Imagine, if you will, some farm animals with attitudes and musical talent. The hard-working farmer goes to bed at night. The animals would be smart too, as well, but instead, they fit in one last practice then start letting their barnyard friends into the barn for a good old fashioned rock concert. They'll pay for it the next morning, as they don't get any sleep and the farmer's ready for another day of work, but such is the life of a rock star.

Ok. I liked Punk Farm. I thought it was really funny, and very creative. I read this book with great gusto, performing the song in the book like a punk band would, like I thought the author intended it to be read. I was rocking out, screeching, making instrument sounds, just going nuts with the text, because it's about a rock and roll band called Punk Farm performing a hit song to a sold out barn! I mean, come on, you have to do a concert when you read this book, and it was *fun* to read! I got...more

Punk Farm is almost too fun for words. Almost. It would be awful to say nothing about this one. To just assume that you know about this one. Some may already love it, may already have it memorized even... but if I can introduce at least one or two people to the book--that wouldn't have known about it otherwise--I can walk away with a sense of satisfaction.

Farmer Joe may be your typical farmer. But his animals are far from the ordinary. These are animals that know how to rock and roll. Boy, these...more

When the farmer is away...the animals will play...in their rock 'n' roll band, yo! Piggy on electric guitar, Cow on the drums, rooster on the keyboard, goat on the base, and sheep on the vocals. Old McDonald in rock'ed-out version on punk farm in ol' Wisconsin.

Amusing kids' book, if far slighter than most of those I've seen in the past few years. Basically a lot of setup for a rocked-out rendition of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” (much more amusing at the book's website, punkfarm.com, than it is in print). In my estimation, the young the child, the better, on this one, and it'll require a reader who's good at acting out sounds. (Check out the recorded song for an idea of what the sound effects should sound like...more

A playful portrait of a hard-rocking animal band. The brightly painted illustrations and simple text show us a day in the life of Farmer Joe and Cow, Pig, Chicken, Sheep, and Goat. Farmer Joe works all day with no idea of the hijinks his animals get up to at night. After he goes to sleep, they put on an exciting concert in the barn. The illustrations are intensely colored and simply composed, while the performance portion of the story is a fun take on "Old MacDonald Had a Farm", but the introduc...more

The book words in Punk Farm are really easy to see and read because they are white letters on colored pages. When the animals are signing the words on the page appear bigger to emphasis that they are signing them. The color is really high intensity. Each page is filled with color. The texture of the pages is very smooth looking. The illustrations look like they were done in a paint style. The value of each page changes too. When the animals are at their rock concert the lightness of the picture...more

What a great idea for a book! Two super cool things, farm animals and punk rock music combined into one. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how much there is for kids here. Punk loving adults will enjoy the concept and the tongue in cheek illustrations, but I kept waiting for a click clack moo kind of a moment when Farmer Joe would discover the animals secret, or be a closet fan or something. Still, kind of a cute book, and the Punk Farm band's cover of Old MacDonald is available online, which could be...more

Library books - I wish I could give this 5 stars! I totally loved it, Matt loved it, and I loved that you could download an mp3 of the Punk Farm version of Old MacDonald. Charlotte gave it a big "meh." Oh well.

Funny parts for grown-ups: one of the farm animals waiting to get it's hand stamped at the door of the show is wearing a trucker hat that says "Obey" on it; the last line of the book is "Good night, Wisconsin!"

This funny book reminded me of Click, Clack, Moo. I read in preparation of seeing Jarrett Krosoczka at Dublin Literacy Conference. A seemingly normal group of farm animals come out after the farmer's light goes off in the house to form a popular punk rock band. Love the ending with the forgotten sunglasses left on the floor of the barn the next morning. Kids would love this book.

It probably helps that I know the sister of the author, but this book rocks. Also, a bunch of my friends recorded the punk version of Old McDonald for this book's promotion and website, so of course I love it. Truth be told and connections aside, I think this is a really great kids book and I'll surely get it if I ever find myself (probably by mistake) fathering a child.

My daughter (18 months) has loved this book above all others for 6 months. She begs for it. My husband and I are musicians (classical, punk, rock and metal). 4 bands practice at her house twice a week and we have a recording studio. Needless to say she knows her music and loves hearing us sing the story and enjoys the thought of animals secretly having a band.

This fun and imaginative rendition of some classic children's book themes takes me back to my emo days. At first, my 2 year old thought my version was "too loud" but the free mp3 online definitely made him ask for it "again!" And I actually don't mind, for once! A hit for the whole family.

What a blast! A very cool rock n’ roll version of Old MacDonald. The illustrations build the excitement and when the band begins to play the words and sound are amplified across the page. Yes! Wonderful read-a-loud!

You really cannot cling to your dignity when reading this out loud. Doing a punk rendition of Old McDonald is inherently hilarious, but you gotta COMMIT. Unleash your inner bovine Ramone. Maxine's favorite part is the last line: "Thank you, Wisconsin!" It's seriously fun to hear her bellow it.
Cassie
Ages 3 and up. This book is good for print awareness because it has so much dialog between the animals. There are a few questions asked throughout that can help children predict what is going to happen next. The alternate version of "Old McDonald" encourages singing, and preschoolers will enjoy the changed words.

This is a fun story about a wild bunch of farm animals who sing a raucous rendition of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." The illustrations are wild and silly and the narrative is entertaining, with lots of jazzy improvisations of the song. This would be a fun story to read aloud.

I love reading this book about farm animals in a band to the storytime crowd. Parents appreciate the humor, and the kids appreciate the silliness of the animals performing. It just gives me a sore throat (because of course I have to read it in character). Lots of fun.

This was recommended to me in spirit of my punk three year old. It's about some rocking farm animals that sing a punk version of Old McDonald Had a Farm. I read it for story time and the kids couldn't stop giggling when I yelled "thank you Boise" at the end. :)
Amanda
My 5 y/o was very excited about this one when he saw it and had me read it several times. Interesting update to Old MacDonald. I did look up the free download and then realized that I'm not a punk fan. The book was much better than the actual music.
Jennifer
Very cute book. Gives you a chance to really rock out to "Old MacDonald" and bring out the inner rock star. My daughter then proceeds to turn the ABCs into a rockin' tune because we had so much fun singing to the book. Definitely a fun read.
Caroline
Who doesn't love farm animals playing punk music? When the sounds the animals make in "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" are punk instrument sounds instead of moos and baas, preschoolers and grown-ups alike perk up their ears and rock out a little harder!
Thomas
'Can a real punk band have a keyboard player?' is a mighty serious question for another time but I can attest to the fun of Punk Farm. And it got "Twin B" to start singing E-I-E-I-O now (mixed in with 'Twinkle Twinkle' which works rather well).
Rita Crayon Huang
As with Trucks Roll!, I like to give out Punk Farm with almost no provocation whatsoever. Does your kid like to sing? Does your kid like "Old MacDonald Had A Farm?" Does your kid like animals?? Well, there you go.
Jen
Farmer Joe works hard all day and his animals do, too! They are in a band called Punk Farm and the concert they give in the book is great! The kids love to "sing" right with the animals! Great read aloud for 4K-1st grades.
Lulu
If you want to be a read- aloud hit with kids 8 and younger this is a sure bet. Nothing is better than a book written to make adults act silly. The farm animals rock out Ol' MacDonald. "Thank You, Wisconsin!"
Jenny
Along the lines of "Click Clack Moo" or "Chicken Dance," this story follows the ambitious barnyard animals as they set up and star in their very own rock concert! Features the song "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."
Margaret
4/1/13 ** Rhythm, repetition, a re-make of a fun childhood song. The farmer is puzzled about why the animals are so tired in the morning. The reader knows the truth - they have a punk band!
Kelly
An interesting take on "Old MacDonald Had a Farm." This would be a fun, interesting read-aloud with the right reader and audience. Unfortunately, I don't think I could pull this one off. ;-)
