Read in December, 2007
As I got to the last quarter of the book, I started to think, "This sounds like that old '60s TV show, 'Here Come the Brides'!" At the end of the book the author provides a historical note in which she indicates that the book is based on an incident which inspired the TV series. Told in diary form, it's the story of girls and women recruited from the mills in Lowell, Mass., by a man named Mercer to immigrate to the territory of Washington out west and work as teachers, storekeepers, ...more
