This is the second book I have read by Sophie Mason in the last couple of months. I love her work. This one is a fairytale and is based on the story of Cinderella without the fairy godmother and an interesting take on magic.

Selena is told by her dying mother that she is a Moon Sister, but needs to keep this fact a secret as Moon Sisters practised magic and magic has been banned in her country. Selena does not know any other Moon Sisters as most of the women have been killed by the Mancers, a po...more

I think this book had a lot of potential to be a really good Cinderella adaptation. The first half of the book was promising, but as the story progressed the plot became more convoluted and unrealistic. Half of the time I wasn't sure what was happening. A major plot development is when Selena realises she has to kill the crown prince. You would she would spend a little time, I don't know, finding out how to kill the price without getting caught. But instead, she goes shopping. I kid you not. I d...more

This is a reversioning of the Cinderella story. Selena’s father is a wealthy nobleman who lives in a provincial city called Ashberg. When his wife dies and he remarries, his new wife persuades him to annul his marriage and so Selena is banished below stairs because she is now not a legally recognised daughter. (pg 2.)

In this story magic is banned in this land and there is a group of people called The Mancers who are very sinister and powerful and who seek out any magic.

Selena is a Moon-sister, o...more

This is definitely a book to put in the 'fantasy romances for teen girls that are vastly superior to Twilight' category. Masson takes the basics of the Cinderella story, but Selena, whose mother has died, whose father has remarried, who is mistreated by her stepmother and stepsisters, and who has magical help, gets to the ball and meets the prince in the first third of the book. The story then continues, with Selena learning to use her forbidden magical inheritance, and ultimately being part of...more

Moonlight and Ashes is a different take on Cinderella. Selena has become the servant of her stepmother and stepsisters. Her father is too weak minded or doesn't care enough to do anything about it. So when Selena gets a chance to go to the ball and meet the prince she takes it but things don't turn out quite the way they do in fairytales...

I was enjoying the first half of the novel, with a few exceptions but the second half I was less then impressed with. I'm not sure what the author was trying...more

I have given it 4 stars... I am as shocked as the rest of you! I originally saw this at the bookstore and didn't buy it cause I am not a fan of Cinderella stories. I ended up getting it from the library cause I was entrigued enough to have a go at it. As I began reading, I was still very 'yes, yes it's cinderella" but I was still interested enough to keep going. Not even 100 pages in, the similarity to Cinderella ends and the story just takes off! Now please don't think that you have suffer thro...more

This story is a take on the Cinderella fairy tale. I really enjoyed the set up with the main character, and the development of the society she lives in, with the control of magic, and her being a forbidden moon sister. However halfway through, it suddenly feels as if the author needed to quickly finish the book, and everything is rushed, with barely any explanation. I would have enjoyed the story more, if the second half could have been as well developed as the first.

This book had a lot of potential.
The start was promising but the only things the same with Cinderella was the evil step-mother and sisters, the fact that she was a servant and the big ball with the dreamy prince that she went to. From here though I'm sorry to say the story becomes a bit confusing and unrealistic. Don't let me put you off though give it a try and you might enjoy it!

I really loved this new book by Sophie Masson. I think it's her best boook yet, and I'm a long-time fan of her work. 'Moonlight & Ashes' is a retelling of the Aschenputtel fairy tale, the German Cinderella. It is set in alternative Prague, and is full of adventure, magic and romance. It has the most beautiful, dreamy cover too - loved it!

I thought this was quite amazing! I enjoyed it very much, and it IS a kind of Cinderella story that I have never heard of before. Although, the way that the couple in the story spoke, irked me a little bit. As if it was a bit melo-dramatic. Then, again., that may be due to the fact that I'm a teenager. Who knows? Other than that, the novel is an amazing read. :D

Quite enjoyable mix of traditional fairy tale and plenty of magic. An independent and strong willed heroine (Ashes instead of Cinders)who won't let adversity ruin her life. Manipulative relations and plotting princes keep the book interesting.

This book promised a different take on the traditional fairy tale and it certainly delivered. My full review will be in Viewpoint soon however I definitely recommend checking this one out.

If you can get through the opening, which is uninteresting and feels as if the Author is still getting used to First Person POV, then you will find the plot gets more interesting and it make for an enjoyable light read.

This was a very interesting book, it is a twist on the traditional Cinderella with some serious girl power.

Enchanting! I only put it down when I had to go to work and don't think I didn't resent it!

I just couldn't love this character and maybe it is because it is told in first person and the character comes across as being arrogant. This ia an ok read.

a nice twist on the Cinderella story

Enjoyable and quite refreshingly original historical fantasy, with a Cinderella bent. Insta-love element really lessened the impact for me, though.

It was an awesome version of Cinderella. I honestly didn't know how everything will end even if we've heard the story of Cinderella heaps of times but Sophie did twist everything in an interesting way. Is so imaginative!
