I only read this one at first because it was free, but I was glad I got it ☺

It has a rather interesting plot. Kay has a form of cancer and she’s going to die soon. She moves to the countryside, and there she meets 2 gorgeous guys. Ryan and Nick, which she both falls for. Through a sequence of events, she finds out that she isn’t what she actually thinks she is, and neither is anyone around her. She takes it quite well, surprisingly.

Wow, Wow , Wow . I never been so involved with a book since Harry potter and the twilight series . The Burning Star by Jessie Lane is an action pack adventure that takes you on a journey of a life time. I fell in love with all the characters and can't wait for next book of the series to come out .The story line flowed easily from reality to fantasy which transported you right into the action with Kay. I have to admit, the biggest reason I chose to read this book is the cover. I am a cover whore and I absolutely loved the cover. I am not a fan of fantasy, but figured there was enough realness to the story I would be okay.

We jump right in getting to know Kay from the beginning, but it’s not too descriptive. Lane shows and tells us necessary information but she found the perfect balance. At first, I thought The Burning Star might fall into the cliched boy meets girl, instant love, etc…but the author broke that mold quickly.

Kay has cancer and she and her mom have just moved, again. Kay tries to hide the pain from her mother; she puts on a brave face so as not to worry her mom. Kay is not a cliched lead character. I appreciated her strength, sarcasm, and realism. I love knowing what’s going on in her head because it’s usually damn funny. She’s a self-deprecating spitfire who won’t take crap from anyone.

There’s a lot going on in Kay’s new world. She meets Ryan and Nick right away, having no idea that they are not what they seem. Once she meets them it’s as if her world goes on fast-forward. She learns about beings she’d only previously read about. Kay is being given so much information about herself and the “other” world, it’s overwhelming. She held her ground, took things in stride. I felt she handled it well, considering her foundation was knocked out from under her.

Kay carefully considers her choices. They weigh on her mind as she tries to understand the far-reaching affects her choices could have on others. She shows a great deal of maturity in how she considers Nick’s offer of protection.

Lane keeps the reader’s attention with her clever plot twists and her vivid imagery. Lane lays out the world of supernatural beings and their customs. I think this might be the best book I’ve read describing the other realms and races of supernatural beings and their ancestry. I especially loved the back-story of the wolves.

The points of view change frequently but not in a confusing way. I felt the character development was heightened by being in their head. It also allowed us to know what the enemy was up to. Kay is the lead character but we get to know Nick, Ryan, Kira and Kane as well.

In fact, I’ve become attached to Kira as well and cannot wait to know more of her story. Kira’s story is sad and one I understand well as I dealt with an abusive parent. Her strength of character was impressive. She manages to go on despite not having any kindness or love in her life.

I would suggest this book to everyone because it has a bit of everything. There’s enough male humor for the guys and just enough femininity for the girls. It’s a well written book with a solid story line. In my opinion it’s a must read. I intend to make sure I follow the series.

Her mother and her fight about whether she should be home schooled vs. starting over at a new school when she is already so physically weak from the medicines she has to take on a daily basis.

It's not until Kay runs across something unexplainable in the woods, that she decides to settle this fight once and for all and give her mom her way. It's very unlike Kay to give in to her mother's demands and her mom is surprised Kay has given up without a fight but she doesn't know the ultimate reason for the change of heart. On her stroll through the woods she came across an unexplainable event in which she ends up taking care of a very bloody and very attractive boy named Ryan. After trying to get Ryan to open up to her about what she saw in the woods, he realizes that it's possible Kay does not belong to the strictly human realm, but rather may be the long lost Fairy Princess that was abducted from the Seelie Court shortly after her birth.

Ryan isn't the only extremely handsome boy that comes into Kay's life though. While preparing for her date with Ryan, she meets Nick, a boy who will turn out to be a wolf. Not just any wolf though, a wolf that she has seen on two separate occasions watching her on the edges of her property. Caught up in her dilemma now of having two severely handsome boys pining for her, she finds that not only could she be a long lost fairy princess, but that she has a brother named Brendan, (Ryan's best friend and Prince of the Seelie Court), werewolves do indeed exist and her mother is not in fact her mother. Kay doesn't lose her sense of humor though. She believes that either she's gone to crazy town or that everyone around her has, including the woman who has claimed to be her mother all these years.

It's a wild ride for Kay on her journey to find out the truth and the reader is not let down by the speed of this story. There is adventure and drama at every bump and bend in the road. If you're a fan of faeries, werewolves and other things that you wish weren't myths, then this story is definitely worth reading. I'm definitely looking forward to reading The Frozen Star (book 2) in 2013. (less)

I started reading this one cos i liked the cover..lol..i knowbut i love the hair!

Unfortunately, I didn’t like this book. And it wasn’t just a matter of disliking the book, I ended up disliking it for so many reasons that it’s difficult for me to try and find parts of it I liked.

Firstly, and, perhaps, worst for me as a reader was the pacing of this book or even just the organising of events. The book opens and, after a few pages, the action hits. The protagonist, Kay, arrives in town. On day 1 she meets Ryan, the love interest and first supernatural guy. On day 2 she meets Nick, the love interest competition and second supernatural guy. This is the same day she finds out the supernatural is real. There then follows info dump after info dump after info dump. So much of this book consists of just huge chunks of world building being told to Kay, huge chunks of history being told to Kay, huge chunks or preview being told to Kay and generally lots of people sitting around telling Kay things. Worse, the actual world building that could be useful to know – like the relationship between the four courts, what they do, what the courts involved, what powers the fae actually have or why the werewolves and the fae hate each other, isn’t actually included at all and certainly would be more useful than musing on about the werewolves’ creation myth. In fact, considering how much of this book is info dump after info dump, we’re given amazingly little information. It’s so bad that the odd points of action that do drop in feel disjointed and out of place.

Even when we meet the secondary character, Kira and her storyline, we still have vast amounts of info dumps. In her case this involves several pages of internal monologue – this isn’t “show don’t tell” this is a character randomly decided to review her entire past life for pages on pages.

The characters are also a problem, firstly because the pacing of the story gave us no chance to learn anything about them. I know Kay has a terminal illness and is sad about this – which seems callous but this is a genre that is absolutely overflowing in angsting, tortured protagonists (especially since this book has 2 – with Kira also being an angsting tortured protagonist) it really is glutted – I think I actually have “tragedy burn out” it just isn’t interesting any more, even when the character has a very good reason for that angst. It would be better if I had something other than tragedy to try and engage with, but that’s pretty much all I know about Kay – and before we get to know her as a person we’re thrown head first into the action – well, into the info-dumping. We get to see none of the characters as characters before the story launches in – there’s no beginning to this story, just a middle – and I don’t know enough about these characters to care about their story yet.

Things I liked: The COVER is AMAZING!! LOVE It!

The story was interesting. I liked that the main character was not perfect, that she was diagnosed with cancer. This is something I haven’t seen in a YA paranormal novel before!

The characters were well developed, for the most part, and I felt like I cared for them.

What first caught my attention to The Buning Star was the cover. Love it! When the author contacted me and asked me for a review, I instantly thought, "ummm... yeah, I will!" The Cover Girl in me took over. :) Then I, of course, read the synopsis and knew I just had to read this story.

The Burning Star started off rather slow, and I felt myself speed reading a bit in the beginning... but then the second half of the book definitely picked up and had my attention throughout. I did like how the story was from so many different points of view, but at times I had to check back because I lost who was speaking.

The characters were all well developed and each unique. I really enjoyed Kira the most. She was one tough cookie!! The other supporting characters were entertaining and kept the story flowing smoothly. I thought the concept of the MC, Kay, having cancer and being ill was very creative. You don't usually see that in YA books, and I think it formed the basis of a great storyline. I did, however, have mixed feelings for Kay. I thought she was a typical teenager in certain situations, but questioned her behavior in others. For example, her instantly trusting these people she just met the day before was a little strange to me... but then later after she knew them a bit she became uncertain about whether she should trust them. It just didn't sit right with me.

Another thing I think I should mention is I felt like the author used the characters' names way too often in the dialect between them all. For instance, "Yes, Ryan, I do." "But why, Kay?" "Because, Ryan..." etc. I just felt it wasn't realistic, as people don't use each other's names in every sentence like that while having a conversation. And this was constant throughout the book. Another thing was the amount of errors in the book, both grammatical and spelling. I think maybe another edit of the book may greatly fix both of these issues and the storyline would flow more freely.

Overall, I did enjoy it. The Burning Star is a wonderful concept and has great potential. I thought the ending was the best part. It was really intense, then just stops and leaves you hanging. I plan to read The Frozen Star, book 2 in this series, to see where this story goes next.(less)

When I rate a book, the writing is always something I consider but, plot and characters are important, too, and sometimes more so. The writing in this book was, to say the least, rocky, but the story was good and the writers managed to hook me in the first chapter (which is not an easy task).

The Bad: If I were looking solely at typos and grammar mistakes, I would have given a much lower rating. As I mentioned before, the writing is important to me. This book has many grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, and (most notably) there is a problem with the dialogue. Basically, the characters use each other’s names a lot, which gets pretty weird after a while and, at times, it seems the characters are a bit immature. (Granted, eighteen year olds are not exactly mature but, in books, we like to see them that way.).

The Good: Had this book not contained so many writing errors, it may have elicited a 5 star rating from me. The premise of the story is very good, and there were quite a few original elements in it. It was a cute love story. I liked that, despite the errors, I didn’t lose track of the story, which made me want to keep reading.

Unlike other reviewers, I did not have a problem with the multiple POV. I recognized this a way to help the reader see the big picture and, although it can be tricky, I felt the writers did a good job distinguishing the character voices.

Bottom Line: I have given harsher reviews to books with fewer writing errors. The thing is, I have a huge problem with pretentiousness. There are too many writers who think they can cover up a failing story with pretty prose. This is not one of those books. It is the opposite of pretentious.

This is a debut book that was in serious need of an editor. Had there been an extra set of eyes and a little more time spent on revising, it would have been a much better book. It reminded me a little of Julie Kagawa’s “Iron Fey” series. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, but I don’t know if I’ll be as forgiving the second time around.

I have to admit, I thought that Kay’s cancer was going to be one of the main points in the story – and don’t get me wrong, it plays a pretty big role. However, that’s definitely not all there is to the book. Even if she’s really sick, Kay wants to be normal. The problem with that is that Kay definitely isn’t normal – and it’s not just about her being ill.

She wants to attend high school, go to dances and meet boys. Well, she meets boys, but it’s definitely complicated, as she finds some serious family secrets. I’m not going to explain any further so as not to give anything away – but I loved watching Kay’s story and background unfold.

I ended up loving Kay as a character, and I have to admit, I liked Ryan, too. I wasn’t so keen on Nick, but he was pretty cool. Admittedly, the love triangle in this didn’t work for me (then again; do they ever work for me?) though that might have been because I was fully behind a Kay/Ryan relationship from the get-go.

The world building was pretty good in this, and I loved the author’s version of the Faery realm – and whilst this is another book set in Faery that makes use of Shakespeare characters, it was done well, and differently from other famous series’ that have done the same, for example Julie Kagawa’s Iron Fey.

I enjoyed the writing style, but my one criticism was that there were a few spelling errors that a little more editing might have gotten rid of. However, the storyline and characters in this book more than make up for it. Generally, I enjoyed this, and would recommend it. Can’t wait for the next one – so much I need to know more about – especially Lady Kira and what happens to her!

Kay is determined to fight this cancer to the end and survive to see her 18th birthday. Who knows, maybe she can even talk her mom into sticking around here for a bit. The Burning Star was such a wonderful read. But even with the edited version I was given I still had a hard time following the dialogue between characters. It just didn’t flow together well in certain areas. I had found myself having to reread sections just to make sure I understood who was talking. And there was still a few spelling errors throughout the book.

Ok, with that aside…I loved the whole Faery story. There is just something so neat and magical about Faeries and this story was right on target with them. The authors made sure they kept to legends and even added their own little touches to the story.

There is even a story inside of the story with The Burning Star. Yes we get Kay’s POV and some from Nick and Ryan…but we also get Kira’s POV. At first you don’t think much of her part; it just seems she is summoned to track down Kay. But soon we start getting more and more of her story…and in the end it all ties together nicely while still leaving us with an enticing little clifferhanger.

I think fans of Julie Kagawa’s The Iron Fey series and Carrie Jones’ Need series will really enjoy The Burning Star. There are lots of hidden secrets throughout the book and gorgeous faeries and weres to keep the readers interest. So pick up The Burning Star today.(less)

This book grabbed my interest quickly and held on for dear life. Kay is a wonderful character who is diagnosed with cancer, and struggles to come to grips with what she really is. Ryan and Nick are two very funny characters who had me laughing out loud with their antics. There were a couple more characters that I loved, but I don't want to mention them and give out spoilers. :)

This is by far one of the best books I´ve read so far this year! It is well worth your time to read. I was kind of surprised that this book was this amazing and I was even more surprised at the content. I would never in a million years have guessed the turn outs in this one! I am really loving author duos lately! I can’t imagine writing a book with someone else - I don't always play well with others. I think it is such an accomplishment that two people can achieve such a thing.

The Burning Star follows the life of Kay, who was diagnosed with cancer and whose mom has relocated them from a busy city life to the boondocks of North Carolina. She is surrounded by boxes that she wishes would magically unpack themselves. I love this quote and, in light of my recent move, found it to be very comforting:

"However, a small voice whispered in the back of my mind
that the country might be different and soothing.
Calming in a way that my soul never knew I needed."

Deciding to take a break from unpacking, she takes an afternoon walk in the nearby woods and runs into a handsome stranger fighting a ghastly and ghoulish…monster-dog? Hell beast?? Is her imagination playing tricks on her? Are the medications she is required to take causing her to hallucinate? After the stranger denies it being anything other than a dog, she begins to wonder. Then, there are the wolves she spots outside her house, the incredible-looking satellite cable provider with a secret of his own, and the stranger from the woods who wants to see her again. Now, the girl who has never had a date in her life has two, which has Kay thinking that, maybe, moving to the country won’t be so dull after all! Secrets, glamours, mystical beings, sworn enemies, and a world she never knew existed are suddenly revealed and Kay is at the center of it all.

I always enjoy reading about the Fey. The Burning Star has a great premise and is full of magic and endearing characters. The multiple POV’s are a lot of fun, and the way it all ties together in the end was not only unique, but also very absorbing.

I did struggle a bit with conversations between a few of the characters, which didn’t always flow easily and, at times, may have been a bit juvenile for older teens. That could be my age coming into play, since, as some of you know, I haven’t been a teen for *ahem* a long time. There are some grammatical and typographical errors, but the authors are aware and are working diligently to correct those errors and make The Burning Star the best it can be. That aside, this series has so much promise!

While I adore Nick and the sacrifice he made for Kay, my favorite character soon became Kira. She was an added bonus and surprise gem. Her POV quickly became my favorite. Her story is riveting and I love how strong and determined she is. Her life is full of heartbreak and the things she has had to endure may have hardened her, but have also made her into a fierce warrior. I am anxious to see what will become of Kira and learn more about this amazing character and her possible relationship with the intriguing Kane. The Frozen Star is book two in the Star series and I look forward to reading more about these characters.

Let me start off by saying that I began reading the uncorrected version and kept with it until about 33% of the story. I was very disappointed by the many misspellings, word misuse, lack of punctuation and a whole lot of other editing problems.

So then I thought that I'd upload me the newer (proofed) version. I honestly couldn't see any difference, except that the chapters now bore the POV name. If that could be counted as improvement, okay, but it isn't such in my book.

The first book was riddled with errors, such as switching from third person to first person and a lot of spelling errors that were hard to ignore over time. Aside from one sentence and a couple of words, these errors were completely fixed. This version was much easier to read and enjoy and I’m glad I got a chance to read it!

This was a great story. It was fast paced, action packed, and full of interesting twists and turns. The book begins from Kay’s point of view, but occasionally switches to other characters. Kay, who is dealing with cancer, moves to Asheville, NC with her mom and meets Ryan, a handsome stranger, in the woods. She patches him up before her mom gets home after an encounter with a dog. The next morning, she meets Nick, a handsome satellite installer. I have to say, I’ve never once had a satellite dish installer be as nice, good looking, and compelling as Nick, but I suppose this IS fiction. =) When Ryan picks her up for a date, things take a dramatic turn. The story switches points of view from Kay, Ryan, and Nick.

Then, we meet Kira. I don’t want to give any of her story away, but it’s incredibly interesting and I enjoyed this part of the book. Kira isn’t introduced to Kay at all in the book, but I suspect there will be a introduction in the next book of the series. Kira gives her story from her point of view.

The entire premise of the book is completely original to me and it captivated me at once. I loved Kay’s character. She was charming and funny. I liked the slight competition for Kay’s attention by Nick and Ryan, who were both completely different. I liked them a lot. Kira might be my favorite character because I found her so intriguing. She was incredibly perceptive and I hope she is a major part of book 2.

This book has fairies, angels, werewolves, sickness, destiny, fate, drama, love, and mysteries. Such an incredible premise and all these elements were woven together quite well.

The reason I didn’t rate this higher is due to the writing. I thought the dialogue was incredibly weak and unnatural sometimes. It irked me how often the characters called each other by name. I didn’t expect this to change in the newly edited version and it didn’t, but it’s something I’ve thought about ever since I read this book the first time. I didn’t want to be too harsh, so I started paying attention to dialogue in other books and my own dialogue in life and I realized that we don’t typically call people by their names frequently in conversation. The characters in The Burning Star did this so much, it was ridiculous. Much of a dialogue began with “Well to be honest” or “Well, (insert name here)” and things to that effect. The writing overall felt really raw. While it’s certainly not terrible writing by any means, I think there is tons of room for improvement. If the dialogue flowed more naturally, I don’t know that I would have any complaints about the writing.

Also, while I liked that the story switched points of view, sometimes it made me stumble while reading. Certain parts didn’t seem to flow as well as others and I had to start chapters over again and really get back into the character who was narrating. Other times, this effect was kind of cool, though.

I thought the story was full of potential and it really interested me. I loved how it ended and it made me want more immediately. I will definitely read the second book. I would also recommend this book to others.

This was a really interesting & unique story, a great combination of some of my favorite paranormal characters. Definitely lots of excitement as Kay begins to realize everything around her is not as it seems, including her own life. I honestly don't know where to begin. Bad dialogue, switching from 1st person pov to 3rd person within the span of paragraph & a half, misspellings, you name it. My favorite line - "The rest of him looked slender but somewhat stocky, and I was undoubtedly appreciating the view." Spotting multiple mistakes before you make it 35% of the way into the story.. well.. this novel could've used an editor.. or I dunno .. multiple sets of eyeballs. Or SOMETHING.

If you are in the mood for a YA book that has fairies, werewolves, romance and mystery then you have to read The Burning Star by Jessie Lane. This wonderful story has a thrilling plot with many twists as well as characters that are just magical.
