In Indian Home Cooking, Suvir Saran introduced our taste buds, and our kitchens, to the wonders of cumin, coriander, cardamom, and curry leaves. Book, where have you been all my life? This is my theory of cooking, down pat. (obviously it is clear where my culinary philosophy lies) Saran has a perfect dual-notion of cooking that suits any ABCD, hapa, or other. Directions look to be a snap. I can't wait to cook up a storm and renew this from the library. Someone get this for me for any holiday you choose. This is also great food inspiration - I was watching an HGTV show where the dude was saying he goes to pretty hotels and restaura...more

I loved the idea of this cookbook, though I was expecting something a little more Indian than it turned out to be. Quite a few recipes, most notably the one for Macaroni and Cheese, take a very broad understanding of "masala" --the only thing an Indian would recognize are the peppercorns. There are a few which appear a bit like dishes my mother in law has made or I've tried at Indian restaurants and I've found them helpful in getting the proportions right (Indian Eggplant Caponata and ...more

Indian fusion cooking. so many of the recipes look good that it is futile to try to copy down every one I want to try before I return this book to the library. If I don't get this for Christmas, as requested, I will break down and buy it myself.

This is a new book in my cooking collection, and I have not explored it completely yet. Recipes that have been excellent include pistachio/cardamom pound cake with lemon icing, lemon chicken, creamy cauliflower and spinach soup. All excellent.

A great book for anyone who likes Indian food. Once you learn some basics, pick this one up. It plays with Indian flavors in recipes designed for the American kitchen.

Not bad, not great. Kind of Indian food lite. Borrow it from the library like I did and copy the couple of recipes that look good.

American Masala isn't about traditional Indian food-it's about adding new flavors to the great American melting pot, using spices to liven up the old standbys, and enjoying dishes that are as exciting and diverse as life in the big city, and yet as familiar and comforting as your mother's cooking."
