I think this is the worst of all 'what to expect' books. Fist of all it is very complicated and tiring. Secondly the book continuously repeats itself. Lastly and most importantly it is not applicable if you are not alien! Normally I am cruel in my ratings but I don't recommend that series to anyone especially the mom-to-bes'.
I was really hoping for a good recipe book. Not a 'diet' book that preached at me all the rights and wrongs of eating when you're pregnant.
I know the basic foods to avoid, I know the foods I should eat, I know roughly how much weight I need to gain and how to do it. All I want is some ideas of how to prepare the good, healthy foods, I don't need all the information this book flings at me. I can get most of that from a regular pregnancy book.

This book contains some great recipes. However, it is difficult to think about eating a healthy, balanced diet when you are crossing your fingers that today is the day your nausea dissipates! But, I did like how the amount of food you should consume is put in perspective. In one part Murkoff mentions that even though you are "eating for two", it is more equivalent to an extra bowl of oatmeal or two glasses of skim milk.
I almost laughed when I read all the stuff they expect you to eat in one day. I eat incredibly healthy, and even I was overwhelmed. The information is not presented in the most accessible way - don't waste your time with this one, get Feed the Belly instead.
What a horrendous book. For all the hype this book gets it is pure garbage. It does not provide any real information and makes pregnancy sound as if it's a day at the spa (which it most definitely is not!).
I would not recommend this book in way to anyone. A complete waste of money!
PS The author has no medical background or training whatsoever.

Expecting and Trying to Conceive Mothers
This is my favorite of all the "What to Expect" books. It informs you on good nutrition during your pregnancy. It also provides lots of easy tips and recipes on how to get the most nutritional foods. It also has recommendations on the things to eat while trying to conceive. I followed the recommendations of this book pretty closely, and I've had a very healthy pregnancy, gaining only the "minimum" acceptable weight, with no nutritional deficiencies, no problems with Gesta...more
This book was recommended by my doctor. Go ahead read it. Then for a laugh write down what you would need to eat for a day to fit their plan. You will need to eat constantly to fit everything in. Completely unrealistic.
I got this book sent to me free by my insurance company and I wasn't that excited to read it. But I did and I learned a lot of interesting stuff and modified some aspects of my diet to include it.
This book encourages you to get your "daily dozen" of fruit and vegetable servings. I am still working on "striving for five," but at least now I have legitimate reason for my goals.
What to Expect When You're Expecting already covers a lot of the topics discussed in this book. Eating Well goes into greater detail and includes recipes.
Most of the information in this book is in the main book and therefore there was a lot of redundancy in this book. I also think it was very difficult to decipher what to eat in a day, it would be nice if they included sample weekly meal plans and incorporated their recipes into it. A problem with the receipes - way too time consuming and a lot of the vegetables/foods they recommend are not readily available year round. This was not a great book.
I read this shortly after I found out I was pregnant- and was still very optimistic about the whole pregnancy and being healthy thing. I absolutely LOVED it... for about a week. In short, I really didn't find this book to be helpful due to the fact that I just simply couldn't eat anything without throwing it up, let alone try to eat healthy. The past three months of my diet have consisted of pretty much everything that wasn't recommended in this book. Maybe when the clouds lift i will revisit th...more
I think this book makes women too panicky on what they can and can't eat. I haven't tried any of the recipes in it yet though.
This book has been very helpful...even though I have read the whole book I still go back to it and reference it!
The main trouble with this edition of this book is the strictness of the diet they expect pregnant women to follow. Having a bagel for a "once a week" treat is not remotely realistic, especially at a time when many women have food aversions and cravings. There is some solid information in this book, but it is overshadowed by the guilt-inducing diet.
I did try a couple of the recipes; one was okay, the other was an unmitigated disaster.

A little outdated, but decent info. A good place for me to start. Super boring though.
Didn't really use this book much. The recipes weren't incredibly useful either.
I think I read the first edition, but it's very unrealistic.
EVILLLLLLL!!!!!!! Eat a cupcake and close the book.
Just get the regular WTE book - this one does not cover much more on eating unless you want recipes...
Great book! A good guide on healthy eating regardless if you are pregnant or not.
This book is...annoying. It's written like a magazine article with that sort of sarcasm and wit. That said, the information in this book is invaluable. Very helpful.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend reading this book straight through, but it has some good recipes in it and I like to have it as reference. I think the other reviews were harsh- don't you want to at least try to eat your very best while you're pregnant?
This book had some great information in it that has influenced my diet for the better during my pregnancy. However, the diet recommended in the book is WAY to strict. It's pretty much deemed as evil if you touch your lips to any refined grains or processed sugar. Some of the recipes are pretty good. Not a book to read if you don't want to feel guilty about having a doughnut or ice cream every once in a while during pregnancy.
This book has the least turned back pages or spine crease on my pregnancy bookshelf. It is, I hate to admit, a worthless read if you have completed "What to Expect..." by the same authors. The recipes are generic (but easy enough for your partner to manage) and have few veggie options. Save your money and check this one out at the library.
Good book with great advice about healthy eating during pregnancy. Each time I picked it up again to glance at the tips, nutrition advice, food categories or recipes, it inspired me to keep eating right (or get back to eating right) and how important it is for both me and the baby. Good resource and has some good recipes to try.
I haven't been able to enjoy this book. I've only been able to think about food for about a week. I've dabbled with a couple recipes from memory (and one from an experiment) but I'm still having trouble reading recipes.
It seemed good and down to Earth when I was feeling well enough to glance at it. :)

Neurotic first time pregnant women...or not.
This book was way too strict. I intended to eat well during pregnancy, but the fact is, you get sick, stuff happens...you do what you can. In an ideal world teh book might be helpful, but in actuality I think it is more likely to make pregnant women feel guilty for not being perfect.
Good advice and some great recipes. Now if only I wasn't too nauseous to try them.
If you can follow this book then you are a better person than I. I believe that pregnancy is the time to eat like a cow since you look like one any way. And that my friends is the philosophy that has caused me to need to lose all this weight!
