little more; some of the background history of many characters begins with a long line of who "beget" who. I found myself wondering at the end if there would be a follow up story or book. From what I understand, you do not even have to read it. It is one of those books that a...more

This truly is the greatest Book ever written.
Writers and thinkers — and people in general — have spent countless hours trying to figure out the meaning of life. Why are we here? Where we are going?
The answers are here, as is every answer to every question you've ever had and ever will have — answered by Almighty God Himself, the One who created you and loves you more than anybody else ever could or will.
This is more than just a book. It's God's Holy Word, and it's all about Jesus Chr...more

I stared the Old testament in September 1995 and completed it (all the way through) by May 1996. I started reading the New Testament September 1996 and finished it by May 1997.
The Old Testament is such an eclectic book of scripture - you see the grace of God in the creation of Adam and Eve and the blessings he bestows upon Abraham, Issac and Jacob and in leading the children of Israel out of Egypt. Yet you also see that he had no tolerance for wickedness in the manner in which he had the chil...more

The inspired word of God!!! There was a time when reading this book was a chore, but now it fills me with authentic peace. It makes me complete.
I must admit, that at times I don’t understand everything that I read, but what I do get out of it is amazing. I only wish that everyone would come to the same conclusion.
I spent some time on here (Goodreads) reading others reviews on this precious book, and was saddened by what I saw. This book is not just “another book”… It’s the inspire...more

It's hard to tell how to rank The Bible. I like the King James Version because as much of it is beautifully written as is hopelessly awkward. I like Lamentations, the Psalms, Song of Solomon, lots of the individual stories in the Old Testament for their drama, and chunks of the New Testament. Revelation is nuts, though, as is Leviticus. And my enjoyment of the Bible does actually depend on who I'm talking to and what they're doing with it.

I grew up on this book (raised religious, ...more

A heartwarming story about this dude with crazy powers and an all-powerful imaginary friend. It's a bit like the TV show "Heroes", but instead of saving the cheerleader, the hero of this book has to save like the whole world!

There's lots of boring bits, but also some really good practical advice, like this passage about how to handle people who piss you off: "Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God", as well as practical legal advice: &q...more

The Bible has a few good thoughts on how to treat your fellow man (yes, I say 'man' on purpose) that are worth reading and even doing - though I don't think they're concepts one couldn't find outside of its covers. However, the multiple instances of genocide, women-hating and hypocrisy either authorized or practiced by the Judaic / Christian god far outweighs its good in the end. I'd have give it two stars for its gentler parts, but it really wasn't "ok" with all its sum parts. It's a...more

The Bible created books--the first codices were the Gospels, often imitated by gnostics past, present, and future but never matching the inspiration, authority, and preservation of the real thing presented here by the Author Himself. Before this were scrolls and scratching on stones. All readers owe a debt.

I like the King James Version, but many others are done well, and I check John 1:1 as a proof-text to say "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God...more

sometimes i wonder, do people really read this book? the last time i attempted to read through the bible was when i was still strongly believing in the church, though beginning to have serious doubts. about halfway through the new testament i decided to put it down. i found myself so disturbed by some of what i was reading rather than being inspiring it filled me with deep confusion and unpleasantness.
though i acknowledge there is much good within this book it is peppered with many weird thing...more

it's good, the bible, but not in it's entirety. one should not read it cover to cover. it's starts off really cool, you know, "and then there was light." then it drifts into geneologies that are just booooooooooooring. king david's story is good. there's some really good poetry and wisdom. the prophets rock! the end of the old testament is a waste of time.

that jesus character is great! really sad when he dies but then... well, i won't ruin for you (hint: easter). the letters from ...more

I'm not sure it's this edition of the Bible, but when i was young i was riding around on my bike in the alleys of my neighborhood and happend to see a black book sitting atop a heap of trash in an overfilled garabage can. It turned out to be the Bible. I just thought it didn't belong there, so i took it and have kept it ever since. What's interesting about this version is that along with the actual biblical text there is a running text that appears to help the reader interpret what he is to thin...more

This is all of literature in one book. It contains; early ideas about the origins of the species, family narratives that out-do soap operas in intrigue, lying, sex, and murder; long lists of dos and don'ts, most of which are laughably outdated, a key few of which are bases of human ethics; political writing equal to the best modern journalism, existential crises in individual lives, lyric poetry, symbolist poetry that pre-dates Rimbaud by millenia, revolutionary teachings of early communists, g...more

I was a very long while reading the whole of this book though I was very familiar with the outlines and the bones and leaned upon it long before settling in to seriously read it through. My sixteenth year Bible is now falling to pcs. but it is my "best" as it is the one with all the highlighting and writing in the margins and so on. Others which I own and which I read are less marked up but never-the-less get used -- one for travel, one for this spot and one for that spot -- within h...more
