This helped me out when i did pokemon pearl
I learned how to beat Pokemon Pearl. No, really I don't like these types of game guides but Pokemon is deliberately obtuse. I bought this to clear up some gameplay mechanics I still haven't pinned down since owning Pokemon Blue all those years ago. After seeing some of the stuff that you can do in the game I have to say that it's nigh impossible to beat without someone telling you about the secret things to begin with.
I'm still reading it on a need-to-know basis.

Its a game guide. And it was invaluable in helping me play the game and beat the Elite 4. Now I am in uncharted terratory, AND William took his book back!
