The Dead of Summer (Anders Knutas #5)
“The jogger ran north along the water’s edge, the sand heavy underfoot after the night’s rain. At the promontory he turned and headed back down the beach. In the distance he saw a figure walking towards him. Suddenly the person stumbled and fell, then just lay there not moving. Feeling uneasy, he ran forward.

A typical Scandinavian crime novel. Imaginative settings on the island Gotland that lays in the Baltic sea outside of Sweden. This is a book I would recommend. Fast paced, original in its genre and with unexpected twists. I also think the translator did a good job with this one and that is very important to me. There are so many bad translations out there, honestly I almost stopped reading books in translation for this reason and that is a true shame. I think that the Scandinavian crime novels a...more
Couldn't stop reading it. So thrilling, a real page turner. I enjoyed the more feminine focus that is kind of rare in other crime novels. I'm not a hard core crime lover so this book was really something for me since it had both the thrilling crime plot as well as the relational drama. This was the first book I read by Mari Jungstedt and I will definitely read her other books.

The face that turned towards him was expressionless, the eyes cold.
For the jogger, time seemed to stand still. Deep down inside him something came alive, something he had...more
Korzysta...more

While I really enjoyed this book I wasn't quite sure who the main character was. The book really focuses on so many characters. I believe the police man Knutas was supposed to be the main player, but there were so many other more intriguing characters that he sort of got lost. I was more drawn into the story of Johan Berg the TV reporter who seemed to be one step ahead of the police and the Assistant Commissioner Jacobsson whose power is given a back seat when her boss Knutas returns from vacati...more
Of course I didn't read it in Swedish... I read it in Dutch, but couldn't find the Dutch nor the English title here. Translated from Dutch it would be something like 'in those lovely summer days'.
I like the atmosphere of the Swedish island Gotland and the reappearance of the same characters. The crime itself is another good find, but I don't really like the style of the book. It's a bit too simple for my taste. She keeps telling things about the characters that I've also read in previous books....more

Husband and father, Peter Bovide, has taken his family for their annual vacation at the Sudersand campsite in the north of Faro. He does not return from his morning run and later his bullet-riddled body is found floating in the ocean. Jungstedt's plotting is superb as she parses out the clues bit by bit. Even after you are certain you know what has happened and why, it will likely turn out that you are wrong. She's not quite as good at people. The reader is left with the feeling that the author...more
A jogger is shot whilst out jogging early one morning. Is it a random shooting or was he the intended victim? Karin Jacobsson takes the lead in this case as Knutas is on holiday with his family. Johan and Emma's separation seems permanent initially but then there seems to be a softening between them. We learn more about Jacobsson's personal life. This book has a fairly simple storyline but there is also the tale of a German family fom 25 years ago running through and it is a long time until a co...more

Hmm, I suspect I have read too many of this genre. I had it Sussed before the half way mark, but kept reading. The translation is good and the descriptions of scenery were lovely. I was a bit disappointed with the ending as I wanted to explore more why Jacobssen made the decision she did. I'm pretty sure it wasn't covered in previous novels so maybe it will be in the next one.

A Swedish police procedural based in part on the island of Gotska Sandon and featuring Anders Knutas.
Started well but became a little plodding and predictable. The dialogue and characterisation were weak even stereotypical at times. This is the first of this series I've read - won;t be reading many more in a hurry.

Considering their relatively low population, Scandinavian mystery writers always seem to entertain me with their excellent work. Mari Jungstedt is no exception with this police procedural taking place on the remote Swedish island of Gotland, and in this case, some even more remore islands. I loved it.
This is a very interesting police procedural from Sweden offering a murder inquiry with thrillerish overtones and the continuation of the saga of relationships between the major characters in this series. I give it four because I'm interested in the people. If I had read this as a stand-alone, I would only have given it three stars.

What a crappy book! I can't understand how Jungstedt can be one of the best selling mystery writers in Sweden. The story is thin, the characters one dimensional, the love story is like something taken from a teen mag and the writing is poor. The only reason I stayed put was so that I could say that yes, I did read the whole darn thing, and what a waste that was! ;)
Murder comes to a peaceful campsite, a body is discovered in the sea, the Summer is tainted and Knutas cancels his holiday to resume control of the investigation.
This is now the 5th episode of crimes on and around Gotland that are available in the UK. We meet familiar characters, their stories are advanced but the crime fails to be solved.
