Creighton Northgate is a man shrouded in mystery and on the run from a past he doesn't even fully understand. Blurring the lines between vagabond, enigma, drunkard, and savior, he spends his days staring into the southern legends and paranormal events that most only speak of in hushed, half-believing whispers.

In the midst of a sweltering southern day, he attempts to help a...more

Crate Northgate goes where the work is. He's no stranger to open roads, with exits leading to places that are no more than a fast food joint, a gas station, and a motel. The Vagrant, by Bryan Hall, opens with Crate Northgate stopping at one such crossroad. He needs something to fend of the headaches that plague him, and anything besides wine will do. The plan is to get the beer and hit the road, but the homeless man haunted by a ghost derails that plan.

Hall slowly unfurls the revelations in this...more

Creighton "Crate" Northgate has been seeing ghosts for some time. He moves around a lot, helping folks with their ghost problems, although Crate hints that there's more to it than that.

The Vagrant is a perfect introduction to the "Southern Hauntings Saga" series from Angelic Knight Press.

In this story, Crate stops for fuel and beer, and sees two men outside the store. Bryan Hall does an excellent job describing there characters, "One, a vagrant...[his] left shoe had the toe blown out of it and a...more

Review of The Vagrant (The Southern Hauntings Saga #1) by Bryan Hall
Published by Angelic Knight Publishing

“The Vagrant” is a winner undoubtedly, a thought-provoking novelette that introduces author Bryan Hall’s “The Southern Hauntings Saga” with a rip-roaring initial entry. This story carries a depth of philosophical content not always available in a ghost story-and of course, is both more and less as well as beyond, a simple story of haunting. Questions such as: what constitutes victimization?...more

Having enjoyed Bryan Hall’s short story collection Whispers from the Dark, I was looking forward to reading The Vagrant, the introductory novelette to his Southern Hauntings Saga. I wasn’t disappointed. Steeped in the Southern Gothic tradition, Hall’s haunting story, use of subtle horror, and flowing writing style introduces readers to the protagonist of the series, Creighton “Crate” Northgate, and leaves them wanting more.

Crate Northgate is a flawed character who turns to drinking to cope with...more

Bryan Hall's The Vagrant is an exceptionally well-written supernatural tale set in the dusty, gritty South. Sweat-stained and turned inside-out like a sopping wet workshirt, Hall's small town gothic tale of rage and illicit romance is a fine example of the ghost story tradition.

To be honest, I didn't expect it to wow me, but I found myself captivated by this story of revenge, murder, and torturous hauntings. I'm looking forward to the next installment of Southern Hauntings, which I found to be...more

Secrets of the Ether All Mankind is Born From

The title of this review comes from a rather beautiful line from this novelette. I had high expectations from this story as I have read some of Hall's previous work before and I was not disappointed by far.

As usual Bryan sketches out the literary equivalent of black and gray shades creating an exquisitely layered sense of unnerving darkness. His characters rule the stage in this story, showing rich complexity in their behavior and interactions. I'm de...more

The Vagrant is a supernatural fiction story about Creighton “Crate” Northgate. Crate can see the spirits of those who have passed and helps people who are being tormented by them.
He comes across a homeless man outside of a gas station. Next to the man, is a well-dressed man. Crate finds out that the well-dressed man is a spirit haunting Ed, the homeless man.
The Vagrant was an. . .interesting read. It was a short story, only 26 pages. I felt like it could have been more developed and made into...more

Who is Crate Northgate? That is the question I've seen floating around the internet lately, part of the promotion for Bryan Hall's new novelette, The Vagrant (Southern Hauntings Saga) . It is the first in The Southern Haunting Saga that introduces Creighton Northgate, a man who is running from a haunted past...literally, because Crate Northgate has an unusual gift; he can see ghosts. Now some of you might think this would be an amazing gift to see, but see enough ghosts and enough of the wrong k...more

In the Vagrant we are introduces to Crates character a bit and get a better insight for future books as to who he is and his background. At first I didn't quite like Crate's character, but as the book story developed more I began to find an interest in his background and what he has to handle, with seeing dead people.....Though this is a short novelette it served as a great introduction to the Southern Haunting Saga.

At first my impression was, wow this is really short, but the length can be dece...more

This was a gem of a story. This is the first work I have read by Bryan Hall, and I was not disappointed. The Vagrant follows Crate Northgate, a man who sees ghosts. Imagine his surprise when he meets a homeless man named Ed who also sees ghosts.

What I enjoyed most about this story was the character of Crate Northgate. Here is a man haunted by his past, his dead brother, and the spirits he sees in everyday life. Bryan Hall does a fantastic job with character development. Though little is told abo...more

I discovered Bryan Hall through one of my favorite small presses...he has a style that I enjoy and vowed to keep an eye on. "The Vagrant" is the kickoff to his Southern Haunting series. If this is any indication...I will be setting aside some quality time for Mr. Hall.

While this is only a short story intended to introduce the reader to the central protagonist, Crate, there is the depth I now expect from this author. Don't expect it to be a quick and casual read. There is a great deal taking plac...more

This is a novelette by author Bryan Hall. Crate Northgate is a man with a troubled past who possesses the ability to see ghosts . He wants to help a homeless man tormented by the spirit of a dead judge that holds animosity towards the man. This story kept me glued to the pages to find out why this spitit was haunting this man. Wow was i shocked to find out the reason. Great work Mr. Hall, and keep them coming

Crate is an interesting man - he sees things most cannot. Namely ghosts. Haunted by his own past, he helps others to cross over. Then he meets Ed and discovers that even in his world, things are not always as they appear on the surface.

Great read!
