This book disappointed me a bit. The characters especially let me down. We do not get to see the changes that these people go through, really. Instead, we just see that (boom!) they are different, like someone snapped their fingers and made it so. Moreover, Rose and Maggie are really stereotypes. One is the frumpy, hardworking, sheltered, smart sister. The other is the skinny, borderline promiscuous, self-involved, kind of dumb sister. And they are feuding. Big surprise. And what of Michael, Syd...more

Jennifer Weiner's strength is in her characterizations. She makes you want to get to know the people she describes, particularly the heroines of her novels. Her heroines are not perfect, physically, or emotionally, and so many of us can relate.
This time around, the heroines are Rose and Maggie Feller, two sisters who could not be more different. Rose is a lawyer, a size 14 with a neglible love life. Maggie is dyslexic and gorgeous, but lost in the world. The "shoes" in the title are ...more

Took a break from oh-so-serious but very high quality "Reading Lolita in Tehran" to zoom through a couple fluffy paperbacks I grabbed at the neighborhood thrift show. Am intrigued to see how different book is from movie (which, by the way, I loooooved.)

UPDATE: Finished reading this one pretty quickly; it's not exactly heavy lifting. Lots of differences from the movie, but I have to say I like the movie and the book for different reasons. The screenplay changes a lot, but keeps the...more

It's hard to believe that Rose and Maggie are sisters - it seems the only thing they have in common is their shoe size. Rose is the responsible sister; at age thirty, she's a lawyer at a successful firm, and she's finally found herself a good boyfriend. Maggie is twenty-eight; she is the attractive sister. Despite her looks, she has not held a job for very long at all. Flighty and irresponsible, she detests Rose's approach to life.

Unfortunately for the sisters, Maggie is forced to move in wi...more

i can't help it. i'm a sucker for chick lit. i found this at a book sale for $0.75, so even if it were awful, i would be down <$1 and i would have helped the contra costa county public library system. what the heck, right? so i read it. i laughed, i cried, i skimmed, i sighed, i squealed, i rolled my eyes. i used this as my breakfast accompaniment. during this book's tenure as my literary entertainment, i also baked a lemon-blueberry loaf cake and a walnut tart. if you've watched the ...more

Eh. I didn't really know if I should have given this two or three stars, but I finally settled on two. It's a good plane read, and so probably also a good beach/pool read, but not an anywhere else read. I got this on sale for a dollar, which was a good price to pay for it. It's not a full price book, but possibly maybe a half price.

I appreciate that the author juggled a large set of characters, but I would have appreciated her even more if the characters' changes had been more...realisti...more

Ok so I saw the movie first. This was one of those movies that after about 20 minutes of watching you want to turn it off b/c you can't think of any redeeming qualities in it but then oddly, you finish and it is great. One of the reasons it is so good is b/c the absolutely black, makes the white more white...you know? The book is the same way excecpt more trashy behavior and more redeeming qualities in the end. I know this review wouldn't make me want to read it, but I loved it. I love lear...more

Eh. So I like the writing style, but there were a lot of plotholes in this one. Where did Maggie's motivation to turn over a new leaf originate? Was it the poetry? What about the poetry? So the slime ball Rose is dating at the office is a sex addict? Okay... we only get like a paragraph to establish that and that was only to set the stage for what happens later. Nothing else about it. And, Rose isn't even dating him for real, which makes her character even more lame because she takes the...more

I was waiting for my friends at the movies when I discovered the nearby chapters had an extra 20% off sale for irewards members. I did not have a whole lot of money in the bank but I ended up going through the bargain bins and getting about 7 books for around $50. Overall it was a good day. In Her Shoes was one of the books I got. I have seen the movie several times and I really enjoy it. This was one of those movies where the film writers drew a significant amount of what makes up the film dire...more

Rose and Maggie are sisters and initially you think they couldn't be more different. Their mother died when they were about eight and six, and so Rose looked after Maggie for most of her childhood.

Maggie often takes advantage of Rose - and indeed everybody she meets - and Rose comes across as dependable, and a bit of a pushover. Slowly, and following a big row with Maggie, things start to change for them both. Maggie becomes more responsible, and Rose learns to take risks. They both meet...more

I thought this book was just okay. My biggest problem is I couldn't get over how much Maggie got on my nerves. Yes, I know she had issues with her learning disability and her mother dying, but that can't be an excuse for everything. She gave away her sister's Nine West boots to some girl she didn't even know at an audition!!! That's practically blasphemous, borderline crazy behavior. As a sister, I would never do that! Oh yeah and she also left with her sister's boyfriend. Also, something ...more

Jennifer Weiner can write funny passages. There's the 80-something woman who uses her new computer to print fake parking permits. The fussy pug that prefers more elegant surroundings. Maggie's attempt to get into the MTV VJ auditions. I did grin a few times while reading this book.

But glimmers of situational humor aren't enough to overcome the bigger problems with this novel. It's formulaic, even for chick lit. Two sisters don't get along - one's chubby and bookish, the other a wild p...more

I loved this book! It's very long but a quick read. She does a fantastic job of breaking up the book; some chapters are only 3-4 pages long.

I loved how the author told the story from different people's perspectives. It gave me a better sense and feeling of the entire situation and what each person was thinking which in turn helped show you why they did what they did.

This book made me smile, be sad and feel what the characters were feeling.

Sometimes when I'm reading other books tha...more

Maggie & Rose
2 saudara yang sangat bertolak belakang
Maggie dengan kegemarannya berfoya2 sedang Rose gila kerja
aq suka baik buku maupun filmnya
Maggie & Rose saling bergantung saat beranjak dewasa
mereka bukan hanya sekedar adik kakak tapi juga sahabat
mereka saling bercerita mengenai kehidupan masing2

saat membaca novel & liat film ini separuh babak pertama aq benci banget dengan tingkah laku maggie yg hanya membawa kesulitan bagi kakaknya
maggie seperti tidak punya rasa...more

I love Jennifer Weiner. I just got another copy of her book Goodnight Nobody which I lost in the middle of reading last summer and my sister gave me Little Earthquakes to read and it was all I could do not to read three of her books in a row. She's got such a great writing style that pulls you in and keeps you interested. I know I'll always win with a Jennifer Weiner book.

And In Her Shoes was no different. I haven't seen the movie yet so I wasn't biased by any big-sc...more

i saw the movie before i read the book so most of it was spoiled for me. only a few parts were omitted and those were the best parts to read; the movie stays true to the book. i've read two novels by jennifer weiner and didn't want to put either of them down. her prose flows very smoothly and draws you into the characters' thoughts. there is no omnipotent narrator but the 1st person point of view that she provides from the main characters gives the reader information that the different characte...more

I like Jennifer Weiner. I like her solid writing and the way she develops her characters. I appreciate that she handles dialog well and that she carefully paints a picture for the reader.

That being said, this book is not great literature. Some have called this book "formulaic", "predictable", "chick lit"... it is all of those things. I guess I was hoping for more. I am giving it 3 stars since Weiner's skill allows the reader to just relax and enjoy a story, unfe...more

I saw the movie before reading this book. My mother passed it onto me and as my more intellectual book that I was starting to read didn't seem to grab my attention in the 10 minutes I had each day, I decided to read a more lazy book.
It's not a horrible book, but it is not something I would seek out to read. It has a sappy ending which produced a few sniffles, and it has characters that eventually became their own (different from Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz), but overall, I would say the be...more

this was another one where i wanted to see the movie, but wanted to read the book first. after i stopped reading Bringing Down The House yesterday, i picked this one up to start. within the first couple pages, i had to close it. if the story was going to start out the way it was, i didn't need to read more. skimmed through a bit to see if i could just skip to a certain point, and noticed some language, too. (why do people insist on the use of that certain word so freely) oh well, at least i...more

I picked this up on a whim. I enjoyed the movie and thought I might like the book as well (having friends who have enjoyed it.) Great vacation read. If you are attached to the way the plot goes in the movie then you probably shouldn't read the book. However, I enjoyed the differences between the two and enjoyed seeing that they were able to make the same things happen even when they used different circumstances to get there. The book allows you to care about both Ella, Maggie and Rose and, ...more
