An Alexander Dumas novel is always a joy to read, even when it's a minor book. Pauline is one of his early works, and it doesn't achieve the epic grandeur nor the breathtaking mastery of the Count of Monte Cristo or The Three Musketeers. It's more like a sketch of what's to come. But it's a very enjoyable read nevertheless, which brings the reader back to the over the top world of gothic romances, as they were conceived in the first half of the XIXe century. The characters are more archetypes th...more

It could be a kind of novel written by Jack Kerouac or another author of the Beat Generation ; the story deals with youth and all the human relationships that surround a such generation. Pauline is a story told according to a certain style between suspense and adventure ; the character Pauline could be the Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier too ! She met and she felt in love with two different men but the first one exhausted her hopes to be fine whereas the second one won't have really the chance to p...more

If only the book were full of lines like this and the romantic sentiment it tries to portray. Still a very good and enjoyable read, but not Dumas' best.

Recommends it for: Those who need an easy book in French to read
My first actual French book. Short and sweet. Very predictable, but entertaining. No where near the genius of Count of Monte Cristo...which I can't wait to read in French.

This note regards Alexandre Dumas, père, the father of Alexandre Dumas, fils (son). For the son, see Alexandre Dumas.

Alexandre Dumas, père (French for "father", akin to Senior in English), born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a French writer, best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him one of the most widely read French authors in the world. Many of his no...more
