A sweet fairy tale and beautiful pictures bring us to ancient Persia and its magic.
A brave knight, a king's son, falls in love with a beautiful princess. Ufortunately, theirs is a forbidden love, because she is the enemy king's daughter. The brave knight is captured and imprisoned behind a rock so big and heavy, that it can't be moved, and the princess is banished from her kingdom. But all isn't lost: the prince is rescued by his father's bravest knight, helped by the princess.
The tale has hidde...more
Anna (Gatsby's Girl)
This is the star-crossed love story of Bijan, a brave knight from Persia and Manijeh, princess of Persia's enemy. It is the story of how Manijeh saved Bijan from certain death, the kingdoms made peace and the lovers were able to spend the rest of their lives together, all because of a magic rock. I thought this was an interesting story, being that it was one that was entirely new to me. I have a mjor obsession with fairy tales and folklore, especially those from other countries (the U.S. is sort...more

The timeless essence of a folk tale that has been passed down through the centuries carries with it a powerful piece of history. This cultural tale is a window to the past. The bright and colorful illustrations bring this story alive. Though the tale may not meet what we consider modern standards in plot development, its strength is its ties to the past and Persian culture. From an educator’s viewpoint, I really appreciate how Azizi explains the symbolism in her summation at the end of the book...more

The best thing about this book is Azizi's final interpretation.

I know this is a children's book and the language and story have to be simple enough to be easily understood. But there are such beautiful and rich words, such nearly magical descriptions we all remember from the stories that populated our childhood, that children still manage to grasp! I feel like an opportunity was lost. It's such a beautiful tale, with such lovely and complex symbolism, the story felt almost clinical in the factu...more

The classic tale of Bijan and Manijeh, is mostly told through very bright and colourful pictures by Alireza Sadeghian. Being a folklore Persian story the illustrations narrating this short tale are faithful to the artistic Persian style.

Bijan and Manijeh is a short, simple and timeless classic story of the kind that were passed down from generation to generation. It speaks of bravery, love and magic in very easy terms for little people to understand.

I would recommend this book to those who like...more

I love folk tales and I love reading ones from parts of the world that typically are not published. This is a good introduction to . The illustrations are bright, clean, and detailed, but not busy. The story wanders a bit and may not hold the interest of younger children but children 6-12 years old may like it. It's a wonderful tale of love, hope, faith, loyalty and magic. At the end of the book, the author discusses the symbolism in the story and different interpretations of it. That opens up a...more
Dawn
The original version of the star crossed lovers, from Persia. This version contains many examples of symbolism to examine with middle grades. Would be great to include in a comparative unit with Romeo & Juliet and West Side Story.

The Knight, the Princess and the Magic Rock is a retelling of a classic Persian tale. I was initially excited to read it because it looked like an adventure book, and because it's Persian lore, I was sure I hadn't heard of it before. But, really? To be completely honest? I thought it was pretty lame. Basically everything is wrapped up with the power of prayer. I mean, I'm all about prayer, but in a children's book that is about a princess and a magic rock, I didn't get how prayer related. It's r...more

I like sharing stories of other cultures with our kids and this is a good one, but not necessarily a great one. The story is clear but maybe a little too factual. It's not one I'd want to read over and over. The illustrations, however, are definitely a highlight.
Patricia
Sweet Persian folk tale, well-illustrated. I especially enjoyed the story interpretation at the end which explored symbolism. Good for young children and gifted older children.
Melissa
A straightforward and prosaic retelling of an epic tale, with Persian-style illustrations. Endnote provides information about an allegorical way of reading the story.

I won this book through a goodreads giveaway. It is a very sweet tale of love and adventure. The book is beautifully illustrated. I enjoyed the story very much.

I think this lost some of its richness in translation.
