A win...a gem...a terrific discovery.

I never really got into this book (I figure I read about a third), but we had a good discussion at book club. The main character is an antihero, which I rarely like, and it's in first person POV, making it worse for me to try to be in the characters head. The setting is depressing also, a run down backwater planet that nobody likes. The plot is a mystery, dead body and dirty politics. I complained that the women that I saw (except the rookie cop) were all side players, except maybe the one who r...more
I was intrigued by the premise of a mystery set on another planet as I have an affinity for genre-blending stories. Too bad it didn't live up to my hopes. I could only stand to read through chapter 11 before putting this lump down.[return][return]The setting for the story is a totally corrupt society on a backwater planet. Very much like Simon Green's Nightside, but instead of dark and spooky, the world is sweaty and moldy. Dark and spooky = interesting. Sweaty and moldy? Just eww.[return][retur...more

There's a lot to like about this book. Especially if you're like me, and a sucker for noir integrated into other things and interesting settings.
On those two counts, this book does really well. The setting makes fabulous use of a massive space travel delay, and begins with the assumption that while future haves may have way shinier things, the have-nots may continue not-having in much the same way that they always have.

Surprisingly good, gritty sci-fi noir. Usually I'm annoyed by an overabundance of fancy technology cutting into any dark aspects this sort of genre can show, but the author handles this all deftly. It feels very Blade Runner, with fantastical technology being commonplace... but not for everyone. The world is dark and mean, and our hero barely fits the word.

I started KOP because I was led to it by an article about science fiction noir that I have, alas, forgotten. KOP is thoroughly noir, thoroughly science fiction. I was hooked immediately. Juno Mozambe is a dirty cop working for the Koba Office of Police (KOP), which he and his friend and chief, Paul, took over years ago. Koba is the primary city of the sweaty, dirty world of Lagarto.
When an army officer on leave winds up dead in an alley, Juno--a vice cop who has given up his enforcer ways--is ca...more
Kop is Warren Hammond's debut novel and I always try to support new authors when their first books appear. I bought this one at a con because it looked interesting, a little edgy and dark, even though I don't typically read SF that much.
I'm glad I did. I really liked this. As the cover suggests, it IS dark and edgy and gritty, with a ton of atmosphere and an intereting main character (who is anything but perfect) and an intriguing plot.

Nicely done noir thriller set in the future on a planet colonized by humans. The author obviously has spent considerable time thinking about the pluses and minuses of a future where humans are spread throughout the galaxy. But some things never change -- greed, corruption, the lust for power, and the drive for revenge among them -- and these basic human impulses drive the story of a crooked cop who once upon a time wanted to do the right thing. When he's once again given a choice between what's...more
An amazing book, especially for a debut novel. I rarely believe blurbs, but the reviewer who compared Hammond to Dashiell Hammett wasn't just whistling dixie - this is a pitch-perfect noir...in space. An examination of what happens when a plantation economy collapses, combined with a noir police procedural, this is one of the most creative books I've read in recent memory. The landscape is lush - literally - and it's a great representation of some of the challenges that come of colonizing a jung...more
Interesting world that was conceived for this book. I found the story to be good, plotting good and fast-paced with good diversions. Some of the subject matter probably will offend or bother a few readers, not me. I think that the premise of how a "corrupt" police force was actually created to bring order and peace to the civilian population to be a nice twist on things.

Warren Hammond has created a fascinating, fully fleshed out world in KOP. Set in the future in a once prosperous planet Lagarto, KOP could easily be set in any seedy city. Described as "Science Fiction Noir", KOp delves into Juno Mozambe, a corrupt cop. He is paired with a rarity in Lagarto, an honest partner. Without giving up much of the plot, they trail a lead that goes much deeper than both anticipated.

Kop is a well written noir novel with all the trappings of the genre. Dirty cops, crooked politicians, femme fatales and murder. What i found was that the sci fi aspect of it was very underplayed and the story could have just as easily been set in a more traditional noir environment. Still worth reading ,but I wish the SF elements had come into play more. If you enjoyed this you'd probably enjoy other examples of SF noir such as Michael Marshall Smith's Spares and Only Forward. Also KW Jeter's Noi...more
A hard-boiled, corrupt cop noir story infused with some science fiction. As a noir mystery/thriller, KOP is pretty good. As science fiction, it's not so good. While the author manages to create a believable and consistent colony world, the science fiction extends no further than that. Neither the plot, nor the ultimate resolution, rely on science or any of the common science fiction tropes or themes. Simply setting your story on an alien world and giving the characters laser pistols does not mak...more
This is a good gritty noir novel in a science fiction setting. The technology is incidental, and the backwater planet could be any steamy little third-world nation. That said, it is enjoyable for what it is. the hero is a former enforcer for the police, hopelessly mired in the endemic corruption of a poor city-state on a poor planet. He is roped into an investigation that may be beyond his tired old self, saddled with a spit-shiny by-the-book new partner, encounters what seems like random mayhem...more
This book was fantastic. I love a good crime novel and with the sci-fi mixed in it was just awesome. I loved the characters. They were well developed and Juno was a very real hero in this tale. He had flaws and didn't come off like Bruce Willis in the Die Hard movies. He got hurt,he had limits, and he felt real. I can't wait to read Warren Hammond's next book- EX-KOP. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes crime novels and don't worry about the sci-fi in it, it really doesn't hold back...more
WAAAAAY outside what I normally read. But I have to give Warren credit: he created a sometimes horrifically flawed yet totally sympathetic character. I found myself shaking my head and thinking, "Juno, please don't, you could be better" more often than "You asshole, what the hell?" during every gritty decision. That says something about the author's skill--I'm pretty morally decided, but I was put right at Juno's side and was made to care about the guy as much as his few confidants did. THANK YO...more

Pros: gritty, complex characters, intricate mystery
Cons: gritty
Juno Mozambe is a member of the Koba Office of Police, and like the chief, Paul, his former partner, and numerous other members of KOP, he's dirty. When Paul asks him to take a homicide case his trembling right hand and concerned wife remind him that his enforcer days are over. But this is an important case and Juno can't say no to Paul, even when Paul sticks him with a new partner, fresh from the academy Maggie Orzo. Something's goi...more

Kop is a police come mafia thriller set on another world far, far away. Lagarto, with a once booming economy, changed almost overnight to a stricken slum planet after the secrets of its main export, a unique brandy was stolen, replicated and produced more cheaply elsewhere. Now the only way any serious money can be made is illegal drugs, prostitution and slave trading but for those who made the long trip from earth hoping for prosperity many years ago, all that's left is Tenttown, disease and de...more
After perusing other reviews I wasn't sure how much I'd like this one, but I did my best to start it with an open mind. Despite lapping it up when I was younger, I'm not much of a fan of Sci-Fi, but I liked the idea of a Crime/Mystery with a twist so I gave it a go.
My first comment is that the most negative review I read on this page states that the main character, Juno, has no redeeming qualities and that he must be physically unimpressive as he is never described. Anyone who has read the book...more

Juno is a dirty cop. His former partner, now chief of police, formed a bond with a crime lord 25 years before the beginning of the novel. The murder that opens the novel is associated with their affairs.
The world in which Kop is set is a planet distant 20 year of travel from any other inhabited planet, this involves that the world is extremely poor and the technology is extremely obsolete. This fact make this novel not belong to both mystery and science-fiction genre as it appears reading the su...more

I recently read another first novel (I really love reading first novels of authors) which hinted at noir, but didn't quite pull it all together. I was disappointed. Kop, however, didn't disappoint, but left me eager to read the next in the series. The characters were flawed enough to be real, hopeful enough to keep the reader rooting for their ultimate success. The plot was well thought out, with enough character development to keep me interested beyond the eventual revelation of "who dun it."

Kop was an engaging and science-fiction mystery. I liked how the protagonist was flawed and complicated, because it prevented the story from being stereotypical or tedious. The author descriptively created a dark, despairing world populated with acts of bribery, violence, and poverty. This story was not extremely depressing, however, because the main character, who did many things he later regretted, did have a streak of goodness in him. A well written mystery in a well-developed futuristic sett...more
A debut novel by local Denver author Warren Hammond, KOP is a science fiction thriller. Set in the distant future, on a distant planet, the story follows Juno Mozambe, an aging crooked cop that works for the privatized police force KOP on his home planet Largato.
The novel is a perfect example of formulaic genre fiction. Juno is a washed out morally debunked cop that is both tired of his underhanded ways and entirely unwilling and unable to change them. He is partnered up with a female rookie fre...more

This is a very good effort for a first-time author. The language is explicit, and sex and violence abound. The setting is a planet far away in both time and distance from modern-day Earth. Humans on the planet live in misery, and the police force is corrupt. The story is about one of the corrupt cops. There are a few surprises that demonstrate the author's creativity and talent. Loose ends are tied up, but the stage has been set for a sequel.
Brilliant. 3rd world science fiction. There are spaceships, there are other planets, and yet there is humid desperation, truly human corruption, and an alien atmosphere that is still so familiar if you have been to Africa or Southeast Asia or Latin America. Juno stumbles onto the stage, past his prime, full of need, violent, troubled, and yet he becomes the hero. It's noire, it's science fiction, and it's brilliant.
Hammond does a good job blending hardboiled crime and science fiction. A well fleshed out protagonist and
solid world-building. I liked the contrast of the struggling planet population with the wealthy and
technologically advanced space faring tourists; reminiscent of Isaac Asimov's Spacers vs. earthbound in
his Elijah Baley novels. I will definitely continue reading this series.

Loved it. Dark, gritty, corrupt dystopian future with a cop that is "most practical" in his approach. Juno is a great character, a reflection of the dark, gritty world he inhabits. Right when I started reading this first book, I knew I was going to be all in after the set up. I just really enjoy the sci fi/futuristic detective stories and with the added darkness and corruption of the characters and their world it was clear to me this was something really awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
