Historical fiction. Written in form of a diary, which genre was so popular in the 18th century and which sounds so comprehensible in our time of blogging/webdiaries/webjournals. Time: 1764, a year after the Seven Years War (this first global military conflict took place much earlier than WWI, and it may be called the First World War, in fact.) Set in Europe, the story is h ...more

An Unorthodox Marriage

A Handful of Blossoms is a beautifully written, original and engaging work. The novel is not a standard romance book, although it contains significant reflection on the nature of love. It is also one of the most character driven and literary books that I have read in a long time.

It is written in the form of a diary, kept by Constance, a young European princess who in 1764, a year after the Seven Year’s War, has just joined in a dynastic marriage with a European

This is not a simple book. Masterly written, each word weighted with care, it’s in the form of the diary of Constance-Otilia-Alexandrine, Princess of Anhalt-Welf, who accepts a dynastic marriage with Constantine-Leopold, Prince of Askanier-Hortz. The diary last from May 20, 1764 to November 27, 1764, no long indeed, and it starts barely two weeks after the marriage. As often happened at the time, Constance didn’t really know her soon to be husband, he was a family acquaintance, but he had a titl ...more

This was a very difficult review to write. The reason being, this is one of the best pieces of writing I have read in a very long time. It was also unfortunately, not a very entertaining story for my personal tastes. And so I find myself in conflict. Do I rate the masterful literary skill or the pure entertainment value of the story?

After wrestling with this for some time I have decided to do both. I believe that both good writing and entertainment for the reader make up a truly good book. With

I'm struggling a lot trying to come up with what to say about this book, so I decided I should just start typing and see what comes out! This is not my type of book, so it is a bit difficult to review. This review will probably be shorter than my usual reviews.

The book is historical fiction in the form of a diary written by a young girl named Constance (shortened name). I found the story-telling through this narrator to be very well done and all of the characters had quite a bit of de

First and foremost, the plot of A Handful of Blossoms is absolutely original. Really, how many love stories with no romantic scenes or bed scenes or with pendent ending do you know? And yet, it’s a love story, since the main character dreams of love constantly and falls in love periodically. Next, it must be said that all the tales in the narration is a good contribution and source of the pagan culture of Central Europe and a piece of information for those who want to know more of the folklore.

Just finished reading "A Handful of Blossoms" last night, and wanted to tell how much I enjoyed the book. The time travel was really cool, and I liked the way Lara B developed the damsel’s character, reminiscence, writings, and the setting in the whole. I don't know what would be involved in scripting a story like this and adapting it to a form that might be the basis for a movie, but Lara B made an excellent candidate. Looking forward to Lara’s next historical fiction.

A Handful of Blossoms by Lara Biyuts. I give this book five stars. I don't like the cover and I don't read a lot of historical romance but this book is something more than the cover or the genre, something deeper, more complicated and interesting. The same complicated and deep are my feelings about this book. I know that I love the novella but it's hard to explain.

A unique story in time and place, and superbly written...
