The classic analysis of how particular political and cultural ideas come to dominate society.

The publication of For Marx and Reading Capital established Louis Althusser as one of the most controversial figures in the Western Marxist tradition, and one of the most influential renewals of Marxist thought. Collected here are Althusser’s most significant philosophical writings...more

Not reviewing the book "On Ideology" ( btw I have read it in French), just sharing with you my instant polyphonic impressional dilemma after finishing it (no voices in my head, just thoughts)
Reading Neo-marxist, post-structuralist and post-modernist essays is always a painful experience to me (I'm sure I will rarely have a private conversation with a lady on Religious and state Ideological Apparatuses, Sapiosexual women included!)..
Maybe I unconsciously inflict such complex theories to myself...more

Badiou's Pocket Pantheon turned me on to this genius human being, and he was not wrong in saying he approaches philosophy like a battlefield. He is a Marxist soldier, a Communist military strategist par excellence, and seeing him utterly defeat enemy after enemy while leaving his own front both flexible and strong enough to take assault after assault without ever being broken through entirely...it's breathtaking, truly. He even allows for human error in himself, but takes it, as any good strateg...more

Pretty dense but if you can wade through it it's worth it.

Even the already-limited selection of Althusser's works available in English have a tendency to go in and out of print, which is what makes Verso's concerted efforts through their Radical Thinkers imprint so valuable. That said, On Ideology isn't a proper book by Althusser, but rather a collection coupling a few of the more popular essays from Lenin and Philosophy with the "Reply to John Lewis" from Essays in Self-Criticism. As the latter is one of the English books currently out of print, this...more

Lääne intellektuaalil muidugi hea jahvatada, aga 1972. aastaks oleks ikka pidanud natuke arukam olema, kommunismivaimustuse asemel oleks pidanud mõistus juba koju tulnud olema.

I disagree with most of Althusser, but he tests and challenges and forces you to think in ways that I enjoy a great deal. I particularly like that the difficulty of the book comes from the ideas and his way of formulating them, and not entirely from the prose...

Louis Pierre Althusser (1918–1990) was one of the most influential Marxist philosophers of the 20th Century. As they seemed to offer a renewal of Marxist thought as well as to render Marxism philosophically respectable, the claims he advanced in the 1960s about Marxist philosophy were discussed and debated worldwide. Due to apparent reversals in his theoretical positions, to the ill-fated facts of...more
