I stumbled across this book quite by accident (or maybe it was serendipity) just in time to share with my 3rd-5th graders for Earth Day. Wow! The kids were mesmerized with the idea of someone building with bottles and the fact that the story was a true one. SO many tie-ins with this title--art, recycling, Earth Day, fiction vs. non-fiction, the Great Depression. The author includes a snippet of history about Grandma Prisbey and her village along with a few photographs. One warning--the link More...

I found this book because of Julie Paschkis, the amazing illustrator of Bottle Houses. I'd seen her work in other children's books, and had to find more. Happily, she picks fabulous stories to illustrate! This is a wonderful story/biography of a real woman. And, now I want to visit Bottle Village!

Grandma Prisbrey is a self-educated folk artist who built a beautiful village out of bottles and things from the local dump in California. Gorgeous watercolor illustrations highlight this little-known, amazing story. Read this to an adult special-needs group and they loved it.

Kate absolutely adored this book. And then when she found out that Grandma Prisbrey was a REAL person, she about flipped out! Loved the illustrations and getting to see some of the photos of the real buildings, too.

This biography for young readers is based on the life of folk artist Grandma Prisbrey. If i'm ever in the part of California where she lived, i'm going to check out her amazing bottle village!

So cool! This Grandma built all these building out of bottles and other pieces of "junk." Very inspiring. Loved the pictures of the real place at the end - I want to visit!

Introduction to the folk artist Grandma Prisbey, who in the 50's and 60's became well known for building structures out of bottles and other "trash" from the local dump.

A great book to use as an example of the ultimate recycling. And it was art as well.
