Josh Lyons is doing what he loves -- proving what happens in Vegas doesn't stay in Vegas. Josh heads a small detective agency that documents the indiscretions of unfaithful spouses for use in divorce and custody proceedings.
During a routine job, Josh rescues a young Asian girl from a prostitution ring and gives the girl to a friend of his on Metro's Vice Squad. When he hears a contract has been put out on the girl and someone in Metro is involved, he steals her from the "safe" house and hides her from the people who want to kill her.
Accused of being a kidnapper and child molester, Josh is pursued by the cops, the mob, and the media. Friends who will help him are hard to find and difficult to keep alive. The girl wants to get back to her pimp. His computer guy is not into violence. And the ex-missionary who speaks the girl's language doesn't approve of Josh's lifestyle.
Josh doesn't know who he can trust but when his office is blown up, he realizes he's going to have to take down some rich and powerful people if there's any hope for them to survive.
Las Vegas - where anything can and will happen. Especially if bored a businessman is looking for a bit fun away from home. And for the suspecting wives, Josh Lyons, P.I. is the man for the job.
Together with his tech guy Caleb and business manager Ruth, they carry out surveillance on those cheating husbands. But, what should have been an easy, caught-on-camera job turns into a lot more when the the hooker that turns up to massage the philanderer is a child barely in her teens.
Taking care of her pimp, Josh believes he is rescuing the young Karen (not Thai) girl from a degrading life. But Jaidee is brainwashed; she sees her pimp, Jackson, as family. Putting her into a home for abused children, the private investigator wonders how she got embroiled in the sordid world of prostitution. But Jaidee is a fighter, she won't back down from helping the two girls she considers to also be family. As Lyons Investigations head down the unsavory road of child sex trafficking, who will they come up against? Is someone on the police being paid to look the other way? Could the mob be involved and how will they take down the head honcho of this particular operation?
From the very beginning, you will be hooked. Morey has written a complex and harrowing story that has moments of tenderness and humor. Josh Lyons could have been written as a disgruntled PI but the author has created a kind, caring and hard working family man who's faith is a little shaky but who knows right from wrong. The motley crew that is his team add a level of banter that eases some of the tension and the author has tastefully treated a distressing subject. The other side to the 'lucrative' business is depicted so you know who the bad guys are - almost. In dealings with this seedy underground world who can you trust?
Hooked from the start, I actually stopped reading another novel to finish this one. Morey has created a tense, dramatic story on the streets of Las Vegas few (are lucky not to) see. The characters are well defined, with excellent personalities. Although I found Jaidee a little annoying (testament of a good writer when he can create such emotions) I had to remind myself she's a victim of circumstance. She's defensive, yet still innocent and at times funny. At its core, it's a book about what defines a family - be it the mob or a group of unrelated people working for an investigative business, families stick together through thick or thin. With intense moments, twist after twist and a surprising ending, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this Lyons mystery and can't wait to read more in the series. A highly recommended read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. The opinions expressed are my own and I am not required to give a positive review.
Others have the synopsis covered, so I won't. I'll just say that this book was really, really good.
Josh (main character) was very likeable. I don't know why, but part way through the book, I became aware of hearing Nathan Fillion's voice when Josh spoke. If this is made into a movie--and I think it would make a great one, Fillion must be cast as Josh. I digress.
Morey's writing style is excellent. Not understated, but not over the top, either. The characters are very well developed; I had no problem empathizing with their plight.
The book did deliver some tidbits on child-sex-trafficking,but it wasn't preachy. It just rolled, on and on. It's not a short read, yet I was surprised that at no point did I find myself skimming extraneous words. It was that good.
Lots of action. The chemistry between Josh and Stephanie worked, and the chemistry between Jaidee and Josh worked right from the start.
Morey did a fine job writing Jaidee (the 14 year old Thai/Karen prostitute he rescues). From their random enough initial meeting, to the end of the book, their friendship developed at a nice pace. Jaidee was at once, a seasoned prostitute and an innocent victim of child trafficking.
Morey did a nice job, too, of infusing deadpan humor into his characters.
Imagine a young 14 year old taken away from her family in order to benefit one man and lessen the financial burdens of another. Imagine how this young child feels when her father hands her over to a stranger in who needs to fulfill his quota of young girls and supposedly thinks he is helping this child live a better life.
Josh Lyons owns and operates Lyons Investigations, which focuses on uncovering husbands that cheat on their wives. The lengths to which he goes to trap the target and get the goods on him will definitely surprise the reader and keep you glued to the printed page as you learn just how many cameras he puts in place, how he sneaks into the room of the husband in hotels, and just how loyal a staff he has to help him in these capers.
Caleb Hamilton works for Josh and is his tech expert watching the action from a hidden white van. But, within the confines of his domain you will find computers, monitors, wide screen televisions and the ability to see the target as he enters the Tropics Hotel and Casino. But, he does more than just observe an incident and when Rick Swanson the target enters the hotel he accidentally on purpose meets Ruth. Ruth does field work for Josh and is his secretary. She is truly cunning and gets the job done in more ways than she would like at times. Engaging him in conversation and agreeing to spend some time with him she hopes to divert his attention from going up to his room where he just might encounter someone who would care to remain unseen. Slipping Josh the target’s room key he quickly goes up in the elevator and begins planting cameras in many places within the room. But, sometimes thinks go wrong and the end result you just won’t believe as poor Caleb races out of the van and up to the room and does a great impersonation of room service and more in order to get Josh out of the jam he was in. Recording the target’s every move is his goal. The phone call made and a deal just might be struck but what Josh sees when the girl arrives will definitely changes things for not only him and one young girl. The events that follow happen quite fast as this young child enters the room is about to consent to more than any teen should but money is money and she was in the business to please a make some. So, why when Josh comes in with this own brand of cavalry does she rebel, yell, scream and kick all the way down to the station with the Vice Squad? As we listen to Josh negotiate with the target and take down the pimp we learn to what lengths he will go to in order to help a client and protect this young girl.
Al Santini is a powerful man who owns casinos, stars and controls the actions of one Lester Jackson the pimp whose top girl was sent to Rick Swanson. But, things went bad, the young girl was taken and now she marked for extinction. Al Santini does not want any lose ends and now Lester Jackson better make sure that she is taken care or his life is worth nothing. But, Josh has other plans for this young teen and with the help of some friends he hopes to keep her out of the system. But, Lester Jackson thought he would outsmart Josh and learned the hard way that was a mistake. The young girl taken and placed with him for now was not exactly what either one wanted. As Lester Jackson learns just what happens when Al Santini is not happy. Where will this take the young girl and why is she going to be more than just a target for this powerful man, Jaidee: Clint Morey you want to read this one. Young girls bought and sold in order to profit others. Brainwashed into thinking that they would have a better life. When the chance to get out comes front and center to this young Asian girl why does she rebel?
Josh has yet to learn that someone is out to kill her and that a large contract has been placed on her head. How could anyone know where she was when only a few knew? Who was the mole in Metro that tipped Jackson off? Feisty, headstrong, fearless and trusting no one this young teen uses every trick in the book to get away from Josh and back to her old life with the pimp. But, she and Josh have no idea about Lester’s fate. But, someone was after Josh and Jaidee and the chase scenes described will make your heart race and definitely endear you to this young 14 year old teen as she and Josh make their way through some serious encounters leaving him shot, the police at his house and one officer named Lydia, his friend taking the heat. Together with an ex-missionary that seems to understand Jaidee, his tech guy Adam and Ruth maybe they can save this young girl not only from herself but from the person trying to kill her. But, for some reason her trust falls with Josh and when he tries to leave her with the missionary, Stephanie, what she does will definitely surprise you and the end result will send both Josh and Jaidee on the run. Just who is behind trying to kill her and who is the mole in the police department still remains to be revealed. But, Josh is not out of the woods yet and there are some powerfully rich people that want him out of the way along with Jaidee. An explosion that takes out his office and someone close to him and sets in motion a chain of events that puts not only Josh, Jaidee and Adam in danger but others too. Loyalties are tested and a police force has someone on the take from the mob. No one is looking into child prostitution even when they are informed that it exists in their own city.
Things heat up and Jaidee seems to be bonding with Josh as lives are lost, friends are no longer there and who will avenge the deaths and help Josh prove that someone wants to silence this young teen. Then, something changes and Jaidee recognizes someone and the tables just might be turned. Just what Josh does to bring to light the issue of Prostitution is ingenious and how Jaidee helps well you have to read it for yourself. Massage parlors are all of them hiding something under the sheets? But, one rich millionaire is about to learn one hard lesson in life. Just who is after him and why you can figure that out. Will they be successful remains to be seen?
With the help of the missionary Stephanie, Jaidee and Caleb they just might bring down the top man. As the reader and these three characters go deep inside the office of this man, find out what he is really into and try to bring him down, you will not believe just how resource they are. Let’s not forget on smart and crafty 14-year-old named Jaidee who if nothing else is loyal to those that care for her and that she can trust. Family is everything to her and she will do anything to protect Josh, Caleb and Stephanie. But, Lydia leaks the truth to the police and puts herself in danger. Will she be the next casualty? Who wants her dead? Just who comes out alive you will learn when you read this book for yourself. What is Josh’s plan to bring the head man down? An ending so explosive and surprises you won’t expect as one girl named Jaidee will definitely find more than just a place in your heart. You are definitely going to want him to bring Josh, Jaidee and the team back for another Clint Morey novel. Child prostitution is an issue that is brought to light in this novel as well as corruption in the police department, loyalty, friendship and understanding. Characters that are realistic and dialogue that keeps the story line flowing at a fast paced this is definitely a five star novel.
This book is a thriller/mystery about a PI who normally exposes philandering spouses but gets caught up in the sex trade handled by the mob. Josh busts a husband found with an underage prostitute which causes him to get involved with Jaidee (a 14 year old) and soon finds them both fighting for their lives. Unfortunately, Jaidee has entertained some powerful movers and shakers and they don't want her to be able to ID them. The cops place her in a home to help her start a new life, but when Josh finds out about a hit on her life, he extracts Jaidee just in time, which brings him and his friends to the center of the bulls eye. There is a mole in the police department and Josh isn't sure who he can trust.
This was a mystery/thriller with practically non-stop action. Just when you think you can relax, something new happens. You know who the bad guy is pretty quickly as the POV alternates between Josh and his crew and the bad guys and their machinations. We don’t know who the mole in the police department is and it was a little bit of a shocker and super tension filled when they are revealed. Love that.
Morey really worked the setting, Las Vegas was a perfect place for this novel as he utilizes construction sites, rollercoasters, wind tunnels, casinos and wedding chapels. But, no Elvis impersonators were hurt during the book in case you were worried.
Jaidee is a strong character, funny, a bit misguided but loving and sweet. I am excited to see how she develops as the series continues. She and Josh have a funny back and forth dialogue and you can tell that these characters will be able to help heal the hurt that exists in both of them. Morey really hits the idea of what a family is, both in a positive and a way to manipulate. It really made me think about who I consider family, blood relative or not, and what I would do for them. This was an enjoyable and tense book filled with intrigue, politicians and the mob. Good stuff!
I have to say that I am really starting to enjoy these detective novels! Las Vegas is the perfect setting for this story. Josh is not your typical Private Eye, but after a short stint working for the Las Vegas Police Department, that's just what he is. During a pretty routine unfaithful spouse case he stumbles upon a much bigger case involving child prostitution. He ends up on the run with a 14 year old Thai/Karen prostitute.
With the help of his team and a missionary he protects Jaidee while trying to find out who wants her dead. Jaidee knows too much and they are just one step ahead of a group who will stop at nothing to make sure that she isn't able to talk to anyone. They enlist the help of Josh's best friend who works Vice, but she knows there is a mole in the department somewhere who is feeding information to the people they are after.
This story is full of suspense and it will have you on the edge of your seat right up to the end. It's pretty evident early on who is behind the prostitution, but there are no pains taken to hide that. The mole reveal is quite another story.
Josh's character is very likable. He's struggling to deal with things that have happened in his past. He's a family man who has lost his family and he is still living like they are still there. It's pretty wonderful to see how he takes care of Jaidee. He also has friends that will do anything for him. I am curious to see, if the story continues, if anything will happen between Josh and Steph.
This is a well written story with characters that are nicely developed and rich. There were a couple of spelling errors and words missing, but they didn't take away from the story at all and it's just something that you deal with when reading a self published book. I really did enjoy this story and I wouldn't hesitate to read more of Mr. Morey's work, especially if he wrote more about Josh!
Clint Morey will be joining me on my blog for day 1 of Adult Fiction Week! Look for a really great interview with Clint and my review of Jaidee! http://littlehyuts.blogspot.com/
Wow! It has been awhile since I have read a good adult fiction novel, and Clint Morey certainly has produced just that. Jaidee is a non-stop, action packed thrill ride of a book. I could easily see this novel being the basis for a movie. I have always loved suspense novels that keep you on your toes. Jaidee did not disappoint one bit. I was hooked from chapter one. Clint has a great writing style that keeps the story moving. It is clear he has a passion for what he writes. I loved Josh's character! He is not your run of the mill detective. As Clint mentioned in his interview with me, he wanted Josh to be non-traditional but also a 'family man'. He definitely succeeded. Josh is a well developed and strong main character. I liked the family aspect about him and that he sticks to what he knows is right. He has an exceptional, yet quirky crew, that really added to his story. Writing about the ugliness of the world is not an easy task. The author has given us a window into the world of child prostitution. The reader gets to experience the horrific struggle of humans trying to survive. Jaidee, despite being forced into a life of prostitution, is a sweet girl with a great deal of inner strength. She has a good heart, just like her name entails. I enjoyed her relationship with Josh and their amusing banter. The ending to Jaidee was ripe with tension and of course filled with great action scenes. Everything wraps up nicely, yet leaves you with an opening for the second book. I can't wait to see where the author takes us next. I am definitely recommending Jaidee to any reader who loves suspense and a whole lot of action!
Jaidee - Out of the Ashes is a fast-moving book with a well thought-out plot. Something happens in every chapter to keep driving the plot forward and the reader hooked. There are incidents that happen within the narrative that I didn't foresee and with other twists and turns, it's not at all predictable.
In detective novels it's very easy to see things as black and white and the characters within the stories too. Morey has chosen to use 'third person omniscient' (telling the story from different points of view) which allows areas of grey that strengthen both the narrative and the characters.
ISBN 978-1-46641270-5 For Private detective Josh Lyons, IT guru Caleb Hamilton, and Secretary Ruth and life is simple: get the evidence that the spouse is cheating. They are on a stakeout, they rescue an underage girl kidnapped from Thailand and sold into prostitution and turn her over to his friend, police officer Lydia Jones and her partner, Officer Len Martinez. When they find a contract to kill the girl, Jaidee, they steal her from the safe house. Now everybody is after them, the pimp, police and human traffickers.
Las Vegas is more than just gambling and prostitution.
a well thought out story line, reads fast and is engaging. Not my usual topics of enjoyment, based in Las Vegas where any sin goes, and child prostitution is the base of the story line. Characters have some good Samaritans and do the right thing. Good Character development and engaging character interaction. I am not sure this an author I would pursue, based on the topic descriptions of his other books. Jaidee is well done though, and lived up to the review that i read about the book.
A good read.....for awhile I was beginning to believe that this was a true story...kinda of wish it had been and that they were really able to pull off what they did in Vegas!
