Some people are really going to like Prophecy Girl. People who like a very distinctive protagonist voice littered with pop culture references. This is the first book that I have read by Cecily White and I am sure that it won't be my last. When I started reading Prophecy Girl the first thought that came to mind was the TV shows Charmed and Supernatural. Awesome debut! Here's the (slightly) more detailed review I promised.

I have to admit, I'm not a huge reader of YA books and I know the author personally (full disclosure). I'm also not crazy about the title of this book (reminds me of a Marvel comic superhero or something), but it does tell you what it's about, so I suppose it works.

Imagine the local high school, full of teens and teachers, but they are Guardians, or really Guardians in training, and protect anyone with a soul from demons. Upon graduation they are paired together - bonded - to kill demons. Usually those bonded end up falling in love as well - so bonding is sort of a really big deal. LOVED LOVED LOVED it! Amelie and I would have been friends in high school. She's hilarious and such a sweet person. The plot is amazing and keep me totally engrossed, I didn't want to stop reading. I hated that the book ended (Not the ending) just that it was over. Can't wait fot the next book in this series. I can only imagine what kind of trouble Amelie will get into to. In fact picturing her learning "proper" manners of her new station has me giggling already.

When I first saw the synopsis of Cecily White’s Prophecy Girl, I got excited about reading the book because it reminded me a little of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy and Jennifer Armentrout’s Covenant series, two of my favourite series. The worldbuilding wasn’t fully fleshed out, the plot ended up thoroughly confusing me, the characters were hard to care about, and the ro...more When I first saw the synopsis of Cecily White’s Prophecy Girl, I got excited about reading the book because it reminded me a little of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy and Jennifer Armentrout’s Covenant series, two of my favourite series. Unfortunately, after reading Prophecy Girl, I can say that it is nowhere as well written as the previously mentioned series. The worldbuilding wasn’t fully fleshed out, the plot ended up thoroughly confusing me, the characters were hard to care about, and the romance wasn’t at all what I was expecting it to be.

Let’s start with the worldbuilding. When we first meet Amelie, she’s out demon hunting with her friend Lisa. Considering she’s a Guardian, I figured we’d eventually learn all about the different types of demons in her world – kind of like with Jana Oliver’s The Demon Trappers. Instead, the demons in Prophecy Girl appear to be mere distractions that crop up once in a while to supposedly show off how badass Amelie is. Another thing, for example, that was hardly touched upon in Prophecy Girl was the angel bloodline. It appears that a Guardian’s bloodline isn’t based on genetics, but we aren't told what it’s based upon nor is there a clear reason as to why it couldn’t have been based on genetics. We’re also not given much information about the benefits or drawbacks of having one bloodline as opposed to another.

Initially, the focus in Prophecy Girl was on why Amelie’s instructors at school were dying. Later on though, the original conspiracy turns out to be part of a greater plot to cause problems with other Crossworlders – namely, vampires and werewolves. By the end, I had no idea how White made everything tie together as I was just waiting for the book to be over.* I did however accurately predict who the villains would be.

In terms of the characterization, I found most of the secondary characters – Luc was an exception – to be unmemorable. Meanwhile, I thought Jack lacked complexity – oh, and he wasn’t Amelie’s trainer; thanks a lot misleading synopsis! – and disliked how Amelie became more and more special over time, especially since she was so foolhardy.

Although I disliked Amelie and Jack as individuals, they were even worse as a couple because Amelie kept throwing herself at him and he kept giving her mixed signals. As well, the romance was a total insta-love situation despite the author trying to make it appear not as such.

All in all, an incredibly frustrating read!

There was a mystical power once called a good pacing. Unfortunately this power wasn't spectacular, and stands usually in the shadow of powers of action and humour and forbidden romance. That's why it gets so often forgotten and only the greatest masters of written world can get a hold of it. Unfortunately, Mrs. White hadn't reached this level yet.

Amelie is more teenage-like than a lot of the leading YA characters that I've read, but not in a bad way. She's still strong and likable, though a little bratty at times. She just talks and reacts more like a teenager than an adult. I always find it odd how YA heroines usually fall on one end of the maturity spectrum. They can either appear to be way too child-like or way too grown-up. Amelie falls right in the middle and this makes her a very believable character. Also, she grows and grows up throughout the course of the novel, but it's clear that she still has more growing to do before she's reached her full potential. Overall, I liked her, and I enjoyed what White did with her character.

Since Prophecy Girl starts out with the prologue, which is the ending, I went into the novel expecting to meet Jack. I didn't expect what I got when I finally did get to meet him though. Jackson isn't your typical YA hero either. He really stands out, and I couldn't help but grow attached to him. He's a little snarky, but he's not a jerk. He does some jerky things, but it's clear that he's not doing them to be mean (you'll have to read the book to understand what I'm talking about here). He's also brave, loyal, and open-minded. He's one of the most complex and realistic male leads I've read in awhile. He's nowhere near perfect, and I loved him for that. The secondary characters are well-developed, too, and came across very realistically.

The plot is well-paced, intense, and emotional. While this novel isn't completely action-packed, it is suspenseful. White managed to keep me guessing throughout most of the book, and even when I managed to figure out one part of the mystery, she still threw me for a loop or two at the end. There appears to be some insta-love between Jack and Amelie, but as the story progresses, and as more of the world-building occurs and you begin to understand more about the bonding between Guardian and Watcher, it becomes clear that there is more to them than that. Also, Amelie doesn't get all "Bella Swan" about Jack, so even if it had been insta-love, it wouldn't have been annoying. What I'm saying is for those of you who hate insta-love, give this book a chance to explain. You'll be pleasantly surprised in the end. And speaking of the ending, it's not a cliffhanger and a lot of the issues introduced are cleared up, but there White left plenty of small unanswered questions and introduced some new ones for the sequel. I can't wait to see what happens.

Overall, I'd recommend this book and this series to anyone who enjoys good YA Paranormal Romance. This is one book you won't want to miss. White is an excellent writer, and there is enough mystery and intrigue to keep everyone interested. If you give Prophecy Girl a try, you won't be sorry. (less)

This book has officially made my top five favorite book list of 2013. I haven’t been this excited to write a review in so long, but I never wanted this story to end and I already miss these characters.

Prophecy Girl follows Amelie, a young demon slayer who seems to always be getting herself into trouble. In the start of a new school year the school has become a dangerous place after the disappearance of instructors. Strangely enough a mysterious new trainer has come to take over for the missing teachers and Amelie immediately feels a strange connection to him. Unfortunately for Amelie and him they have a prophecy that they can’t escape and now must fight to find the truth about Amelie’s destiny and stay alive.

Amelie is the type of girl I could easily be friends with, her character was so easy to connect to. Her sarcastic personality, getting herself in constant trouble and seriously devoted to protecting her loved ones makes her one heck of a great character. She’s extremely strong and doesn’t know much about controlling her abilities as a guardian, she pretty much calls chaos to herself without knowing. Amelie is like a puzzle for the readers, there is a lot about her that is kept secret from her by the people she’s closest too. I was able to put some pieces together quite fast, but I had know idea what the ultimate fate of the characters were going to be. In the end I was super shocked and actually quite excited about what came to be.

Jackson is my new book crush; this guy frustrated me to no end at the beginning. I just couldn’t understand why he was trying to be so mean to Amelie when clearly he could just tell her what was really going on. Overall I think it would have been better to tell the poor girl everything from the beginning, but what would be the fun in that, eh? He’s the ultimate bad boy who can’t seem to resist her and keeps protecting her, even though he makes her angry every time. I loved their chemistry, with a little love hate and fantastic scenes of bickering and sarcasm.

Overall I adored Prophecy Girl, the story was a mix of demons, angels, magic and insane twist that I was wishing it never ended. The secondary characters are extremely important to both Jack and Amelie, as much of their decisions involve them. I don’t’ want to give away much more than that. There are a lot of battle scenes and interesting historical tidbits dealing with the angels Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer that tie in to all the mystery behind Amelie’s character. Then there are the villains, I felt were not scary evil but more they were either crazy or some just didn’t understand what was really going on. There such an interesting backstory with the villains that were cleverly twisted into the whole mystery.

This is a fast paced book that had me finishing it in one sitting. The ending is a slight cliffhanger but not one that has the reader pulling their hair out, thank goodness because I don’t like those. There is so much to look forward too and I can’t wait to see what challenges are to come for Amelie.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a Young Adult novel that you should add to you must read this asap! Fans of the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep and the Covenant series by Jennifer Armentrout will absolutely love Prophecy Girl by Cecily White

While following in the footsteps of some very popular authors, this book, told in the first person, brings something a little bit different. It is packed with potential, with its book description promising originality and entertainment. I was pretty excited to read it, but a part of me didn’t love it. I felt like there were a few things that fell short of my reading expectations.

This story was very fast paced and has numerous twists and turns with a bit of mystery, action and romance.

Our main character is Amelie, who is a demon slayer. She's also a bit clumsy. Strange thing starts to happen around her school, and there's also a new mysterious guy, Jack. (Who guessed...?)
Pretty soon, she is the one suspected to be the murderer. She has five days to find out who is killing the angelbloods. Partnered with Jack she is set to find out the whole truth.

Ami was a kickass, witty, sarcastic character. Sometimes a bit annoying.
Jack was a bit bad boyish, mean, but also a likeable character.

What I really enjoyed, is the humor. I laughed so much.

"Okay. I know what you’re thinking. Angels don’t exist.
Flawless skin, perfect hair, flowing white robes, all topped off with an adorable set of fluffy pink wings. Yeah. If you see that wandering around, you’ve probably stumbled onto the set of a Victoria’s Secret catalog shoot. Prepare to get your butt kicked by security."

There were a few mental images I never thought I’d have to deal with, and chief among them was the crazy-hot vampire being deflowered in the backseat of an Italian sports car.

Overall, I liked this book. I guess I'll read the next one too, if only to know how the story will end.(less)

I have to say, form the minute I picked up Prophecy Girl I was hooked. I mean how can you not like a book that has demons, magic, angels, vampires and a ton of awesomeness? Because that's what this book has.

And in all that awesomeness you have wonderful characters like Amelie, who is tough as nails, doesn't know how to follow a rule to save her life and always seems to find trouble. Pretty sure up to the point of the disappearing instructors every incident at the school could be credited to her. And I love it! She is not your perfect lead character. She has flaws....gasp, imagine that, and that just made me love her that much more. She tries to do right, sometimes, but things just never seem to go her way. It's like she is an accident waiting to happen, and then there is the whole being accused of murder. I think Cecily White did a great job making Amelie completely likable and releatable.

Really Cecily White did a great job making all of her characters likable. She had you completely falling in love with the "bad" person before you even knew what hit you. One minute you are all in love with them and then next....BAM! You are hit with a 2x4 and you realize that the character you love isn't so good. And that moment causes you to go over every detail in the book as you look for any hint or clue that you might have missed. And sure enough, Cecily White leaves you small bread crumbs here and there, but they are so minute that as you get wrapped up in the story you forget to analyze everything. And that is just one of the many reasons Prophecy Girl was so good!

Not only do you fall in love with the bad person before you realize they are truly bad, but Cecily White has you questioning all the good guys too. There were times I wasn't sure who to trust! I loved the world that Cecily White built for this series. It is one that is completely believable and is vaguely reminiscent of Hogwarts....only with demon slayers!

Prophecy Girl really does have it all....demons, magic, angels, action, suspense, mystery, comedy, and even some love. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for that next great escape, because I guarantee you that once you pick up this book you won't want to put it down. But you must be prepared to be blindsided because there is no way that you see everything coming!

When Jackson Smith-Hailey is sent to replace one of her newly dead teachers, Amelie feels an instant connection with him and he seems to amplify her powers to unbelievable heights. When the school is attacked during an assembly, Amelie is blamed and thought to be evil. So of course her and Jack go on the run to avoid execution and must also prove who the real killer is before a prophecy that says she's going to kill Jack is fulfilled! All while trying to make sure the peace tenets actually get signed and a war doesn't erupt between the vampire/werewolf races and the Guardians. Can they manage to save the world and will both of them survive the effort?
In general, I am sick of reading the same old paranormal schtick time and time again. So going into this one I was really hesitant, especially when I read the term 'Watcher,' which has me harking back to the days of my Buffy the Vampire Slayer obsession. I was pleasantly surprised with the world-building and was particularly glad to not hate it based on its inability to focus on anything but the angel aspect, which I've noticed seems to be a trend in angel-based YA books a lot of times. There was a coherent plot, and yes the different angel bloodlines and the calling to fight demons were an enormous part of the plot. But it was more focused on characters and character development then overcomplicated plots/details that make a reader feel lost, like they're missing some important back story or something. I loved the snarkiness of Amelie and felt like she really came across as a teenager (which she was) instead of some weird adult/teen hybrid, which comes with the territory sometimes. It's like the authors forget that teens aren't super wise, smart, etc. all the time. Sometimes they do dumb things, act like brats, or make you have WTF moments. Amelia had all of those qualities, but also had a gigantic heart and wonderful sense of loyalty that made me want to hug her. The relationship with Jackson was cute and although in most cases I don't like insta-love, I don't think this really even qualifies as it. For the simple fact that Amelie is drawn to him (i.e. attracted to him) and he feels familiar to her in a slightly nagging way. She doesn't even use the word love until over midway through the book, almost near the end. The banter, arguments and fuzzy moments made me smile.
The inclusion of the werewolf and vampire races in side-character capacities was interesting and allowed for an important part of the plot involving peace tenets to unfold smoothly and make sense. But they were by no means main characters (at least till Vampire Luc became mega important at the end of the book) and didn't become annoying, or detract from the main plot. The twist about Amelie's surprise sibling was very movie of the week and not at all shocking. I thought the revelation of who it actually was happened to be really odd and didn't fit too great with the direction the action took near the final battle. It seemed to me just a convenient plot twist. I really wanted it to be someone she'd never met, but alas I wasn't so lucky. Which sucked because I really liked that character until the truth was revealed! The likeability of the characters, the witty dialogue and the overall humor of the book were definitely my favorite points. With the huge twisting cliffhanger at the end I'm intrigued to see how the author spins things in the next book. Overall a fast paced, funny paranormal read with a lot of heart that I would recommend to fans of Obsidian by: Jennifer Armentrout, The Percy Jackson Series by: Rick Riordan, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Amelie is a strong kick-butt heroine; she was independent, determined, had a quirky sense of humour and didn’t really care for the rules; she was a character I really enjoyed getting to know. When we first meet her at the beginning of the book her biggest concern seemed to be bonding with a Watcher by graduation but she comes to realise this may be the least of her worries.

I was really intrigued by the world Cecily White created, the plot was fast-paced and filled with fascinating characters and detailed explanations about the Guardians, Demons and Crossworlders. The murder/mystery plot was written well and seeing Amelie having to work alongside the smexy new trainer, Jackson ’Jack’ Smith-Hailey in order to clear her name was quite exciting to read about, I was eager to see how it would all unfold.

The love interest is unattainable Jack who often ran hot and cold, their intense chemistry was off the charts but he acted indifferent which drove me crazy but there was a reason as to why. I loved the squabbling that went on between this couple, it was classic! There were a few revelations that we came to learn about Jack that I found quite interesting and it definitely explained Ami’s insta-love attraction to this broody boy.

I enjoyed reading about each of the secondary characters; I was utterly shocked by the reveal of one of the villains! I really liked getting to know this person before it was shown who they were, I was completely blindsided. I enjoyed the banter between Amelie and best friend Lisa and Jack’s Vampire friend Lucas was really entertaining.

Books which take place in schools and academies (Vampire Academy, Covenant, Hex Hall etc.) are usually huge hits for me and Prophecy Girl was no exception and quite comparable to these series; I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the prophecy surrounding Amelie which stated she was destined to bring down the whole race of Angelbloods, it was a gripping storyline I was quite eager to see play out.

What I didn’t like: Without giving away spoilers, I’m not sure if I am completely comfortable with the way the plot weaved at the end, huge changes are to come for Ami and I’m not sure I quite like what has happened to her and the close proximity she will be sharing with a certain someone. I am curious to see what the author has in store for us.

Overall, Prophecy Girl is a great start to this wonderful new series, there is action aplenty, humour, ongoing drama and a really sweet romance.

Loved this book! I was a little wary of Prophecy Girl because I've had string of bad angel and boarding school books and I was worried that this would be the same. But, fortunately, this book was so much better and I adored it.

And when I found out why he had been acting so mean in the beginning, it was all forgiven. He definitely had a legitimate reason to try to push Amelie away, considering what he knew. But even with that knowledge hanging over his head, he was just amazing.

The romance between Amelie and Jack was brilliantly done. Throughout the book, these two were a lovely couple. The romance built up quickly, but it wasn't insta-love. And when it says there was a deep bond between them, that's not just a cheesy remark. There really was. For reasons that aren't revealed until later in the book. Let's just say that there is history between them. But, I digress. I really liked Amelie and Jack together. There are rumors of a love triangle in book 2 that have me quaking in my boots because I want Amelie and Jack to have a happy ending. We'll see what happens...

The plot was excellent. It was a roller coaster of thrills, surprises, and unpredictability. I was hooked from page one, all the way through. The twists in this book had my jaw dropping. And the ending was a game changer for all the characters. Now, I'm so anxious to get my hands on the next book. I need to find out what happens next!

YA lovers, you have to read Prophecy Girl! It was a fantastic, amazing, brilliant, wonderful, totally freaking awesome book.

Wow, siting here with one big cheesy smile on my face, I've got that lovely blissful feeling I rarely get after reading something totally awesome. Prophecy Girl isn't the best book I've read this year but definitely one of the most I've enjoyed.

Amelia is so freaking amazing!! She has it all going on. Powers, funny, tough and not afraid to get right in the middle of things when they get rough. Her life hasn't been perfect but she doesn't let it get her down. Even when it seems like everyone is against her she takes it in stride and she sure isn't afraid to let it be known what she thinks of the other paranormal creatures. Jackson is a double side of yummyness!! Strong, good looking, can be funny at times, smart and so much more. I see a lot of people falling in love with him when they read this. He should be afraid at times but he doesn't let it slow him down. He does what he thinks is right. I so fell for him.

It is hard to put into words just how much I enjoyed this book. It is has a different twist on the paranormal world with new things. The writing is very awesome and draws you right in. From the start you get to see just what type of girl Amelia is and as the book progresses you get to see so much more. There is plenty of action as she runs for her life or they are all battling demons. You also get the sparks between Amelia and Jack. They are enough to light up the pages they are on. There is plenty of other characters to get to know and enjoy. There is also plenty of twist and turns many I didn't see coming and was shocked by them. No spoilers from me but seriously read this book!! You won't regret it if you love paranormal YA books. I can not wait to see what happens next.

Prophecy Girl is the first book in the new Angel Academy series by Cecily White. It's about a teenage girl named Amelie, who is a demon slayer. This book has so much going on from the beginning. The instructors at the academy are being murdered, and the school is under attack. A hot, new trainer shows up at the school to temporarily help out. His name is Jack, and he runs into Amelie right away. Her mischievous reputation precedes her. He's heard all about her, and tries to stay away. In fact, it seems as though he can't stand her. Amelie feels a connection to him though, and won't leave him alone.

The story is told from Amelie's point of view. To be honest, she's a little on the annoying side. She just can't take a hint. However, Amelie's “voice” telling the story provides a lot of entertainment. She is sarcastic, witty and comical.

All of a sudden Amelie is being accused for the murders that have been happening, and Jack rescues her. They are on the run from those who want Amelie dead. She has a lot of powers, so they think she is too dangerous. That, and the fact that there is a supposed prophecy about her doesn't help matters any. For someone who seems to not like Amelie, Jack is always by her side protecting her. They have a steamy relationship that blossoms, but it's back and forth – cold, then hot. Jack seems a bit bi-polar on the issue.

So many secrets from so many people are being kept from Amelie throughout the book. It would be a miracle if she could trust anybody again. She is being kept in the dark about everything. Some things I saw coming, but some twists at the end caught me totally by surprise. Overall, this is a good book. I liked the writing style, there were times that I just had trouble getting into it. There were steamy moments, but nothing that went too far. It's good for young adult readers, and anyone who likes the young adult paranormal romance genre. If you are a fan of the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, you should definitely check out this book.(less)

Disclosure: Cecily is a friend of mine, which is what induced me to read a genre that I don't tend to get into that much. That said, I am a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and this book, especially early on, had that Buffy vibe: a witty, sarcastic protagonist with a seemingly doomed love, who is fated to fight the evils of the world.
