Abalus lives in a bleak post-apocalyptic future, where books, apart from the Lord Master's Holy Writings, are banned. Those found with books may be executed or thrown into prison. And that causes a problem, for Abalus' father has his own secret collection - a collection that catapults their family into confrontation with the Cardinal, the shadowy, enigmatic representative of the Lord Master.
