With just the first paragraph the whole tone of the book is set, and it is one of curiosity: what does it all mean? The novel is a tale of ambition, intimidation and power, focusing on a local choir and its members. The beginning sees the reader thrown into the lives of the characters and the choir hierarchy – which can disturb your initial reading flow as the jumble of characters is, at first, confusing. However, once you get your bearings the characters actually become very well developed.
