Kiernan’s World-Fantasy Award nominated The Ammonite Violin & Others, a collection that drew comparisons to the writings of such luminaries of the macabre and surreal as Angela Carter, Thomas Ligotti, Shirley Jackson, and Harlan Ellison. Kiernan is brilliant, and this collection of stories blew me out of the water. I don't generally care for horror, and these are mostly pretty horrific, but the writing is just so fantastic that I didn't mind. Gorgeously crafted imagery, piercing insight into sexual power dynamics, and a finely-honed sense of the appeal of the grotesque - this collection is not for everyone, for sure, but it's splendid if you can stand the subject matter.

This collection of short stories will not be to everyone's taste given that it's a blend of dark fantasy and eroticism but, if you are prepared to look past the form, you will find the substance full of interesting ideas and considerable wisdom on the nature of individuality and relationships.

I feel that Caitlin R. Kiernan is right up there with the greats...Lovecraft, Poe, etc; and though I have enjoyed a couple of her novels I feel her true strength lies in short fiction. This collection is filled with bizarre and imaginative stories written in poetic prose that are both hideous and beautiful. I recommend this collection to any fan of the truly weird tale!
