Guy Gibson’s 617 Squadron was founded for one reason only – Operation Chastise – the raid on the Ruhr dams. Using Barnes Wallis’ revolutionary bouncing bomb, the hand-picked crews trained day and night over British reservoirs, perfecting the techniques required to deliver the new weapon to its target.

A nice companion to the outstanding movie from 1955 starring Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd. This is a very brief overview of Operation Chastise and the bombing of the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe dams in Germany during May 1943 as well as some information on the missions flown by this group the remainder of the war. If interested in a more detailed history of this operation, I recommend Enemy Coast Ahead. I'm looking forward to Peter Jackson's remake of the film due out in 2013.
