Mr Right and Other Mongrels
by
Monique McDonell (Goodreads Author)
Blissfully happy in her own universe Allegra (Ally) Johnson is the sweet best friend everyone wants to have. Quietly and independently wealthy she runs a charming second-hand bookshop in beachside Manly. Heck, sometimes she even goes downstairs from her flat to run the shop in her Chinese silk pyjamas. It sounds like bliss. But is it enough?

This was a cute, fun breezy read. If you need some brainless book to read, do pick this up! Brainless is a compliment here. Don't you have those days where you just want to read something familiar that will end happily? That somehow even your life's in a mess, reading a happily-ever-after will put even just a smile on your lips, making you happy for a while, making you believe that there is hope in the world. That happiness can be found anywhere. When you're feeling down like that, read this boo...more

This story made me laugh with its silliness, and crazy characters. Real laughs that later turned into smiles and it started on the very first page:

First of all there is something you need to know about me. Dogs and I do not get along. It’s not that I don’t like them, exactly. In theory, I love them. In reality I have a full-blown hysterical dog phobia. Ok now. Wait. Don’t just decide you dislike me based on that. I know how dog people are. They simply d...more
My Review:
I think I'm developing a new obsession...Australian Contemporary Romance. This is another that I literally just fell in love with.
The heroine in this book, Ally, owns a bookstore, is terrified of dogs, and is pretty satisfied staying at home and drinking wine on a Saturday night while reading. She's a normal girl who falls into a relationship with an extraordinary hero and has no idea how exactly that happened. The other thing about Ally is that she just happens to be pretty darn weal...more

I really liked this light, chick lit romance. I love to read different chick lit from authors from around the world. England, Ireland, and now Australia. I find I get a cultural feel from their perspective of things in their different parts of the world. Not being a world traveler yet, it takes me away to these places as this novel did to the beaches of Australia. Allegra is a single bookshop owner who is afraid of dogs and grew up with an uncoventinal family. She meets Teddy by way of a dog and...more
Interesting heroine with a clear voice. There's charm and immediacy in the first person narrative with life wisdom woven through the story. The setting (Sydney) is beautifully brought alive. The cast of characters have distinct personalities and there's sense of lives flowing on, intersecting, changing. Perhaps an echo of the transient nature of many Australian coastal communities.
Distinctly Australian and definitely engaging.

Actually, I'd give this probably 4 1/2 stars-this computer seems to have messed up a little. I really enjoyed this book, only slightly less than Sophie Kinsella books (my all-time favorite). It was a free or very low-cost Kindle download that turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. I'd definitely seek out to read other books by this author.
A very entertaining, refreshing read. Set in Australia, with a ditsy lovely girl called Ally and a hot landscaping guru, Teddy Green. He falls for her and she never gets why, so she's ambivalent all thru the book. I liked the writer's writing style, humorous, and the characters were entertaining, especially Justin.
