The story begins in book one, Defying the Odds, when Romeo Moretti first fights Clay Powers in the MMA title match, then saves the day by saving his woman from a madman ex husband. This is how the story of Romeo and Juliet begins...Romeo the hero!!! **sigh!**

Jules is thankful, takes him out to dinner, blah blah blah...these two hit it off instantly, and one of the things that I really love about this story is how they don't fight their attraction to each other. They both know what they want, they both get what they want. It's when Romeo decides to move to Jules hometown to train with Clay at their awesome training facility that things get weird. Because Romeo comes from a pretty bad mafia type family, and he's definitely NOT the favored son. He sure is favored by Juliet, though!
Here's my Romeo and Juliet...Italian hottie and fit and hot blondie...

In fact, his two brothers are beginnig to get in over their heads with their family business, and Romeo is doing everything he can to get them away from that life. Same as he's always done, big brother Romeo tries to save the day and take care of the only two family members he has left. But you can't save those who don't want to be saved.

Jules is a pretty badass chick, more ripped than the normal contemporary heroine, but just as much girl. She's afraid of being alone for the rest of her life, stuck in this little town, living in her childhood home with her twin brother. Romeo is her match, and she knows it, but she's a cop and a lawyer, and Romeo is a mafia son, ex con, and secretive about it all.

Needless to say, while these two are star crossed, theirs is still a seemingly impossible love. But love they do, and I did too! This is one hell of a passionate story...betrayals and lies and deception everywhere, but also burst-out-of-your-chest passion and the love of family and friends. Don't wait if you've been saving this!

Our hero is named Romeo, and our heroine is named Juliet. It was perfect for me! I love stories with outer obstacles so much more than when they create inner obstacles themselves! And mafia connections and families who hate each other are two a very tangible obstacle. I couldn't figure out how on earth they were going to get their HEA. But rest assure, they do!

This book touched my heart. It was purely a personal experience, and a very rare one. And for that I will always love this book. How can I describe it without giving too much away?

I believed in the romance. I loved that they slowly fell in love and there was no hushing around it once they realized it <3 Romeo fought Clay (the hero in #1) in Vegas, and it's where our hero and heroine meet. Let's just say that there chemistry is off the charts! The first part of the book is hawt! After that, they talk on the phone almost every night and slowly build their relationship, and I loved this part!

Romeo was every bright color in a life that'd been nothing but dull and organized until he fell into it. It was terrifying and dangerous, and she felt alive because of it.

Take a dose of romance, MMA and Sopranos and you get this book! I enjoyed it even more than the first, but I have to say that I had a hard time conjuring up a picture of Romeo in my mind. Heavyweight MMA fighter, and Italian playboy didn't mesh in my head. Lol!

Me likey a lot! Four big stars!

Star Crossed is just… WOW. I can’t even find the words. Since reading an excerpt of Star Crossed a couple of months back, I’ve been excited about this book. When I finally got my fingers on it, I couldn’t wait to get started. First off, the hero and heroines’ names are Romeo and Juliet and the book is called Star Crossed [star-cross’d lovers ;) get it?]. I liked it well enough but I didn't love it.

I had a hard time with the beginning of Star Crossed. Love me some great dirty talkers, however, Romeo and Jules didn’t achieve a place in my Hall of Fame. Two night ago Jules had been celebrating this man’s defeat. She had shouted in triumph when Clay laid into Romeo viciously enough to be crowned heavyweight champion of the world, and everything about the moment had been amazing. Now the memory nearly ripped her heart out, and the realization was as bizarre as everything else about this night. She couldn’t give Romeo Wellings a heavyweight belt, but she could give him one night if that’s what he needed, because Lord knew, Jules needed it too.

This story starts with the events that ended Defying the Odds, book 1 in the Battered Hearts series. Romeo, having lost the heavyweight title earlier to Clay, had just helped save Clay’s girlfriend, Melody from her ex. He suffered minor injuries but was taken to the hospital all the same. Jules, one of Clay’s best friends and business partners, runs into Romeo later, insisting that she take him out to dinner as thanks for all that he did to help Clay and Melody. They have an instant attraction, but being on opposite sides in the MMA world, they should be enemies. They go to dinner, have a strong connection and spend one intense, sexy night together. They separate the next day, but Romeo has an invitation from Clay to come train with him at the training center he owns with Jules and her twin brother Wyatt. Romeo wants this badly, not only to help further his career but as a way to get some space between himself and his mob family.

Where the first book in the series had a stronger focus on the MMA world and actual fighting competitions, the fights are not center stage here. There are scenes following Romeo’s training, Romeo and Jules have a hot sparring session, and Wyatt lets his anger out on Romeo in a punishing fight. But the actual fighting wasn’t as present and I was just fine with that. Where those fights brought in an element of drama for Clay in his story, Romeo has all the drama he can handle with younger brothers both getting too involved in their father’s side of the family business. They’re a mob family and as much as Romeo hates it, he finds himself in the middle of it trying to find a way to keep his younger brothers safe. Nova is in too deep, having just replaced his father in the chain of command, but Tino, his youngest brother, goes with Romeo when he heads to Garnet to train with Clay. Unfortunately, the mob has a long reach and for the second time, they’re telling Romeo to throw his next fight. He didn’t do it the first time they asked and lost fairly, but this time the stakes feel higher and Romeo knows that he’ll have a target on his back if he doesn’t follow their orders and his life and now Jules will be in danger.

The romance between Romeo and Jules was so sweet and even more emotional than I was expecting. I had a very different impression of Romeo from book 1 then how he ended up truly being. He’s a man who’s been a father figure to his brothers from an early age, doing whatever it took to make ends meet after their mother died. He’s had the love from his brothers in his life, but he needs more, he needs Jules. She fills a hole in him that he can’t ever imagine living without again. After their one hot night together, the couple doesn’t see each other for weeks, but they text, talk and video chat (naughty video chats!) daily and they fall in love. They’re as close as two people can be when they finally set eyes on each other once Romeo gets to town to start his training. Jules is a tough woman, you cross her and she’ll put you in your place. But she and brother have been living lonely lives for way too long and she grabs on to Romeo with both hands. I loved that when they realized there was something very deep between them, they both committed and fell hard. Romeo knows that his family issues will eventually drive them apart, but Jules can’t stand the thought of letting love slip through her hands, especially after seeing what it’s done to her brother and she fights for it with Romeo.

If you don’t like emotional heroes, Romeo might not be for you. I love them. Romeo isn’t afraid to show his emotions, especially when it comes to his brothers or Jules. If he’s upset about something, he lets it out, if he needs to hug Tino, he does, he if needs to hold or be held by Jules it happens. For as badass as he is as an MMA fighter, he loves the people closest to him fiercely and it kills him to see the lives his brothers have fallen into and he blames himself for much of it. He’s an emotional guy and it made me love him all the more to see him express it.

He wanted to walk until he forgot everything, Tino who’d once been so full of love and joy, and Nova who’d planned on going to Harvard and doing something that made a difference in the world.

He wanted to walk until it didn’t feel like his fault that Tino had blood on his hands and Nova had dropped out of high school when he was sixteen.

He wanted to walk until it didn’t matter that he was probably going to die for a stupid fight and something as pointless as pride when he couldn’t help but feel like he had more to live for.

He wanted to walk until he forgot about Jules and the fact that he’d fallen in love with her when he knew this day was going to come.

Too soon.

He wanted to walk until it didn’t feel like his heart was going to shatter in his chest because he needed more time with her.

Whatever reasons he wanted to walk for, he knew he had to walk until he stopped crying.

Family plays a huge role in this story, as I’ve already mentioned Romeo and his brothers have much to deal with, but also Jules and her twin Wyatt get a lot of page time together. They’re all the other has had for years and they’re as close as siblings can be. Wyatt is a broken man. We don’t know much in the way of details, but a woman did a number on him years ago and he hasn’t recovered; he hasn’t let himself recover. His story gets set up in this one and I can’t wait to find out about the woman who’s made him the man he currently is. I can’t stand her already for seeing how it’s impacted Wyatt, but there are always two sides to every story and I’m excited to learn more about her and to know that Wyatt’s happy ending is coming.

I really loved this couple. Yes, there are cute jokes and references made to Romeo and Juliet, but this Romeo and Jules made me fall for them both, pretty much from the start. They’re such strong characters, but seeing them let go and be vulnerable with each other was engaging to read about and very romantic. (less)

I really liked the first instalment of this series so was hoping for good things from Star Crossed. For the most part I really enjoyed this. It was a lot longer and more complex than the first book. The MMA setting is the same which is great for me because it was that which attracted me to this series in the first place.

Romeo Wellings, a UFC fighter just lost a fight, and he is not happy about it. He also saves the life of Melody, his rival’s (Clay) girlfriend after the fight, getting injured in the process (all of this takes place in the first book of this series, Defying the Odds. But this can be read as a stand alone). Jules, is good friends with Clay, is also a lawyer, volunteer sheriff and Clay’s wrangler of sorts. To thank Romeo for all he has done for Clay she takes him out to dinner. Dinner turns into a heavily charged sexual tension hour, and they both head to a hotel for a night of passion. They go their separate ways, but they continue their relationship with lots of phone sex. When Clay invites Romeo to come to his small town and train with him, Romeo can’t resist.

I think what stands out in this book is the way Kele Moon writes her sex scenes. Romeo and Jules pretty much hop into bed from page one, yet I never felt like their chemistry lacked, nor did the sex scenes feel repetitive. Also in this book, they fall in love pretty quick. I think by the 40% mark there is love on both sides and again, it felt organic. Granted, time passes with each chapter, but I still felt like we are shown their love, not just told.

I liked Romeo as a hero. He is gruff, his Italian heritage really comes through (as with his two brothers) and being a UFC fighter, I find that extra sweaty, muscle, fighter attitude quite sexy. His family has connections with the mafia that comes into play in this book. He is very close with his two brothers, who at times I felt were a little much in this book. Van is this super smart (like really, really smart guy) that the mafia uses and abuses. He is caught up in some bad stuff. I wish the mafia stuff had been explained or shown to us a little more. Tino, his other brother is caught up in it too, and as a backlash, Romeo is pressured to throw his match. I like the mafia angle, but I think I needed to be told more about them.

As for Jules, she isn’t my favorite heroine. She is a lawyer/volunteer sheriff’s deputy/911 dispatcher/part-owner of the local training center. Yeah, she has a lot going on. I liked her personality, but I never felt like she was a lawyer. She felt more like Clay’s lackey. It was hard to get a good grasp on her. I did like that she is a taller heroine, with muscle. Not a petite girl, hooray! Her relationship with her brother (sheriff of the town) was a little intense. They are twins and sometimes she would lay in bed with him to watch tv with him just in his underwear – I don’t know. It just felt a little too close sometimes. Her brother also withholds a secret late in the book from her that I didn’t like at all.

This book is full of really alpha men. I mean- really, really intense, alpha boys. I kind of liked that. I feel sorry for any other poor souls who live in their small town. They don’t stand a chance. The supporting characters were a little too much for me in this one, but looking forward to more from this series.

Star Crossed is the second title in the Battered Hearts series. No, you don't have to read the first book in order to appreciate the second. However, its the first book that made me want to read the second and the third. And its the second book that made me interested in three other characters who I'm hoping get their own book. Definitely a 5 star read...not only for a fab story, the chemistry between Romeo and Juliet but for the man that is ROMEO !!
And WOW Romeo is completely amazing and delicious !! I was hooked right from the start..life could have stopped if I'd let it, though towards the end I just had to put it down to catch my breath and to try and prolong it as much as I could! This story is funny, sexy and completely addictive....

There are always books that surprise me with how good they are, because my expectations were so low, but this book did not disappoint. It was fantastic! I loved the entire story, even if it was more emotional than the last one. It was just right. Romeo and Juliet, this book was part retelling, part sequel, and a whole lot of sexy times! I think from the get go it was clear that the relationship with these two was gonna be hot and heavy. Juliet Conner is a former MMA Olympian, she is tough, and beautiful, and cursed. She has never seen an actual loving relationship last for anyone who has the last name Conner, and so when she has a one night stand with the man who saved the woman she considers her sister-in-law, she thinks nothing more of the incident. Until Romeo Wellings decides that he wants to come to her small town of Garnet to train, then all those feelings that she's been denying herself for so long come back up, and she doesn't think that she's ready for her own tragic love story. But in Romeo she find everything and more that she was looking for in a man, someone who is caring, loving, fun, and hilarious. But she knows that he's keeping secrets from her, because as much fun as they have together it is still clear that he's holding back large parts of himself from her. Then there's the fact that she knows that he is a former convicted criminal and her brother is the town sheriff.

Romeo Wellings has never been dealt a good hand in life, the outside child, of an outside family of a New York mafia boss. His mother died when he was 14 leaving him to raise his two younger brothers, one of whom is a certified genius, and from there it has been literally a fight for his lives. Now, he is an established cage fighter, with both his brothers getting deeper and deeper into the family business, Romeo wants them all free of this horrible inheritance. When he meets Juliet he see a life without all the baggage that he has been carrying around for so long. He realizes that he can fall in love, and be happy, as long as he has her. But he knows that he can't just walk away from his family either.

I loved this book so much. I loved how for such a long time, the two families were functioning separately, and so we got to know both of the main characters' families really well, the dynamics always felt so sweet and real, all the fighting, and even when they were upset with each other, it felt like a real family. I liked the way the story was told as well, I think Ms. Moon does a good job of transitioning through the various POVs.

I highly recommend this book even if like me you didn't particularly enjoy the first book, give this one a try is was way better. I would love to get more of all of these characters. I think if Shakespeare had met this Romeo and Juliet, there was no way he would've killed them. (less)

LOVE THIS SERIES! omg this series NEVER lets me down! Book one will always be one of my fav books ever and book two made that list as well!

I really want there to be a story about Valentino and Casanova. Gawdd those would be good stories.

This one was even better than the first one ,it was absolutely fantastic.
I loved it . The characters were unique , I don't think I ever read a book with characters similar to this one.
The writing was great , the story was compelling and H.O.T.There is usually something in every book that bothers but not in this one.There wasn't one thing that I didn't like about this one.

I hope the next book in the series gets published soon

This take on Romeo and Juliet I wish I had when I was in school it would have made for more interesting and compelling reading for all of us. I think even the guys in class would have loved this book as well. Romeo a UFC fighter with ties to the mafia what male wouldn’t love that and Juliet a badass attorney and part-time deputy, yes this is a Romeo and Juliet I would have not gotten the cliff notes on. Yes, I know it’s not age appropriate but still it would have been more fun!

The way the mafia was tied into this and the forbidden between Romeo and Jules because of the history with her twin brother, the struggle that Romeo had to want to protect Jules from outside forces. This was a man that was fierce not only in the cage but in his love for Jules as well as his two brothers. It was a crazy unfair world for him and at times it broke my heart that this strong and determined fighter was dealt such a crappy hand and at any moment that everything he loved could be taken from him.

I absolutely loved Jules she was just perfect for Romeo! She was no-nonsense kick your ass and in your face you did not mess with those she loved and you definitely didn’t mess with her. She was a girly girl but could take you down if need be. She totally rocked. When it came to Romeo they each loved both passionately and with all they had.

I loved the first book in this series but Romeo freaking stole my heart!! I laughed at the banter between Romeo and his brother “Tino”, or should I say Valentino and the love and struggle he shows with his brother Casanova “Nova”, yes those are their names, and I hope we see books for them as well. These men have met hardships and struggles and are continuing to do so but the love they show for one another is unbelievably heartwarming and at the same time wrenching.

Jules and her twin brother Sheriff Wyatt Conner share not just the twin bond but a bond that was brought on through tragedy as well. All Wyatt wants to do is protect the sister he cares for more than anything in this world even if it’s from the man she loves. Jules knows that Wyatt has suffered from his own loss at love and she’s determined not to lose hers she will do whatever it takes to keep her Romeo.

As in the original Romeo and Juliet the true love story that we all know, I cried liked a freaking baby because we all want a different ending for Romeo and Jules but in some instances families are just cruel in their making to begin with.

Kele Moon did a fantastic job bringing the fairy tale Romeo and Juliet and in this modern day version twisting it giving such power and emotion to a story that was already there but adding the heat and chemistry to these already strong passionate people just fueled the flames these two had for one another. Then emotional and past demons that come into play I never expected it to go where it did nor did I expect the tears to fall but as I turned each pages and the emotions built for these two it just made it that more bitter sweet. Ms. Moon had me loving not just Romeo and Jules but also his brothers as well as Wyatt even more.

I have to say as I regretfully read the last page and held my breath I can say without a doubt I am looking forward to Wyatt Conner’s book with great anticipation as well as trepidation this is one story I know I want and at the same time I know it is going to hurt my heart. As much as I love Romeo I love my bruised and broken Wyatt.

At first, I was a bit confused by the story's timeline. It starts with a prologue that takes place after the 1st chapter and then probably before like chapter 15. Mind you, the prologue was good. It hinted at why Juliet couldn't be with Romeo, but how she couldn't say no (to phone sex lol).

Review: WOW. Kele Moon’s second book in the BATTERED HEARTS series was even better than the first, and that’s saying something.

The only problem I had, and it was a relatively minor one, was the vague description of the dress Jules wears during a key scene early on in the story. The reader was left guessing what made the dress so special even though her brother and later her date, Romeo, both commented on the significance of her outfit of choice. The description came much later in the evening.

I wasn't prepared to like this one as much as I did. I figured that Jules and Romeo would be good for an affair, but didn’t expect them last. I think part of what made them did was how they were forced to get to know each other after their one night of hot sex, forced them to realize that they could have more than the sex.

Well, I'd recently read the two Eden books by Kele and loved them -so much that they had a second re read straight away. Kele is a new author to me so I was pleased to see the first two Battered Hearts series on Netgalley. I was hoping for more of the type that the Eden books are but these are far gentler – much softer romance story than the edgy, sexy Eden books.

Book two: Star Crossed....after feeling book one was a bit lightweight for me I was unsure of what I'd feel about book two but...its far better IMO. It follows the lives of two people we met in book one – Jules – AKA – Juliet, the local sheriffs twin sister and long time close friend with Clay from book one, and Romeo, he was the fighter Clay beat towards the end of last book. Romeo and his two brothers Casanova AKA Nova, and Valentino AKA Tino are connected to the NY Mafia and so Romeo is the typical “bad” boy in people’s minds where Jules is a lawyer and part time policewoman. (readers of past reviews may recall I have this thing about names...and though I could accept these romantic names from their Sicilian mother the Romeo and Juliet theme was a step too far for me. The tale didn't need that bit of twee – it was good enough to stand up without silly props)

Anyway, Romeo ends up coming to Clay for a few months for some training and the one night Jules had with him at the fight – and the constant phone calls and sexting they've exchanged – develops into a secret relationship. Both know their families will disapprove ( yes... just like the Montagues and the Capulets of Shakespeare) so until they're sure of their feelings they try to keep anonymous, but of course in small town Garnet with high profile people secrecy isn't that easy. There follows some wonderfully hot sex scenes, and lots of danger via the Mafia connection. I really enjoyed this book, the characters were great and Romeo was a great male lead, very tough and alpha and yet with a true sensitivity to Jules. Then there's Jules, tall and very fit, practises martial arts and trains people and she's such a tough lady she needs someone strong to respect. Romeo is perfect, he's not intimidated by her as so many locals are – they love and respect her but dating...nope, they’re too scared of upsetting her or her sheriff brother. Romeo’s brothers are worried about the connection with the police as they need to keep under the radar although its only Tino and Nova that are closely involved but the Mob know they'll all do anything to protect their brothers as they are so close. It means there's plenty of scope for intimidation, dirty tricks and hot romance. I loved Nova and think/hope that he gets his own story – he's super intelligent and very worthy as I feel he's got plenty of potential for a good torrid romance. I really like the three brothers and they're a worthy addition to the series. I'd also like to know more about the sheriff Wyatt and the mystery surrounding his past relationship[ that seems to colour his current stance on dating. Towards the end we learn his ex has moved into the area so I'm feeling that maybe his will be the next story.

Superb writing with “real” characters and far superior to the first book. Clay and Melody are in this book but in the background, and thats better as I didn't think they were enough for a whole book, but make great secondary people.

I'm converted now to this series, its much more of what I expected from Kele. It's joining my keepers file for re reading which means at £4.27 for 326 pages its decent value.

Stars: full five – great book despite the twee names : )
